The fact that this man, Tommy James, isn't in the R&R Hall is beyond tragedy! He's been smashing it for well over 50 + years, and his singing chops are still better than most (by FAR!!!). Put that man in the Hall while he's still alive and kickin'!!
Larkin*....the point is that all these award shows r faux virtue signaling....get no ratings n nobody cares...even a public school system loser should b capable or comprehending that
Why isn't Tommy James and The Shondell's in the RRHOF yet? I keep thinking about that band having a ton of singles success in the 1960s, and I looked them up to see if they were inducted. Tommy James and The Shndell's formed in 1964 and through the 60s had two huge Number 1 hits in America - 'the gold 'Hanky Panky' and 'Crimson and Clover', which also hit internationally. They wrote and performed 'ol skool' rock n roll, soft rock and psychedelic rock which also landed them 14 top 40 hits, including the aforementioned Number 1s and the following top 10s: "I Think We're Alone Now", 'Mirage', Mony Mony", Sweet Cherry Wine", and "Crystal Blue Persuasion." They were influential with some artists they inspired scoring huge hits with their songs in the 1980s, including Joan Jett and The Blackhearts' ('Crimson and Clover") which hit Number 7 in 1982, and Billy Idol's ('Mony Mony") hitting Number 1 in 1987, and Tiffany's ("I Think We're Alone Now) also hitting Number 1 in that same year. I was surprised that they were not in The Hall. In 2008, Tommy James and The Shondells were voted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame. They were real rock n roll stars, and Tommy James is still going after 61 of performing!
Joan was so ahead of her time- she was brave to cover this iconic song - and to retain the lyrics as originally written- resulting in Joan singing above her love for another woman. Back in 1982 this was revolutionary especially for a mainstream artist.
They all took it to another level, Dave Grohl head banging in and rockin' out with Gary Ryan was pretty wild too - I think they both liked it as well :D
@@patlaw398 That slag Madonna was inducted before Rush. Fucking Rush. What rock song did she have? Where’s the party? Woman couldn’t sing a note or play an instrument to save her life. It’s garbage. Joan Jett is a legend. She doesn’t need fake awards and accolades.
Tommy James recorded "Mony Mony", "Crisom & Clover", "Crystal Blue Persuation", "Hanky Pinky", "I Think We're Alone Now". Why this guy not in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? Just saying.
If you want to call screeching like some creature from a horror movie, reaching a high range yet not even hitting the right notes. You might just listen to that part again. I listen to it twice.
@@ehardin54 the notes in the key she was singing would be the e and fs she was hitting. They were correct notes, i think they didnt fit the song but just say you dont like it and move on 💀.
Saw "Tommy James & The Shondells" on a rare concert swing into Southern California last month. He kicked ASS at 72 years old - and had the voice of an angel! I'm finally convinced age is just a number. Met Tommy after the show, and the man is as humble, funny, and incredibly talented as he has been for over 50 years. When you "got it" you GOT it! God bless you, my Jersey brother.
At first I was thinking Miley did not belong there, but she really spiced it up and held her own. Tommy is under rated and made music history numerous times.
Maybe, but how much classier would it have been, if instead of saying "he wrote one of MY songs", instead saying "I covered one of HIS greatest songs"? Subtle difference, but so true, and wouldve likely meant the world to Tommy...
I am truly amazed Joanie. I knew you would pair up someday OMG girl Ill write about wheaton and the song you came up to me! I am so blon away! Fabulous!
I'm not necessarily a fan of Dave Grohl or Miley Cyrus, but I've loved Joan Jett since I first heard I Love Rock & Roll, and this is so awesome, with all of them bringing their own strengths to this song. It takes it from the originals to a new era. Fucking outstanding!
I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Miley at all, but I also know virtually nothing about her aside from the "twerking" phase she was in and that she was Hannah Montana. That's all I know. With that said, those backups were very surprising. When she opened her mouth to sing those backups, my jaw dropped. Like, damn! She's a young vocalist with an incredible register. It was a really nice addition to the performance. Edit: It's really discouraging to see how many people didn't like her singing and most have called her a "slut" or something along those lines in the same breath. Makes me wonder if they would've enjoyed it by just listening to the performance with a blindfold on. I don't get down with slutshaming. I don't understand what her sex life has to do with her vocal performance at all. To each their own, but she can definitely sing. Again, I've never been a fan of hers, but it's only because I have yet to find a song I can connect with on a deeper level. I think Wrecking Ball might've done that for me, but that's all I know of at the moment. It's important to recognize real talent when you see it.
