Joann Fabrics Set to Exit Bankruptcy (What happens now!) 

What’s the one thing you would want to see in your local Joann’s?

About shoplifting, I stopped a woman with an overflowing cart of items, she was pissed. I went to management and told them what happened, she informed me that corporate told them not to stop people from shoplifting for the employees safety. If that's the issue they really need a security guard at the entrance/exit. This cart had thousands of dollars of product. So very sad.

I really like the employees and management staff! They are always short-handed but they are friendly and knowledgeable about what they have for sale.

Okay, I agree that being able to go in a store and actually feel the fabric is vital, especially for garment material. I have been disappointed, in the past, because the knits were almost all polyester. If I am going to go to the trouble to make garments for myself (or especially the grandchildren) I want more natural fabrics, including viscose, linen, bamboo cottons, etc...Unique fabrics are vital. Their quilting fabric selection looks appealing but, as one person commented, too much fleece, flannel, etc.. I miss "quality" fabric stores...and there seems to be great options...IN EUROPE. Arrgh.

At my local Joannes, the manager is rarely seen. He is generally extremely busy. They need an assistant manager at this location. They need to deal with the patterns. They’re still in boxes. There must be seven boxes of patterns that have yet to be put away. They say they don’t have the time, they don’t have the time to clean the bathroom either. They definitely need better help and they need to put the signs up when there is a sale on things especially patterns. The manager in the Hollywood location is excellent. He’s on top of everything. Give that guy a raise.

I don't sew, but my mom and grandmothers all did. But I remember many weeks I would go with a close friend, who sewed well, to pick out an inexpensive remnant. Then we would use Mom's sewing machine. My friend would whip up a new pretty skirt for me to wear for a Friday evening at the local teenage dance hall. It was so fun to get a new skirt for about a buck back in the 60s. So I know Joann's is a very important spot!

I love my local Joann’s and would love to see some craft and sewing classes

I loved working at Joanns even working every area of the store. I even enjoyed teaching the sewing and quilting Classes.

I wish my local store had more staff and better quality fabric.

I am so glad that Joannes is not going to close. I love Joannes. They have a Lotta stuff, arts and crafts and fabrics and patterns and threads. I’d like to fill my fabric before I buy it

It’s expensive unless on sale! Hardly worth making clothes by time you get pattern and fabric! You could buy a nice outfit at Pennys or Dillards

When I looked last at board of directors none seemed to have come from garment/fabric industry. That needs to change...

Thanks for the update. My Joann’s hasn’t been staffed well for years-even pre-pandemic. I put in complaints about some of the management team pre-pandemic and haven’t seen them in the store for some time. I was in the store recently and saw that the fabric was well stocked but the home decor was sparse. Also there was an armed security person just inside the entrance.

I would like to see the paper craft section to go back where it was before. All craft stores scaled back a lot. They focused more on cricut type of crafts and their branded products.

Our store in AZ already closed its doors. My daughter tried to get a job at our JoAnns and they never called her. She even went in to talk to the manager. She has experience at another fabric store. She sews, crochet, and knitting mostly, but is gifted in other crafts as well. I think she wasn't hired because everyone is so busy working they don't have time to hire.

I worked at Joanns almost 30 yrs. ago. The managers have incentives to keep labor costs down, so they always go with the minimal they think they can get away with. They also don't pay well. My local stores have large sections that are very low on stock in the cotton section. I hope they can get their act together. Not many other options with a good selection.

Thanks for the update :) At time stamp 6:14, that yarn is fun to work with and you do not need to know a single stich or have a single tool. I know nothing of knitting and have fun making blankets with this yarn. Lots of how to videos with this type of yarn online. Seeming you are a garment/tot bag/purse kinda girl, I think you would be able to come up with ways to use your finished knit yardage to make something more, it would be a way to have a bit of the knitting world in your life. Our store fabric area was about 75 percent less than it was a year ago. And there was almost no garment materials. It was all quilting cotton, fleece, and upholstery rolls. The paper crafting shelves were empty. I mean row after row of empty pegs. No one to cut fabric and they had moved the fabric up close to the registers and only one register open. But no one available to help you get anything. I walked in thinking the items I needed for some wardrobe items I needed to make and some paper crafting things and had money with me to spend. But I ended up walking out of store with nothing. I had to order online from another online store.

Thank you for this video! I am glad Joann will apparently still be around - pattern sales, Gutermann thread, some interfacing and fabric are what I buy there. I know there are nicer fabrics online but I am not a fan of buying something I can't see in person. I know some folks at the Joann I shop at the most and they are all lovely - one lady told me about the shoplifting and I was shocked because I didn't think enough people sewed so that there would be a market for stolen fabric, but on second thought it made sense - she said they take the whole bolt! I'd like to see better quality fabrics at Joann - there is a demand for that as so many on RU-vid buy stuff online to get really nice fabrics Joann doesn't have.

