Joan can talk intelligently about sports, politics and rock 'n roll - and look like a million bucks at the same time. BTW, one of the few interviewers who lets his guest talk. Well done all the way around.
Usually, women are just put in front of a stage and given a song to do. She writes, plays, and sings her own stuff. No gimmicks, just talent. She's awesome...........period.
She cowrote alot the sings like Cherry Bomb(Runaways, not the John Mellancamp...) She writes 99:/: of Unvarnished. 50:/: of Bad Reputation. Shes a classic rocker really with a punk attitude she started her own label with Kenny Tregunna. She never claimed to invent Rnr or be the best songwriter. Shes a dyed in he wool rocker not William Shakespeare.
Who cares about her sexual preference she is a rocker and I'll love her always. I just saw her in concert last Sunday with Billy Idol and they rocked the house. Joan coulld f*ck a rock and I could care less as long as she keeps the rock n roll coming! Love you Joan!
4:32; what she says about Hole, L7, Bikini Kill, and Babes In Toyland is absolutely correct. Those bands (as well as Team Dresch, The Slits, Sleater Kinney, The Distillers and so on and so on...) proved that women could truly rock and roll just as hard as their male counterparts could, if not harder. I'm not saying that there aren't any great female bands out today, it just seems like Joan is still considered an oddity in a world where in order for a female to make it in music they either have to be R'n'B/Rap divas (Rhianna, Nicki Minaj), ultra bitter pissed-off trapper-keepers (Taylor Swift, too many to count), faux-avant-garde pop stars (Lady Gaga), drunk party girls (Ke$ha, Katy Perry) or all of the above (Beyonce). I'm not saying I don't expect these artists to be popular and if you like, great! I just wanna know where is the room for the all girl punk band. Just take a listen to L7's "Fast and Frighten'" and you might see what I long for from some of today's artists.
It's great to see Joan finally get the respect she deserves. Her comments about sexism and how hard it is for female rockers to break through really ring true. Now if more women were respected for their selves and not just fleeting good looks. Great interview, as usual, Strombo.
Wow, JJ is still so hot and still rockin'! I've seen her 3 times in concert, 2 times as the warmup band and she was better than the mainliners! She is a classic!
If people don't care about her sexuallity, why mention it in the first place? Joan Jett is hot, even now she looks early 30s. I have always been a fan. Rock chicks know how to dress, that's what I say.
I saw Joan Jett & the Blackhearts at Amnesia Rockfest up by the front stage. Amazing time. She nodded at me and smiled during Crimson & Clover. Love her!
I don't think women have as much trouble as Joan says. Just look at all the women performers today (I'm women talking rockers), The bands Joan mentioned simple sucked thats why they no one hears about them or they don't exist. I love Joan Jett & wish she would get back to the early days of heavy power cord music that put her in the spot light in the early 80's! Keep on Rockin' JJ.
I love Joan jett so so much, threw the 70's and the 80's she changed the world of music and she is still my favorite singer, guitarist, human being how ever you say it I love her!
"Proclivities" is an odd choice of words. She's not vocal about her orientation. If asked, she doesn't deny it. But like many of us, she figures it's not a big deal and has nothing to with her music.
it really saddens me to see that people are still getting caught up on insignificant details such as sexual orientation. Why must we label people at all? It's 2010 people, time to change this pattern of prejudice. In a perfect world we wouldn't even question the sex of those we all sleep with! It's the fixation on it that is unhealthy, try approaching things with a COMPLETELY open mind instead. Some of you may think you're already doing so but using the term "homo" certainly says otherwise...
I always maintain that women who want to get into music should use people like JJ as role models, since they're the kind people respect the most....and damn, she is one AWESOME lady.
At around the 9:55 mark, George says "When we announced that you were coming on the show, the girls started freaking out!" And Joan says "Yeah?" with a little giggle- and then old Georgey ruins it by saying "And NOT in the way they start freaking out when Justin Timberlake's around." Come on, dude- you didn't have to shy away from what you REALLY meant. We all know what you really meant, and trust me, Joan doesn't mind!
Yes, she's beautiful..but why is every single comment I saw on the first page about things people want to do to her..sad. How about we talk about her great talent some more instead?
This woman has something intangible about her that identifies her as the real, triple-distilled McCoy of Rock 'n' Roll. Come back to Michigan on tour, Joan!
She's an amazing woman and i don't think anyone cares about her sexual orientation. Suberb musician, great vocalist, awesome guitarist !!! Long Live Joan Jett !!!
saw her live tonight. her mom died yesterday!!! She played such a good show but she seemed really out of it towards the end, I am so thankful that she went through with the show and I wish her the best
hey, she's touring with Alice again, I was just writing on another video, first show I ever saw, was Alice Cooper, and Joan opened in Aug. of 1981. 30 years ago, man. the crowd was tough on her.
great interview !! not only is joan beautiful, it shows here that she has class, and composure. and someday, the rock and roll community, and industry, will finally recognize the true groundbreaking pioneer of women in rock, that she is. keep up the good work, joan.
Part of the problem for the women bands that I've heard REALLY suck! There aren't enough all female or female lead singer bands out their that play good music...Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Pat Benetar, the go gos & a very few other women bands came out with some really great music during the 80's...The bands Joan just mentioned really fucking SUCK! They won't make it past the under ground band level...Instead of showing talent I think they are trying to show they can rock just as hard as male bands!
@MisterBrainiac Um, dude, she doesnt care what people think because thats her and thats how it should be. Im bisexual and thats not because of her, thats because of my own choice so yea, you should think before you say shit.
All my life I've heard people say "I am inspired by this" or "This person inspires me to..." So all my life I looked for that inspiration. I have always wanted something or someone to inspire me to do something great. I'm 19 years old now and I just found my inspiration. Joan Jett has done so much with her life. So many amazing things. She's inspired me to want to do something with my life. Something great. Something I can be proud of when I die. Thanks so much Joan. Ily^^
@glenneveaux she has never been one to smile a lot....check out all of her old interviews, she talks exactly the same. She's not an animated talker and never has been.
