Hello friends,
I'm currently in the weeds of interviewing and on top of that, trying to sort out some family matters. Therefore, I apologize for the lack of uploads. For this video, I thought it would refreshing to switch things up and do a quick Q&A. It's a bit chatty, but I hope you like it!

Hi friends ~ I apologize that this video took me a bit to edit. Life has been doing its thing and pulling me in all kinds of directions lately so I've also been running on low sleep and energy. If there are any minor editing mistakes, please kindly turn a blind eye 🤭Hope you all are doing well and please let me know what else you would like to see/learn from this job-searching series!

My daughter is in tech and has been out of work since the end of October. She just started a new job and she's excited for the company and potential. I agree that after making the decision to leave your job it would be a shame to settle for less than the position you really want. Hang in there. You're going to find something.

“I was on some delusional shit….” Lol. Thank you for being honest!!!!! I honestly appreciate your honesty. As an older person, I have to tell younger folks that there is real competition out there so don’t assume that you will immediately find a gig after quitting another. Find a job before quitting. You will find something. I feel it! Take care ✨✨✨

There's a lot of this attitude in the bay area of "oh yah thousands of jobs, so easy, get 300k salary, so easy, work 6hr a day so easy, grind leetcode so easy". Like Bro come on, I been on linkedin and looking at the market, it's scary and hard. But that doesn't mean we just let our manager walk all over us, set some boundaries even during tough times, give me at least 20min lunch, no more 9pm-midnight meetings, let's have productive meeting instead of being critical of every little things like the color of the font or the position of the labels. : - ) 12hr days I can handle, but asking me to work overnight when there's no clear deadline, that's a red flag if I ever seen one.

As a hiring manager in tech, every post we put up gets hundreds of candidates. Yes, it's true that the candidates who have the correct resumes for the jobs they are applying for have a higher chance of getting an interview, but also I'll point out that the quality of candidates is ridiculously strong right now. I'd really recommend that people try to be intentional with what they're applying for. I see resumes for senior roles that require a minimum of 7 years of experience and people with less than 3 applying. Going through around 400 resumes per job opening, only about 5% of them will make it to the first interview. This isn't because of volume, it's because most candidates aren't qualified for the senior roles we are hiring for. I'd imagine that junior roles are infinitely more competitive. Even if only 5% of 400 resumes make it to the next stage, there are usually 5 outstanding candidates in that pool. It really can come down to minor things that make one applicant the best vs a very close second.
@kaskahea1274
@kaskahea1274 22 дня назад
If a majority of these positions require 7 + years of experience why isn’t stated in required qualifications? 😵 That is crazy to go thru 100 + applicants. Whew! That is not easy!
@chevyjazz
@chevyjazz 22 дня назад
@@kaskahea1274 we do state it. It takes weeks for us to put together a proper job description. We also manually review every application so it can take a few days to review them all. I tend to focus on more senior roles so the qualifications we ask for are requirements that are important. If you don't have them, it is pretty obvious in the initial screening call if you get to that stage. Two years ago we could barely get any applicants and now we have an inundation of them. There's been very little balance in between.
@kaskahea1274
@kaskahea1274 22 дня назад
@@chevyjazz 😮 Wow! Sounds stressful. There must be alot of pressure to find those exceptional top candidates. Thank you for sharing this insight.
@chozinthet6366
@chozinthet6366 22 дня назад
@@chevyjazz It's right on both sides because some candidates think they have confidence that they can be a good fit even though they read the job description, they will still apply if 70% of the requirements are matched because different companies have different kinds of evaluation over candidates. For example, a company gave my friend a job although he doesn't have a strong experience because they liked his responses when they interviewed. That company said they wanted a reliable person and they think it's more important than training. You may be looking for a perfect candidate but those perfect candidate will leave the company quickly if the company can't fulfill their needs and they know they can get a job easily with their excellent skills.

