Joann Fabrics Bankruptcy and Walmart Fabric (what this means for you)

Joann Fabrics filed chapter 11 bankruptcy. Makers, creators, and sewist, what are your local options? Joann fabrics has over 800 stores and Walmart has over 4600 stores in the US but not all of the stores carry fabric.
With a restructuring plan in the works for Joann Fabrics, many stores may stay open. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
Some Walmarts carry fabric and some don’t. You may be able to find limited pre-cut packages in stores without fabric.
Public opinion varies about both of these stores.

I shop at Walmart online, as I do with JoAnn. Walmart's stock seems empty on the things I want, so I have to return over and over. JoAnn is more expensive, though.

Wal-Mart has its good and not so good points. Good. All notions way cheaper and same brands as Joann's. The fabric is decent. I make bags and house stuff like place mats, napkins, and a rare quilt. My only complaints are fabric is only marked down for clearance and no one is ever at the cutting table.

I have tried to purchase fabric at Walmart and there is never anyone around to cut fabric. I even asked several employees and no one ever came.

I do shop for fabric at Walmart, but only online now. There is never anyone at the cutting counter and no way to call for someone. I have found both the Waverly brand and the Pioneer Woman brand to be quality fabric.

Waverly fabric is the only truly decent fabric walmart sells. It feels ok, smooth not rough. Their other fabric is lousy and cheaply made.

I shop both stores. I worked at Jo Ann's when it was House of Fabrics in the early 1980s. They have evolved into a real 1 stop shop for people who sew and do crafts. I live in Los Angeles County, and have access to several Walmart and Jo Ann's stores. Walmart is good for certain fabric and supplies, however in my opinion, no store could replace Jo Ann's overall. I hope they are able to remain open and in business.

Perhaps a better comparison would be to Hobby lobby than to Walmart. At least HL has some other fabrics besides cotton and polar fleece.

Like JoAnna's fabric much better than Wal marts. Their fabrics are of a better quality.More patterns to chose from and many fabrics to make clothing from.

Hobby lobby stop doing coupons, but they have all fabric on sale every other week 40% off . I have reverted to buying fabric by mail. Moods and Fabric Hut.

I do occasionally shop Walmart for fabric mostly becasue it's much closer. was verydisappointed at Christmas, absolutely NO Christmas fabric to be found. Also love Joann's; their selection is huge and quality fabric. hope they don't disappear.

Well, Walmart is ok for the standard notions but I don’t buy their fabrics. The quilt shops in my area have all closed so I will be shopping online. I feel that Connecting Threads is the best online shop for me. It’s an American company and I believe the cotton is grown in America. I could be wrong about the cotton, (at 74 my memory is fading, lol!) Anyway, their fabric is great, I’ve been working with solids a lot lately, the selection is good and the shipping is quick. There are also Etsy shops selling the full range of fabrics. I’m sorry that Joanne’s is in trouble and I hope they can re-structure and keep some stores open.My heart goes out to the employees that loose their jobs!

The Wal-Mart near me used to have a fabric section like the one in the video. Last year they downsized to precuts and a handful of bolts. Their Waverly fabrics are nice but if I want yardage I have to get it online. The closest JoAnn’s had a lot of empty shelves even before bankruptcy!

My Wal-Mart did away with all their fabric on bolts. They only carry the prepackaged 1 and 2 yard cuts. Very disappointing!

This is apples and oranges... Limited selection at Walmart. No selection... BUT cheaper prices on what you can manage to find. However MY Walmart has almost completely gotten rid of fabric now. No more bolts of fabric and no more cutting or service 🙁 (only small prepackaged pieces of fabric). Hope Joann survives ❤ there are NO OTHER fabric stores left in my area 😢

The correct information is that Joanne filed chapter 11 on a Wednesday and was purchased on a Thursday. Walmart could not ever compare to Joan. I don’t like Post like this because it is false information and one fabric store that is left. We are all feeling blessed to have it and will frequent it!

I like your differences between the two stores but given I would probably shop at Joanne’s than Walmart. The two Walmart stores we have took out the fabric. There are still notions that if you need in a pinch. I crossstitch so if I need some skeins I have to go to Joanne’s, Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Walmart scaled over half down on their skeins of thread for crossstitch. I go in there quite frequently looking for thread and they dont have it. I have to wait to go to the other stores. They are in different county. Of course if you’re looking for white, black or ecru, they usually have it. Above all though I like Hobby Lobby the best. We just recently got that store.Michaels was the one I always shopped at, but it’s changed some. Overall Joanne’s is a good store.

Thanks for sharing…. I visited Walmart and checked out their fabric. I was so not impressed. The quality is not very good. I have used it for hot pads and mask during the pandemic but for quilts and clothing, I would pass.

I can tell you right now…. Walmart fabric can NOT compare with JoAnn’s fabric! I’ve been sewing for years and every time I used fabric from Walmart I wound up having issues. And the quality of their fabric leaves a lot to be desired too.

You don't even know what is going on. I have beennin some of their walmart stores and they are selling everything that has to do with sewing. Jo Ann's is going out of business too. Michael's is supposed to be selling material.

It's a new word, maybe a blend of sewer and artist. I'm old-fashioned too and prefer seamstress. But I don't make a big deal about it.

Since nobody says "seamster," and tailor is a different skill entirely, Im fine with sewist. Seamstress has been a profession, and I'm not a professional, so the "home sewist" title describes me better.
