Almost like a foreign language. I watched all the old black and white movies and sometimes when they spoke I would have to rewind and listen again. It’s a real shame how the English language has deteriorated.
Just because she has never surpassed the 5th grade doesn’t mean she still had a 5th grade education she’s clearly self taught! You people are so indoctrinated by this BS American education system!
No matter what people believe about her personal life, one thing should never be forgotten ... Joan Crawford was an immensely talented actress. Sadly this often gets overlooked.
@@dawnvalentine74 Joan Crawford's twin daughters, Cathy and Cindy have said that she was a decent person and that Christina told nothing but lies about their mother.
It seemed pretty obvious to me that Christina was angry about being left out of her will so she wrote a lot of lies about her to make money. It’s a shame that she got all that attention.
You know, when _Mommie Dearest_ first came out, I believed it and thought Ms. Crawford was a tyrant. (In my defense, I was only 12 years old.) The older I've gotten, the more I've read, heard and observed; I now think that Christina was full of 🐂💩. I think it was a pathetic and petulant attempt for attention and fast money. I believe that Ms. Crawford was probably a stern and firm but loving mother. I believe Christina and Christopher were just butt-hurt over being financially omitted from Ms. Crawford's Will.
I truly love watching Joan during the build up to the actual interview. So poised and yet ready for another cigarette. I find her very presence just fascinating. Lord, I wish this was in color! Thanks, Bryan, this is a goodie!
There is not one single female celebrity in films today that can rival Crawford. She was among a constellation of stars not matched in an industry now stocked with adolescent wannabes.
This was absolutely riveting. I could not look away. She was so fascinating. She was honest and thoughtful, but she projected exactly what she should - grace, poise, intelligence, femininity, experience and beauty. Perfect interview.
Absolutely incredible how her formal education ended after the 5th grade. She certainly pulled herself up and became one of Hollywood’s greatest stars.
I love her speaking voice. She certainly was poised and classy, but she also had a surprisingly down to earth neighborliness with people that was so charming.
The epitomy of sophistication, style and CLASS...Joan Crawford. Joan said it best. "The world today is so ANGRY". This was in the 60s. Imagine what she would say about the world today. I would just love to hear her opinion.
Really interesting interview, she actually listened and understood the questions. So poised and actually answered with mature responses. Great actress! Quite enjoyable
Back in the day where movie stars and performers didn’t need publicists.. they had class and knew how to present themselves. But on the other hand the media back in the day weren’t so desperate for drama to make a story that they would twist things…. It was a totally different time! I honestly think I was born in the wrong era.
Her daughter, Christina, does not have an ounce of Joan’s class nor sophistication…. Clearly from a very different gene pool. One cannot teach class to poor students.
What a PRO - I could and do watch this over and over. Watching and listening to Joan answer every question with such poise and an understanding of how she's being viewed, the expectations of her status and experience, you really can learn a lot about how to listen and respond to any sort of interview or interaction with people in day to day life.
She's so regal in her own way, and she has an extraordinary voice and such a gorgeous smile. The sound of her voice is tranquil and deeply feminine. And she's so very articulate and elegant. What a superb actress. Wow.
Joan’s eyes give her away. She holds on to her dignity so tightly and is vulnerable to an implied insult. Before the interviewer starts asking questions you can see the fear in her eyes. She seemed to fear the unknown, she wasn’t sure what was going to be asked, how she would come off. Once she hears that he sat through repeated showings of one of her moves ,she knew he was a fan, that she was in a safe space. The woman Christina her adopted daughter describes is not found here, not a trace. She has such dignity. A true legend. I agree with her the world needs Romance when they go to the movies.
Some of the questions, in spite of, being terrible, ALL her answers were GREAT! One of my favorite actress! I am always mesmerized by her movies no matter how many times I seen them. She can never be forgotten! Thank You for downloading. I enjoy very much!
I will always adore Joan Crawford. This is a lovely interview. The camera catches everything. She is poised and beautiful, and there is a sadness that comes through at times.
I thought so as well. I cantget over just how well she adapts. I am blown away especially after hearing her highest level of education was 5th grade. She radiats class
I dont think she lied at all. I think she was open, honest, thoughtful and said exactly how she feels. I think she had a full life and worked hard. A true inspiration. Yes, an inspiration
She was such a beautiful, poised and well spoken woman. Hollywood in appearance was so classy. Behind the scenes it was frought with affairs, booze and deals made on the couch. I would have been happy if Hollywood could have remained as it was and not the ugly tawdry, mostly untalented and fly by night mess it has morphed into. There is no comparison! Those were the good old days for certain.
@@direfranchement only a 5th grade **formal** education. She studied on her own, and with tutors also, and she continued educating herself for the rest of her life. She had a voracious need to understand and be informed of things because she had such a shoddy fundamental education.
