Joan Baez sings 'Mary Hamilton' from her self-titled 1960 Vanguard album. This song, perhaps the most popular folk ballad (Child #173), originated in Scotland in the 1500s. Mary Hamilton, an attendant to the Queen, is to be executed for casting her baby by the King of Scots out to sea. Its possible historical antecedents are not clear, but Baez' version places it in Glasgow with the king called the "highest Stuart of all". Though finding images for the people, places, and actions of such a song is problematic, the emotion of the woman's narrative on her impending doom and the quiet, but intense, feeling of Baez' singing likely overcome any failings. The song is also known as 'The Four Marys' and has been recorded by Peggy Seeger, Robin Roberts, and others.

Fantastic song/performance. Joan Baez amazing voice ... this is almost as good as the vs I knew 50 years ago as a child on an old 78rpm disc which was just unaccompanied voice. Would love to find out who by ... but that old record is long gone now. Have to say however - that some of the visuals are well naff and don't suit this dark and beautiful song. But then that's just my opinion. Thanks for uploading.

@thetrevorosborne

@@johnshea4436 I agree but others have mentioned that there was a direct link between the 2 songs...... Wikipedia "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" is a topical song written by the American musician Bob Dylan. Recorded on October 23, 1963, the song was released on Dylan's 1964 album The Times They Are a-Changin' and gives a generally factual account of the killing of a 51-year-old African-American barmaid, Hattie Carroll (March 3, 1911 - February 9, 1963), by then 24-year-old William Devereux "Billy" Zantzinger (February 7, 1939 - January 3, 2009), a young man from a wealthy white tobacco farming family in Charles County, Maryland, and of his subsequent sentence to six months in a county jail, after being convicted of assault. The melody is largely taken from a folk song called ”Mary Hamilton”. The lyrics are a commentary on 1960s racism. When Carroll was killed in 1963, Charles County was still strictly segregated by race in public facilities such as restaurants, churches, theaters, doctor's offices, buses and the county fair. The schools of Charles County were not integrated until 1967. Show less...
@johnshea4436
@johnshea4436 Год назад
@@thetrevorosborne That is true, Wikipedia does mention this. I think Wikipedia is wrong in this case. There is a whole wikipedia page about songs that Bob Dylan supposedly based on other songs. Some of them are correct (e.g. Bob Dylan's "Song For Woody" is almost identical musically to Woody Guthrie's "1913 Incident", with new words); some of them are specious, in my opinion.
@thetrevorosborne
@thetrevorosborne Год назад
@@johnshea4436 I think the early songs melody wise fall into 2 categories 1 songs which are straight copies of a older melody (eg masters of war , with God on our Side etc ) then there are songs while obviously influenced by older sources are more creative adaptations examples being Hard Rain /Blowin In The Wind /Girl From The North Country. I think by Blonde on Blonde Dylan composing abilities had developed to the point where older sources were no longer relied on so much

@@jimmymacGoa Been one of my favourite songs for 70 years and this is the very best version I've ever heard. The facts confirm your statement: though: Fact 1 - Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded in 1587, but had four Marys - Fact 2 - Mary Hamilton was potted by a King and after being convicted of drowning the kid, was beheaded 1719 - If she was indeed one of the four Mary's, she would have been around 150yo then, probably a wee bit old to be having a kid. You can't let facts get in the way of a great story