Julia!! Good to see you again :) Re: the text on the screen about how it would have been easier to find this specific role that you’re looking for if you have devoted all of your past 3 months into the job search instead of also content creation: I’d challenge you to think otherwise. The reason why you’re creating content regardless of your full-time role suggests that it fulfils a different purpose/yearning of yours, and I cannot imagine switching that out for full-time job search in a way that would’ve accelerated you getting the role that you want next. Life isn’t a binary. Our “what ifs/shoulda/coulda/woulda” assume a lot about how things would turn out when that’s not how life works; when you change one variable, everything else around it does too. So go easy on yourself! Job search is STRESSFUL enough. You’re doing a GREAT job going for what you want and believing that you are the sh!t!! Simply because it’s taking the market and employers a while to discover you doesn’t negate that. 加油, I’m rooting for you!

I recently quit my job, which was a dream at one point and the whole reason of every step I took during my educational and professional journey. The decision was definitely emotionally overwhelming and it scared me for months. But now I am over it and very mindful of where I go next. In fact, in the meantime, I launched a business and embarked on a content creation journey. Unfortunately, my runway for expenses didn't leave much, so I had to take another job. But, altogether, I feel like these are the right steps for my long-term goals and life. As I watching you sharing your experience, I just want to say you are brave and not alone. We deserve better, whatever that means in our terms :))

As a person who finally has a full-time job after getting laid off from a company closure, and due to circumstances lived minimally on unemployment and working part-time substitute teaching after unemployment ran out to get by for 7 months, my only advice is don't stay in a stagnate job. I did and regretted it. Did it help me? No, I should have jumped ship way earlier. But apply for these jobs you would love to work at first, then whatever else. Then after 6 months, if you run into the same issue I did and no one hires from those ideal jobs, then temporarily settle. Do you have to stay at said settled place of employment longterm? No, keep moving forward and studying. That job that's right for you out there, you just may have to settle momentarily and use that as a stepping stone to your ideal job. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers on your job search regardless. May you get employed much sooner tha i did. Lovely video as always.

Regarding the identity crisis during unemployment, I decided to introduce myself as a freelancer instead of an unemployed person". I quit my job to upskill, and I am freelancing during this period. So, I am not exactly unemployed, and I think I should really validate my efforts instead of dismissing them. In your case, I don't see why you can't introduce yourself as a RU-vidr because you're clearly a successful one (even if you don't see it as a permanent job)

This journey is definitely relatable to me as a former Big4 Senior Data Scientist. I've been unemployed since June 2023 after a mass tech layoff. I had to sign a social media contract not to post anything so I lost my YT monetization when I stayed at that job because it discouraged me. During my last layoff in 2020, I found more success applying to 75-100 applications per day for 3 months and I sprinkled a week/weekend of relaxation time in there. I haven't done that strategy yet again but I am going to try it out this month. I was working other non-tech jobs early this year but I had to quit them to focus on my time on tech interviews. Good luck on the job search!

I just want to say that this video series of yours have made me feel somewhat better about my current situation. I've also willingly left a job back in February due to the toll it has taken on my mental and physical health. I was and still am struggling to accept the fact that I am doing this to prioritize my own wellbeing. I became a recluse and withdrawn as I face rejections after rejections, and feeling shame and embarrassed to face my peers/friends because they are "well off" career-wise. The job market has been tough - and will probably be tough for a while, and some days it gets so hard to deal with the anxiety of the unknown future. Watching you go through this with a very positive attitude is inspiring. And the happiness and carefree vibes are really showing. I hope I'll get there too. Hang in there, you'll land something so rewarding, this journey will be worth it.

