Dame Joan Sutherland Marilyn Horne Bellini, Norma: Mira o Norma ai tuoi ginocchi...Si, fino all'ore estreme; Direttore: Richard Bonynge; Sydney Opera House - 1986
Their blend of voices really is a marriage made in Heaven above... they sound so smooth in this fabulous piece by Bellini. Thank you so much for posting this delight for the senses. It is truly sublime 🌺
God bless this soul from HEAVEN, that posted this video. This person has no idea how much happiness he/she brought to people's lives!!! I'm eternally grateful!!!
Your comment was beautifully and eloquently expressed. And most of all so very true. In these very very difficult times that we are experiencing the world over, this remarkable video posting shows me that there is still beauty and with that beauty there is also hope for us all. The magnificent voices of Dame Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne along with Richard Bonynge leading the truly wonderful orchestra has been gifted to us listeners by just posting and I like you I am eternally grateful. Thank you again for your comment. It inspired me to respond.
Marilyn was a very exquisite Adalgisa!! Joan was a fabulous Norma in this! Wow. It’s just so soothing to the ear. The intelligence of these two women in their musicality was just unforgettable!!
I recall watching this concert live as it was broadcast on ABC TV in Australia. This was at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. It was wonderful. The colour and warmth in Hornes voice contrasts beautifully with the coloratura of Joan’s.
@@inboxmail2053 a) she is mezzo- what?, b) I don't like Tebaldi's voice, there are at least a dozen of sopranos that were better than her c) I express my personal opinion and don't need your censorship.
(a) If you are aware that Horne is a mezzo why did you comment "Two greatest sopranos of XX century"? (b) you may not like Tebaldi's voice but I am just as entitled as you are to state my opinion with being accused of trampling on your fragile sensitivities. That is what an adult debate entails.
@@inboxmail2053 The adults respect each other tastes and refrain from imposing their own likes and dislikes. That are intelligent adults. I find Tebaldi's voice dull and never could listen to opera with her till the end. But I won't tell this to Tebaldi's admirers. It is called tact.
My own sense of tact is clearly as finely honed as yours. I am far too polite to ever say to a Joanie fanboy that she is a mushy , trilly one trick pony and far too matronly sounding for much of the recordings her and her tepid conducting hubbie put out.
It's just stunning how Horne and, particularly, Sutherland (more than 7 years her senior) in the twillight of their careers could pull off singing of this magnificent quality and musicianship of such amazing taste supported by great techniques that allowed them to really enact their musical ideas and vocal purposes almost as perfectly as you could expect from any young great soprano and mezzo in their prime. This is, surprisingly, a veritable reference in how this scene should be sung, I don't even have to cut them some slack for their age and decades of intensive career.
Ms. Horne wasn't in the twilight of her career. She retired from classical performances in 2000, and continued to perform musical theater rep until the mid 2000s or so.
This version with these two stellar singers is wonderful. I really miss the days of the golden age of opera. When Dame Joan passed in 2010, it all ended. It's too bad that we don't have any singers of their talent any more.
Just sat and listened to these two wonderful singers. They both were always outstanding as soloists and together!!!! I have just been to Heaven and back. Outstanding, Clear Powerful Proper singers. Thank you
Fantastche !
@@Fedeilfico Yes and you didn't understand my comment about pigeon holes are only comfortable for pigeons. Perhaps Jessye Norman could explain it better than I can. Oh wait. She invented it.
Duas lendas.
BRAVISSIMAS.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I know Dame Joan was still singing the role of Norma at this time but not sure if Ms. Horne was still singing Adalgisa as she was in demand singing the big Rossini roles at this point.
A fabulous concert for sure but they were at their zenith in the 1960s - check out the Decca 1963 recording (taken at the higher original key) or some of the live pirates: Covent Garden 67 and I very much like the San Francisco 1972 with Tourangeau - fabulous. I agree that Freni and Scotto are excellent. Love that rare Mercadante duet on it too.
@@baritonebynight I quite respect both ladies, Horne and Tourangeau. Though if I were to choose between the two, I'd definitely go with Horne. I must however acknowledge that I was completely blown away by Tourageau's performance as Elizabeth the 1st in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda alongside Sutherland. I haven't found anyone in that role who sang it better for me.
If there IS an after life and I get there and these composers haven't continued writing music for a couple of centuries and we don't get to go to a concert like this every night, I'm gonna be PISSED!
@@baritonebynight Ms. Horne doesn't "try to out sing" anybody, she just shines.... People can enjoy making music together and still sound horrible. For amateurs it's fine. But if you're trying to sell a performance, you'd better be good, no matter if you enjoy yourself or not, this is an obligation to those who paid for a ticket. Listeners don't need Ms. Horne's advice (or such pathetic moralizing as this comment), they have their own ears and eyes and minds and if they don't like something or do like something they are entitled to express their opinion. And so, my independent opinion is that Ms. Sutherland sounds awful, aged, artificial, while Ms. Horne shines. All the best to you baritonebynight, enjoy your music making!..... :=)
@@evelynkatz1301 Ah....so you were putting down one singer by praising another. That is in very poor taste. Save your well wishes for one who needs them.....or who cares.
