Dame Joan Sutherland simply remains the supreme coloratura soprano of all time. Unforgettably, I saw her live 63 times. There were many other great singers during her era, but none surpassed La Stupenda, She was simply, unforgettably, the greatest, and, without any attitude about it whatsoever. There will never be enough superlatives for Our Joan, in my memories.
@@kbhprinsesse Forgive me for not listing all 63 performances individually, but "OUR JOAN" sang a lot at the Sydney Opera House 1970s - 1980s. I went as often as I could - I saw at least six Lucias - six La Traviatas - six Borgias etc etc. SHE WAS PHENOMENAL... SIMPLY A LEGEND.
I'm really fascinates by the difference between opera singers live and in recordings. I sadly never heard Dame Joan live but she always fills me with joy. The timbre, the ease and her sense of fun and no nonsense.
What a voice and what a singer! In the realm of dramatic coloratura, there will never be another quite like her, and in lyric coloratura, there are very few competitors.
@@kbhprinsesse oh my God. How much time do you have? I saw her Lucia do Lamermoor. three or four times... Maybe more. I saw her I Puritani. i and it was phenomenal. And that was with Samuel Ramey. I saw her Merry widow in San Francisco and she's an excellent comedienne. . She was wonderful in that. I saw her in one French opera. I cannot remember what it was. Perhaps Cendrillon by Massenet ? Oh Jesus. It was daughter of the regiment oh my God! it was her and Pavarotti in daughter of the regiment. We all died and went to heaven. They were both youngt. I'm so lucky to have heard Joan Sutherland live so many times. That truly is the voice of the century.. and please forgive me I know I'm leaving out several other operas. There is only one Joan.
OMG.......I am always speechless when trying to describe her voice. I personally found her voice to become more beautiful as she aged, and I first saw her live in Lucia in San Diego in the very early 60's. Gods' hand touched her throat and she and Richard did the rest.I believe I have this concert with MH on VCR (yep) but would love to get it on DVD.BluRay if available. There will never be another Dame Joan.
Her voice was perfect for some roles when she was young and had that fast shimmering vibrato, but in general I like her voice better as she matured. The middle got much richer, almost mezzo sounding and her high D's, her best notes, got bigger and more spectacular I think as she matured. Some of them close to 60 were mind boggling.
@@MrStpendouslvforjo And she was only about 44 when she made that album. Here Sutherland is about 60 and still sounds like a young soprano with a marvelous technique and incredible body to the whole range of her voice. She is a vocal virtuoso of the highest order.

Sutherland was marvelous; it makes you wonder what the quality of the original singers was. This was a big hit, a ton of people must have tried singing it. Was coloratura more common then or just not done very well?
I’m not familiar with this aria at all. But a lot of critics in the mid-1980s complained that Sutherland’s voice was shot by 1986. Well, let me straighten the record - I saw her onstage in the theater in those years, and even a bit later, in Puritani and Trovatore, and the voice was still spectacular. I assume this an encore in her joint Australian concert with Marilyn Horne?
If I remember correctly this was towards the end of the concert before the duet encore of Norma. She also sang the Vorri Spiegarvi by Rossini earlier in the concert. I for one very much enjoy Sutherland in the 80's on. She sang through coloratura like a gondelier steering the canals with ease!
So right you are Dave. It was the critics ears that were shot. Dame Joan could just "hum" and I would listen for hours. Just my opinion but even at the end of her career she was better than anyone singing today. Actually I like her voice even more as she aged. It was like burnished liquid gold. To me she was a beautiful woman with a voice from heaven. Her technique was hard earned and flawless. She was also a very kind and caring person. No diva antics from her. There will never be another Dame Joan. I am most grateful that it has been during my lifetime that she arrived and shared her voice with all of us.
Thanks, I would prefer the version in her album since that one is in correct key, this one is lowered. But Joan Sutherland is always my favorite soprano, I love her cadenza.
Many non singers get upset when a singer chooses to transpose to a key where their voice is more comfortable. Voices do change over time.....Dame Joan's darkened with age but was able to sing the most difficult repertoire almost up to the end (her final Lucia in 1988, Norma in 1989) because she transposed. I'm thankful she did instead of hanging it up.
