I live in Germany. I am 57 now and I still get shivers down my spine when I hear this song. My father sang it for me as a lullaby when I was a little boy. Thank you for sharing.
Lots of Love from Bavaria
Bravo Joan Baez Friedel Breitenbach
Its getting medievial here. Nice. As an Austrian from Vienna who has heard this song from the day he was born on this is some kind of flashback. Here this is THE childrens/babys lullaby. There is an english text version too. The moon has been arising, the stars in golden guising adorn the heavens bright. The woods stand still in shadows, and from the meads and meadows lift whitish mists into the night. The world in stillness clouded and soft in twilight shrouded, so peaceful and so fair. Just like a chamber waiting, where you can rest abating the daytime's mis'ry and despair. Behold the moon - and wonder why half of her stands yonder, yet she is round and fair. We are the ones who're fooling 'cause we are ridiculing as our minds are unaware. We vain and wretched sinners presume to be the winners, but we know nothing yet. So many neat solutions are nought but great delusions that farther off the path us get. God, grant us Thy salvation! No worldly aspiration, no vanity allow! Like children simple-hearted, and joyful like we started, let us become and teach us how! And lastly, grant us leaving the world without much grieving, let peaceful be our death. When from the earth You take us, let heaven's joy await us stand by us, Lord, at our last breath. So, brothers, in His keeping prepare yourself for sleeping; cold is the evening breeze. Spare us, Oh Lord, Your ire, let rest us by the fire, and grant our ailing neighbour peace
Vielen herzlichen Dank!
I am a young student of music pedagogy from Switzerland. I've recently decided to sing this song with some of my pupils. I guess I don't want it to get lost ... It's not only sung in Germany but also very popular in Switzerland. My mother used to sing it as a lullaby when I was a child. I still feel waves of warmth and comfort when I hear this beautiful song, makes me nostalgic. Many thanks for the nice and "folky" arrangement.
Danke liebe Joan Baez! This song bring's comfort and hope in this time. Greetings from Germany/Halle and all the best to everyone in the world. Thanks!
I love hearing you sing in languages that are not your first. A great act of giving to those who speak different languages than English but have the same human needs to be comforted in this time. What an artist....what a class act!
Dear Joan, I`m hearing your music for more than 50 years and you`re still wonderful. Thank you very much for this song. Best wishes from the north of Germany. Stay healthy ! Gerd
If I could wish another german song, it would be "Die Gedanken sind frei" ( "The thoughts are free. Who is able to guess them? They fly by like noctunal shadows..." etc..) It is an old song from the 19th century. Music and lyrics are both from unknown persons. Joan, you are still our fighting heroe and ever will be!
This song is rooted deeply in the soul of german culture. It will always stir me, always remind me of my childhood, always push aside the stress and hustle of everyday life. Your performance of the song is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Thank you!
Alles Gute weiterhin Joan Baez.
Dear Joan, never expected some such song from you, what a surprise! You are for me, as you've always been, the real, also multilingual, Sovereign Queen of Folk Music. Thank you so much for your never ending contributions of such little jewels to the treasure of world music 👍
Thank you Joan for these many musical shares during this time. Many blessings to everyone. "May every being ailing with disease Be freed at once from every malady. May all the sickness that afflicts the living Be instantly and permanently healed."
Thank you so much for this beautyful song, I love it. My mother sang it to me and I felt shelter and love. Now I sing it to my little granddaughter and I feel inside my heart all the beauty and love of my childhood in Berlin. Your songs always comfort me and gave me hope and freedom.
Dear Joan, you are my hero. Your activities impressed me so. I hear your songs since 1976. Thank you for your Gute Nacht-Lied. I wish to hear from you from time to time. But at first, please stay safe. Lovely greetings, Astrid Miederer-Madani
My mum used to sing this for me when I was a child. As Joan sang this to her audience as one of the last Songs of her concert a few years back in Schwetzingen, I hardly could hold my tears. It's still very emotional when I listen to her now😪😪😪😪😪
Lovely rendition of this traditional song...first saw you at the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin almost 40 years ago...and then again in an outdoor concert again in Berlin...then many years later in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (of all places). Thanks for singing beautifully in English but also German, French, Spanish...the act supports the pan-national power of song... and you are such an ambassador.