Lilly Kathleen I like people like you who don't put there judgement on someone's talent because of their behaviour or antics. If you're interested I suggest you to listen to two songs by her that showcase her talent, Drive & FU. Also you should check out her Younger Now album witch she wrote all by herself.
Tommy James still sounds great. Love to see those 60' hit makers that still have it. I recently saw he has a memoir out that I'm going to get. Fascinating story. Like others, I think Tommy James and the Shondells rate HoF induction. They were one of the best American hitmakers in the age of the Beatles.
Joan has been helping young female performers to figure out how to survive the threatening world of show business for years. (She reached out to The Gits after their lead vocalist, Mia Zapata was murdered in 1993.) It's a relief to all of us that she is helping Miley, a beautiful, talented real wild child, to keep her clothes on and become a force for good. Rebels should stick together.
Miley just walked on stage with three absolute legends and still managed to steal the show! She has a once in a generation voice! This is an incredible performance by all involved. Truly a timeless song!
2:25 Guitar stickers: Ramones, Flogging Molly, Johnny Thunders, Social Distortion, those are the ones I can make out. I think Rancid and Bouncing Souls too. The Social D is particularly good form as the cover for the compilation "mainliner" shows a young Mike Ness' guitar with a sticker that says "I
Agreed...Joan should've introduced James not as the man who wrote one of HER biggest hits, but rather as the man who's biggest hit SHE covered...the difference may seem subtle but so TRUE. And Tommy James SHOULD be in the RRHOF himself already with the Shondells. Sometime's life really is NOT fair.
Awesome song by two of the greats. Couldn't finish it though. If someone forced you to have Cyrus show up to scream couldn't they have at least turned off the Mike?
Finally, someone with the same opinion that I have about Miley's performance. Her screeching sounded like a creature from a horror movie. The screeching never did hit a correct note. Anyone could notice that. And all of that thrashing her head around and jumping around on stage with her legs sprattled out just to draw all of the attention to herself, without any display of being Noble or respectful to the 2 performers who really mattered. Miley Cyrus should be ashamed.
@@ehardin54 Miley is like many artists today. They rely on what they show as opposed to singing or playing. She is very overrated and is only famous from what she did as a child. And that was all due to promotion from her father and Dolly.
I am so damn proud of you Joanie! I always knew you'd get there and WOW with style, my favorite song of the sixties and the one we met over! 47 years ago. I think Miley wasn't near born yet during this Not her era! IUR ERA second generations Tommy's 1st generation! Ironic when i saw Cherie in Octobrt to get you my letter tommy was in town playing Damn LOL Murphy timing but WOW
All the haters that left comments on here about Miley are now eating their pathetic words cos Miley has now blossomed in to the greatest, most talented singer of our generation.
Loved this!! Loved everyone in it! JJ's version was always my favorite but how awesome is Tommy here? And Dave Grohl, looking like he's having the time of his life, as always. And I thought Miley SLAYED. If people would give her a chance they would see she's actually quite talented. I think sometimes she's her own worst enemy. And Joan Jett is still hot AF in that snarly rock n roll way she always was!
Any guitarists here know what notes David Grohl is playing when he first enters the song? I always hear immense licks that involve repeating notes like this. If anyone knows it please leave the tab in a reply to this comment. Cheers from England!
Joan Jett.....Presence Personified.....No Record Company Would Sign Her In The Beginning Of Her Career.....So She Started Her Own.....And As They Say, The Rest Is Rock n Roll History.....
Eduardo Smiler I actually think that Miley switching to her old, slightly hysterical, 'teeny voice' adds some refreshing campiness to this otherwise trivial performance of the old classic. The song isn't ideal for this setup, but without that freaky vocal, it would just have been forgettable.