More staff! One person can’t be at the cash register to check people out and be at the fabric counter to cut fabric. Need more staff to restock and who does the hefty work of unloading the delivery truck? If they are done with bankruptcy it’s time to hire more staff. 9:45pm

Wow! Your Joanns is setup beautifully! My closest one, the majority of the fabric section is a madhouse. It is hard to actually see the fabrics without digging and the aisles are too narrow to comfortably browse. They have the shevles stacked higher than the average with the top couple of shelves being slanted leaving the bolts to lay on their side. The staff are always nice though, so I appreciate that. My store is another one who carries entirely too much fleece. I would much rather have 100% cotton and cotton flannel options. Thank you for showing this, it restores my faith that some Joann's are nice and comfortable to walk through. ❤

I visited our local Joanne’s this week. I agree with others that the staff working the floor are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Our yarn and fabric supply was good. What was missing were various notions, things that are easy to get online. The idea that they don’t have time to get product out rings true. I went looking for a particular fabric. My app said that the store had it, but the clerk and I could not find it on the shelf. Other colors of the pattern, yes, but not the one I wanted. I came home and ordered it, thinking it would come in a few days. Before the end of business I receive the note that it was ready for pick up. It was. Being a nosy person I asked a clerk about the health of our store and she said that corporate had invested $ in it and they are proceeding as usual. I told her that made me happy and we both smiled.

In my local Joann’s I’d like to see more tools (cutting, measuring, etc.) I went in recently to buy a french curve and they didn’t have anything other than flexible tape measures! I’d also like to see more fabric suitable for classic men’s wear.

I swore off Joann a year ago. The store is woefully understaffed and it's dirty. What finally killed it for me, tho, was checking out. Time after time the prices came up incorrectly. I'm pretty patient, but it just became too much trouble. Thank you for the update.

More than 20 years ago, I worked for Joannes and moved up from assistant manager to manager of a pretty big store. They kept cutting our staff hours that we were allowed to schedule. We often only had two people in this huge store and had to man the cutting counter as well as the cash register as well as unloading the trucks and unpacking the freight and putting up signs for sales and changing out the planograms, which were never exactly what the shelves in my store looked like. It was an impossible task and I grew to hate the company. Obviously, I have not worked for them for many years and I still shop at Joannes and love the really good, variety of items to choose from at great discounted prices most of the time. It would be awful if they closed because there’s nobody else that’s quite like that. Hobby lobby doesn’t have as good prices and Michaels is more crafts and less fabric. For people who like to sew clothing it’s still sometimes tough to find, the right fabric at Joannes, but it’s better than nothing. I miss the days of house of fabrics and and Minnesota fabrics.

The several locations of Joann in my area have a lot (too much for me) of fleece. They have a nice supply of silky, knit fabrics and some fancy fabrics. Each also has a nice collection of cottons. However, I would like to see some high quality and more modern designs in the cotton section. I do knit but normally don't buy any yarn at Joann. They carry the trendy yarns and mostly acrylics. They have some cotton as well. I work with silks, wool and wool blends, bamboo, cottons blends, etc., which are not available in my area stores. I do like the selection of crafts and other goods. I'm surprised at what they do carry, and appreciate in person shopping. However, the stores are not well staffed any longer (at least in my area- New England). No cashiers in place, you must ring a bell for service. I once worked as a consultant years ago and even then, was left alone at the cutting counter with a line to the back of the store. The manager sat in the back room watching the sales receipts be rung up and her paycheck rise for the solo work I was producing. Needless to say, once I realized what was going on, I and the "other cutter" left our positions. We were tasked to the cutting table, consulting with customers, and replacing fabric cut. There never was time to complete everything and we were expected to always upsell notions while cutting. We were told to call for backup by management if a line formed at the cutting area. I soon realized there was no backup staff present or hired. One day I took a 15 minute lunch break only to find the same customers in line waiting for me to return while the manager remained in the backroom knowing the line that was waiting. Management needs a drastic overhaul imo.

Agree with the staffing issues but like other companies they don’t really hire full time because they don’t want to pay benefits. Your older store is much more tidy than my new one, it is still a mess. The one thing there was very little of were trims! No webbing selection just a few meh things. They also had boxes of patterns sitting next to the pattern drawers. This was confusing because I didn’t know if they were clearance or what. They were all mixed up and it was really a pain to try and find anything. That was a turn off. I did find some surprisingly nice squishy black vinyl in a flat fold that was only $4.69 which a made a bag with .

My local store in Florida had enough fleece to outfit the Russian Army.

There is always a boatload of fleece at my local store. I’ve learned to time my visit, because certain days and times are very busy. I hope they restock some of their own brand of yarn, and have a bigger selection of yarn

I love that our Joann’s still has a super fast parking lot pickup option. I can order online and usually have products delivered to my car within 2 hours.

I've never had a problem with the local Joann's Fabrics.

My JoAnn’s has a ton of fleece and flannel. My staff is fabulous and very nice and helpful.

Specialty fabrics like Lacy with decorative bead work. What's crazy is that I can go to downtown Los Angeles and it is really cheap.