Hi Julia!! I have been watching you for some time now, and as an almost-new graduate who is looking for a job in tech, your videos helped me a lot (and keeps helping -and calming me down-) Regarding the last question of the employers finding your chanel, a thought popped in my mind and I wanted to share it with you: your videos, both before and after you quit your job, help people like me who aren't really in the industry yet immensely on both how to get in and what is the process like, and how the working environment is like. So I feel like if the company you wanted to work for cares about all their employers, including the ones that arent with many experience, they can see that you are a gem for these people. I cant remember if you've taken a mentor role in your previous job, but you would be perfect for it. I can understand how it can be "bad", but there are also so many goods to it. So please dont be discouraged by it!! Hope you get the job of your dreams as soon as possible in the best way possible 💞💞

@16:04 Until your channel falls off? Let me tell you something... I really do think you have potential as a content creator. You're very articulate and have great communication skills. That right there is a superpower. Consider something else you might have a passion for, whether that is reviewing all types of tech gadgets (like marques brownlee, unbox therapy, linus tech tips), doing unique makeup and cosmetics unboxing reviews, reviewing food joints and showcasing local cuisines from around NYC and beyond like Mark Wiens, or even interviewing tech junkies and startups. All I am saying is you have potential as a content creator in anything you put your mind to, you have something unique about how you vlog and communicate your ideas. Hi Julia, searching a job is like walking in the darkest valley and i absolutely understand the hardness going through that. I am in a similar situation as you that i have been looking for job as a medical laboratory scientist for almost 2 years after graduated from university . During this period, i keep applying and most of them I didn’t have the chance to make it to the interview. So i value every interview that i got. Everything seems to be ok and i can see myself working there but of course i got rejected as they have found someone with more experience ( which is annoying because this is the reason i hear every time). I think you are courageous to share your ups and downs in front of people that you don’t know. I can’t express my feelings to my family and friends because I don’t want to spread negativity and have them worried. Tbh at this stage i am on my lowest self esteem . Somehow i just started not believing myself , not talking as much as i do normally and avoiding social gatherings. I used to be checking emails everyday and hope something turn up to me but now i have lost hope feeling worthless because i know i am going to get rejected with the same reason. Maybe you can tell by my poor writing that I don’t have English as my first language. And i keep using this reason to convince myself this is why i am still unemployed here in Australia. And i really wanna give up as I don’t think any employer would after someone with no experience and have English as their second language….. thank you for everyone precious time reading this, i hope you all do well.

Julia I love your finding a job series. As a future data scientist could u make a video that includes more interview questions/answers. I feel like I sometimes freeze and I start speaking like a 2nd grader during the interview process. Please and thank u

First half was a bit too drawn out and sponsored but the second half in the q&a was very inspiring and vulnerable. I appreciate your pov and wish you the best.

You mentioning that you are only wearing your shoes inside because you just cleaned them is so relatable as a fellow Asian lol.

Your RU-vid channel seems like it should be an overall positive to your data science career/job search. The RU-vid shows off your behavioral side much better than any interview can ascertain (which you should clearly pass). And so then, in interview, there's just the technical part and general fit parts left.

hi julia!!! have you thought of going the freelance data scientist route? from your interviews, it seems like you are making genuine connections, and since data science is your passion and you eventually want your own startup, why not try freelancing in that space?

It's a bad time to quit a job, the market is crap out there. There are jobs, but so many people have been laid off and all they're all applying too.

First of all best of luck! I was also in a same situation I quite my job without line up the another job due to burnout and in this economy it took me 7 months or technically 4 month because I wasn’t looking first three month actively. And I was also very particular about what exactly I wanted in my new job and God opened the door for me. It’s True delay makes us anxious and feel like to settle down for less but trust the process it will work. ❤

Running into the same problem 🫠Quit my corporate job before having something lined up because I put my family before my career. I’m in my 6th month of active job searching since my last day and it’s been rough. Especially since design is such a competitive field but I’m not giving up and I’m using this time for growth in my skills. I know there’s a fit out there for me just like anyone else. I’m not giving up hope!

The fact that companies are asking a DATA SCIENTIST a leet code question is just absurd. It is sad the interviewing landscape has not changed since I started my career in 2010.