At around 6:50 - 7:00 Joan says "I was born a woman and I think we're here to stay I'd like to be a part of that group" where her country drawl comes out, I so love that ☺️😀
Actresses of today should watch this and take a class from Ms.Crawford. They don’t make them like her anymore. She was the epitome of Hollywood class. Very admirable how she lived in the NOW and never thinks back of the past. A lot of us wish we could do that. She is an inspiration. What a class act. You can tell she took every single role she played, seriously. I loved how she spoke of rehersing “too much” as if one might lose that initial realness of the reactions on film. What an absolute perfections she was, and you clearly can see and feel that in her films. Her poise and praise for the newest starlets was inspiring and ones of today should take note before they “shade” their fellow peers. Her honestly is so appreciated. Not to mention her eyeliner was perfection! Thank you for sharing this fascinating interview.
Funny to read your comment. I just spent the last few days watching many of her films. Such a great actress right through the decades, and a great beauty.
In a time prior to boxtox and lip injections on every instagram influencer, let alone celebrity, Joan truly was such a beautiful older woman. She didn’t even need excessive make-up or cosmetics to still have that innate grace about her.
People keep writing this is a great quote:“You manufacture toys, you don’t manufacture stars.” That's exactly what the studio system did during her day. They manufactured stars. She's a perfect example of the studio system. Even the way she speaks was something she learned in the studio system. It's the mid-Atlantic accent. Not used by Hollywood anymore. She actually aged well and looked better as an older woman.
Pear-shaped vowels. That's what my (to me) elderly 5th grade teacher tried to teach us in the early 1970s. Fascinating way of speaking, my mother spoke this way at formal events. And I'm from Washington State!
I understand EXACTLY & PRECISELY what she means when she's caught herself doing or playing something that's "herself" and NOT totally in service to the character. An audience might not notice it, A Director might not even catch it, but the Actor ALWAYS does. I like how she intellectualized and contextualized that. And people might give me some crap for this, so I digress: she and Bette Davis were perfect "bookends" to each other during their competitive days in Hollywood. They actually complemented each other BECAUSE of their differences and juxtapositions. I always felt they understood and (if not respected) at least tolerated each other. In Baby Jane I always felt that undercurrent of actual respect that the two actresses had for each other because they each recognized their shared struggle in Hollywood.
Thanks to my Grandmother, I used to watch all of the old Joan Crawford and Bette Davis movies when I was a kid. My Grandmother has been gone for a long time now but I still enjoy the old black and white movies. That is when Hollywood was great and people had a true love for acting.
Never saw Joan Crawford interviewed. She seemed pleasant enough, smart and likable. Much of what her adoptive daughter wrote about her in Mommy Dearest has been refuted by two of the siblings and people who personally knew Joan Crawford.
I was really surprised at how she has such a gentle spirit. Smiling, looking you straight in your eyes, polite, saying thank you…amazingly talented. I guess I watched so many of her scary movies I really didn’t know how sweet she could be. I was very touched with her softness as a woman, while being so successful. She could be very tough when she needed to be.
Well- she mentions only having a fifth grade education, and having to look up words from her scripts in the dictionary. I’d say that more impressive than her literacy skills is her grit, because the truth is she was much less educated than the average person of today, but she did not see this as a barrier that couldn’t be overcome. It’s honestly inspiring.
@@soccermommyNPC I understood she only had a fifth grade education, which makes my point. The average person graduating from many U.S. High Schools today would not be able to compete with the literacy of a fifth grader of that generation. I guess we have different definitions of the concept of basic "education." My definition is reading, writing and verbal articulatenes. The ability to effectively communicate.
I read "Mommie Dearest" without really knowing anything at all about Joan. After watching her films and watching interviews, I believe very little of what Cristina accuses her of.
i think sarandon would be perfect to play crawford if a film biopic were to be made about her later years…sarandon has the facial likeness and deeper voice
Joan knew how to give an interview. The class and elegance is long gone. I wish the trash now days would learn from this lady on what it takes to become a legend
I could watch the beginning over and over and over. She had so much presence. She had the perfect facial structure and knew how to work the camera. Golly, She's missed. RIP beautiful JC
We only think she was a terrible mother because of Christina’s book and the nasty movie. The truth is she had twin daughters also…. And they were very close to her and treated her with respect. Joan left her fortune to them because they always showed her love and respect, as a mother deserves. The twin daughters swear she was a delightful and kind mother. And swear Christina was a liar.
Joan Crawford made some fantastic movies, they really do not make them like this anymore, can watch and enjoy time and time again. Films made today lack so much of everything that made these movies so memorable.
Joan Crawford was such an amazing actress and my favorite movie is Mildred Pierce. I have watched this movie countless times ( maybe 30 ) and it still never gets old as the acting and story line are so good. If you have never seen it, take a look !
I love that: "I won't stop, I'll just remember." Her brain never stops and clearly remembers every detail of life. What a Queen, we were lucky to have her
JOAN CRAWFORD MADE SOME VERY GREAT MOVIES , BUT THIS INTERVIEWER IS ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR - HE'S A STAR IN HIS OWN RIGHT ! EVERY STAR SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE THIS , HE'S SO KNOWLEDGEABLE OF HER WORK , AND HER WORK WAS/IS SO IMPRESSIVE !
I love this woman and I really admire her comments on Liz. She showed true humility, grace, modesty, and appreciation for true talent, even if Liz was younger and possessed a world-renowned beauty. Definitely doesn’t fit the narrative that has been created for her as time passed!
