These BKR videos are very refreshing for a film buff like me. I long ago grew fed up with either extreme: the sensationalist scandal-ridden exposes, and the sentimental glorification of old Hollywood. Instead, these videos take a detailed, mature and measured look while still showing affection for the subject. They're not forever pitting actress against actress, or actor against studio. It's a humane, even-handed, cliche-free and grown up look at a complex business and contextualised against the wider backdrop of the times. Love it.

I was named after Katharine Hepburn, but my parents forgot the ‘A’ in her name after a difficult labor and delivery, and a nurse put an ‘E’ in my name and birth certificate. My sister was named after Brooke Shields. I HATED my name growing up, always wanting to be a ‘Christina’ or ‘Jennifer’- by my, oh my, I’m so grateful my parents named me Katherine. Thanks Momma & Pop! I wouldn’t trade it for ANYTHING in the world. If anyone sees this, do you know or run into many women named Katherine? I’d love to know! Thanks dolls! ✨✨✨🌹🌹🌹

I think part of the reason Joan is still talked about today is her ability to transform and change with the times. I’m sure many women who were around her age would have felt that she was a kindred spirit. She was a flapper, a Depression-era worker and a housewife with big aspirations. And I don’t think she was one to rest on her laurels. Say what you want about her, she put in the work, showed up prepared. And the fact that she was brilliantly talented and uniquely beautiful didn’t hurt either.
@TheSongwritingCat
@TheSongwritingCat 4 года назад
One of my favorite actresses of all time. Her flapper/Pre-Code movies, Grand Hotel, the Clark Gable romances, the tough working class strivers, the glamour goddess, The Women, Mildred Pierce, What Ever Happened To Baby Jane... I feel sorry for people who think she's a bad actress and discount her career because of Mommie Dearest. She had great range and fought to stay relevant.
@animalfriend6413
@animalfriend6413 3 года назад
@@TheSongwritingCat I don't understand that somebody who watched some of her movies would call her a bad actress. Imo the problem is that so many people can't make a difference between the actress and the private person. Does she look good as an abusive mother? - NO. Was she a good and beautiful actress? - YES. The one doesn't need to exclude the other because it's seldom black and white when it comes to real life and real people.

Not really just rumors if it’s a firsthand account from her own child. It probably has validity. But everyone is human and deserves to be looked at from a multi-faceted perspective. We tend to make heroes or monsters out of people, and it reduces them to caricatures instead of living, breathing human beings. She wasn’t just a glamorous movie star and she wasn’t just some abusive monstrous person. There were many parts to her, just like with anyone.

I think a more recent example of what happened to Joan Crawford was Sandra Bullock's win for The Blind Side. I see parallels between their careers. Like Crawford, Bullock in 2010 had been an audience favorite for 20 years whose roles/performances really appealed to contemporary women. When she was nominated it seemed weird that that was her first nomination and brought to attention how un appreciated she had been.

I agree, charmingdresden. Davis' gave a marvelous performance but she was never the favorite to win that night. As great a film as it is, Baby Jane was still technically a B- horror film, and Academy VERY rarely gave out Oscars at that time for those types of films. Quite the opposite, The Miracle Worker had everything Oscar loved- challenging material but an uplifting true story, with stage pedigree. I would think it was between Anne Bancroft and Geraldine Page, honestly.
@henryjackson2357
@henryjackson2357 5 лет назад
mnmcv1 I disagree, I think her chances were better then you're saying. I think enough people recognized that this was basically a kind of art film masquerading as a cheapie b-movie (Aldrich and Davis elevate the material to stately, artistic levels) and that Davis' work was a masterpiece of acting. Also, it was a box office bonanza, which I'm sure didn't hurt her. I def think people saw merit in both the film and her performance that she was a very possible front runner. I honestly believe she probably would have won if it hadn't been for Crawford's petulant meddling in the voting. She got just enough people to sway to Bancroft and it worked. Joan def believed Bette had a real shot at a third win and she wasn't going to allow that. (11/29/18)

These videos are just so interesting and so very well thought out and put together. I am intrigued with Gene Tierney and what your thoughts are on her … and Vivian Leigh and other actresses who were treated for “mental illness”. Depending on their age when this happened I am wondering if it’s due to symptoms from menopause and how that was treated back then in old Hollywood.

Maybe do one for Whoopi losing to Geraldine Paige in the 1980s. The good thing is that Whoopi was gracious and had kind things to say about her in a Howard Stern interview.

Have you seen Trip to Bountiful? It's a beautiful movie, and Page was loooong overdue for an Oscar. She was considered one of the greats, but never won. Look into her career. I'm not saying Whoopi didn't deserve an Oscar. I'm saying Page deserved hers. But to be completely frank, Page was a superior actress.
@jaydefelice9895
@jaydefelice9895 5 лет назад
I'll agree that Geraldine Page's performance was very worthy of the win. The fact that she lost several times before sealed the deal of course, but for me that's beside the point. Page was on point and perfection as Carrie Watts.

They still air classic movies though. AMC also has some of the best shows in TV history so idk what the problem is. Walking Dead was a phenomenon, and they had Mad Men and Breaking Bad. They never forgot their roots, they just added more to their programming to stay relevant.

Ari Entyse gawd I miss Mad Men. I’m still mourning it. I don’t think there will ever be anything as brilliant ever again. Sure there are plenty of high quality and prestigious tv shows but Mad Men never felt like a tv show to me, it was like literature.

Would love the following: 1966: Julie Christie winning her Oscar, like Leo McCarey's Oscar for "The Awful Truth", for the wrong film (She won it for "Darling" instead for "Doctor Zhivago"). 1941: Ginger Rogers beating Katharine Hepburn's comeback role. 1942: Joan Fontaine beating her sister.

I love this well-rounded review of Miss Crawford's career and highlights of her perseverance and determined hard work along with risk-taking. The low hanging fruit of anyone's life is the rumor and innuendo that is around after one passes away and is unable to defend oneself. Her movies stand for themselves as testimonials of her talents and grit as a woman who worked in Hollywood for decades.

My great aunt use to babysit me as a child, we watched all these old films whenever we were together. Joan Crawford was one of her favorite actresses, and we watched so many of her films. Next to Mildred Pierce, Sadie McKee is my favorite of Joan’s films. I really wish my great aunt and I could have met Joan to tell her how much her films mean to us...and how her films bonded my great aunt and I.
