Contemporaneous, an ensemble of 23 musicians devoted to bringing to life the most imaginative music of now, performs harpist/singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom's "Cosmia" in a world premiere arrangement by composer Dylan Mattingly. Featuring singer Lucy Dhegrae, this performance is from Contemporaneous's May 2019 show RODA at Littlefield NYC in Brooklyn, NY.

Like. Modal hocketing, Irish interlude. Key change in case you were dozing. Okay, no enemy of repetition. She has occasional tuning problems, and a tight jaw, but I like the sotto. Fiddles out of tune. I could do with some graceful non-4/4.

This arrangement and performance proves how much thematic and harmonic material lives within Joanna's harp and voice in Cosmia. It's like the overture from a complete musical. Only Bjork seems also to be able to inhabit the boundary of genres so naturally, as Sondheim did before them.

A bit like more "disjointed" than original. Not saying as a judgement, but just a phenomenon that gets me puzzled as I cannot pinpoint it. If such an impression makes sense, why is it so? Is it more in arrangement (more diverse timbres) or in performance (more strict rhythm necessary for coordination)?

I think it’s because the original orchestration is built around her harp, and here there is no harp. So it feels less cohesive.

It seems to me a performance issue derivative from how the melodic lines are travelling from instrument to instrument, which means it's really hard to get it right. But I'm not sure.