So schön, Zuversicht Vertrauen in Gott.
Oh Joan, how beautiful!! 😍 It seems incredible to me: I just can't emotionally get myself to writing or even singing songs in my own native tongue German. Instead, I use English and my mother's native tongue Portuguese. Now you come up with "Der Mond Ist Aufgegangen", and carried by your voice the words of my own native tongue all of a sudden manage to break my heart... Thanks, Joan! Love from Cologne Kai
"Du sollst an Deutschlands Zukunft glauben An deines Volkes Aufersteh'n - Laß diesen Glauben dir nicht rauben - Trotz allem - allem was gescheh'n - Und handeln sollst du so als hinge - Von dir und deinem Tun allein - Das Schicksal ab - der deutschen Dinge - Und die Verantwortung wär dein" ! Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762 - 1814)
Sorry Frank, it is gift for everyone, who speaks or likes the german language and who loves this poem from Matthias Claudius and the music from Franz Schubert.... it is a gift for the whole world, not only for germans. :-)
I adore ❤️😍 you Miss Joan. We've been through so much together over these many years , you feel like family. Thank you for coming to us . You are quite Dear!
Many thanks -> Vielen Dank You are true hero -> DU bist eine wahre Heldin 👏👏👍👍👍 Best wishes for you and your family from Germany - > Alles Gute für Dich und Deine Familie aus Deutschland ❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much, Mrs. Baez, for this "Abendlied" from Matthias Claudius. It is good to see and hear you again. I like to think back to this beautiful evening at the ancient theatre of Ephesus ( I think 1989) with your special guest Zülfü Livaneli. Stay healthy and mindful, aloha and all the best to you.♥♥
Thank you so much for this song. I am from southwest of Germany. Very close to French and Swiss boarder which are closed now. It's a hart time. But we will get over it and rise again. I attended two of your concerts in our area, one at Basle/Switzerland in the 1990th with my best friend (who lost her mother on Easter monday due to covid19) and at Freiburg/ Germany , I think two years ago. Joan, thank you so much for your music and support.
Thank you from Germany for that song! It happened, that I found this Video early in the morning, but it gave me peace and made me relaxed at once. So it's about some things ("manche Sachen"), that are always true, in the morning and in the evening .Vielen Dank!!!
so good to see you and singing for us this Beautiful Germany song wirh its deeper message you walked, sang me thru my teens and twenties and thirties now I see we getting old and sweet sour taste of memories flash back Stay healthy and happy
Thanks a lot from a Berliner having lived in Paris for a long time now. Chanson pour l'auvergnat et Der Mond ist aufgegangen are exactly the two songs I would have chosen. Very comforting... Much love to you
Through the Civil Rights moment, to opposition to the Viet Nam War, to giving music to us now, during this pandemic, you have always been there for the American people. Thank you. I love the finger picks, I use them when I play the banjo and dobro, but I will have to try them with the guitar.
JOAN BAEZ - For me she is the FIRST LADY in fighting for human rights just by singing. What a beautiful, honest Lady! I think, that she belongs to the best part of the US! I am happy that she is still there to remind us that there is a wonderful America beyond Donald Drumpf... I never expected, that she would sing my most favorite german folksong in German. The poem of this song had been written in Darmstadt, the city where I am living now, by the German poet Matthias Claudius. Thank you Joan! You are wonderful! love you! You are moving me to tears! THIS IS HONEST SINGING!
First of all, I never heard this (ancient) song before. Now I'm obsessed with it. Second, Joan LOOKS and sounds amazing. I love how her vocal has mellowed. I wish she would record this.