My Joann fabrics store is almost wiped out. I haven't seen new stock on the shelves for a few months.

The pricing policies need desperate revisions. Jacking up the base price in order to run obscure, limited date, brochure ad sales on products is frustrating, confusing, and NOT conducive for steady traffic. EX: A 12 page brochure fora bi-weekly ad will show “NOW 66% OFF.” When looking at the small print you find that particular sale is ONLY good on one line of particular fabric or notion, Tues, between 10:00 am and. 1:00 pm. And excludes the following…. Then you have the BONUS B1G3 for the early birds 10-11…. These marketing techniques are worn out psychosis from the 70’s. They need to up their game to stay in business.

I love Joanns ! I have to drive an hour to get to the closest one but, I do it because I enjoy shopping there.❤

I always gripe that there's only one joanns in my town, and it doesn't have a viking dealer. But I'll accept being able to have a joanns at all. Without joanns id be stuck with walmart and hobby lobby fabric 💀

Our small local store has very bare shelves. I am afraid to ask if they are closing. The smaller store has always had more books than the super JoAnn's across town. The super JoAnn's has never been as well stocked as some I have shopped at in other locations.

My local Joann’s is really good. They might need more staff, but the employees and manager they do have, are like the ones you describe. I like this store a lot… north San Diego County.

So there prices will go up, to offset the the loan.

Joann's has excellent thread sales. Material sales are good too. I often buy from MSQC, that has awesome sales. Excellent fabric quality too😊

Staff shortest is definitely a problem. We move state to state every 2 yrs cause we are military, and I can attest to Jo-Anns being short staffed everywhere. There's usually only 3 at best. 1 working the cash register and 1 the cutting counter and 1 restocking. It's not good, and I love Jo-Anns. I still prefer going to Jo-Anns, then Hobby Lobby and Michaels do not have fabric selections, nor does it carry a wide variety of yarn like Jo-Anns.

It’s about an hour from my house to the closest Joann’s. I do it like the store. They have a lot of crafts and very little fabric. I miss Hancock’s.

I would rather JoAnn’s focus on the yarn and fabric plus the tools and patterns needed for those crafts. Let other stores carry all the other stuff. I rarely go down those aisles. It annoys me that I cannot find the quality fabrics I need but there are aisles of junk.

The one near me (N. California) has way too much fleece, flannel, and character prints. Not so much fashion fabrics. Stretch fabrics like jersey are mostly polyester. It would be nice to see quality cotton jerseys and French terry fabrics.

The JoAnn in Woodbury Mn. Has no Velcro, lots of empty shelves, low selection of thread, the condition of the store is poor.

They aren't closing in my area. I have asked them and they said their store is remaining open.

It would be great if Jo-Anns merged or collaborated with Sew & Vac Centers. Jo-Anns needs to sell better quality sewing machines than just the mainstream brands that Walmart and Hobby lobby offer.

I would like to experience a clean bathroom. The one in Edina MN is disgusting. Always has been. If they fixed that people would feel more comfortable about browsing longer or taking their children there. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Where are you looking at ? The 2 in 100 miles of my home both closed. They never had knowledgable staff. The prices were astronomical. The selection was more awful. I paid right ar $20.00 a piece for some patterns just prior th them filing bankrupcy. Oh, I am in S MS. The next nearest open store is is about 90 miles away in a neighboring state. I plan on visiting I plan to visit FABRIC WAREHOUSE in North Mississippi when buying cloth again.@ 2682 S Harper Rd. Corinth, MS it is almost a 5 hr drive to get there. I will be in my van and use my credit card. Also as I am disabled I will spend the night.

That would've been a tragedy to shut down JoAnns!!

There have always been huge amounts of stock that has not been unpacked. As far as assistance, past employees have said that they are told not to get sidetracked helping customers. I don’t think Joann’s quality or prices are very high quality.

IMHO JOAnns desperately needs more staff, to help customer, and if the store were cleaned up and better organized would make huge improvements, including more sales overall.

You can't get out of a financial crisis by borrowing more money to pay for already owed debts. That will get them into deeper debts

Would like to see garment fabric silk noil, linen fabric in wide Lakes, beautiful high-quality cotton that are not quilting cotton. Change your store from a fleece back to a fabric store get rid of the permeates and there are days I can’t be in the store fill in the inventory in your notions department, which is bare in my store, most importantly, quality, garment, fabrics, natural fiber, quality, garment, fabrics

I miss a good button selection- not worth going there imo. I see why sewers buy vintage now. Even a non sewer can feel the difference in fabrics.

Six months ago (?), the Joann in Cary, NC, had MANY longtime, knowledgeable employees. Very suddenly, almost ALL of those employees were let go. The young people that work there now TRY to be helpful, but, they aren’t sewists, or crafters. They don’t really know anything about fabric, or notions, or sewing machines, or patterns. They DO know where stuff is located in the store 🙂

I used to get organic cotton at Joanns. Now they don't carry it and I have to order on line. Even their very limited organic options was better than nothing.
