On August 15, 2022, we mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of former Buffalo Philharmonic Music Director Lukas Foss. His ground-breaking tenure (1963-1971) put the BPO at the epicenter of the new music world, brought the orchestra to Carnegie Hall several times, introduced many new works to our audiences, and strengthened the contemporary skills of our musicians.
Cellist Monte Hoffman was appointed to the BPO by Maestro Foss, and became a dear friend of the Maestro for the rest of his life. We hope that you enjoy Music Director JoAnn Falletta and Monte's fond memories of Lukas.

Wonderful conversation. I grew up in Buffalo and remember seeing two BPO concerts at Kleinhans Music Hall conducted by Lukas Foss and I appreciated that he usually included some "new music" in each program he conducted (something that Michael Tilson Thomas also did in Buffalo and later in San Francisco, close to where I now live). During his tenure in Buffalo, Lukas Foss also hosted occasional local television programs where he would just talk on various artistic topics or interview guests-as a kid from a blue-collar background, I remember thinking that Foss must be an example of what it meant to be a true "intellectual," in part inspiring me to study hard, read a lot, and aim for higher goals beyond my lower-economic environment. In recent years, I've searched for recordings of Foss's compositions. I've wondered why he is not better known. I was glad to stumble upon this RU-vid video and the reference to the 100th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall in 2022. May JoAnn Falletta's efforts spark wider recognition of Lukas Foss's legacy, talent, genius, and his support of modern composers.

When Lukas and the Philharmonic visited the campus at Geneseo N.Y. in 1969, I believe, he came to my house and had a spaghetti dinner with my housemate John Sisti, a friend, Rocco DiPietro (now a world famous composer and performer and author) who studied with Lukas and another friend. We sat on the floor and chatted until he had to get ready . We used to see rehearsals for free from backstage at Kleinhans. That was before I went to Geneseo while we were in high school.

chicken, greasy fingers.... yes he was a sloppy eater but so much fun to be around. A genius, I was lucky enough to perform his oboe concerto with him conducting. Wow.

Buffalo is a delightful city all except for the snow and lake effect.
