While at Iowa Lakes Community College I took a tour of their job site tool trailer. Since they just won all those tools in the One Million Subscriber Giveaway, they will need to do some modifications. It was cool to see how they designed their tool trailer and it gave me some ideas for my own trailer.
As a little bonus, the students and Corey (the Winner) showed off their tool belts and what they had in them.

My Dad did HVAC for 50 years and passed suddenly in September. When I went to his house I right away grabbed his 12 point buck and his personal tool pouch. Going through the old mans tools has been one of the hardest but most rewarding things of my life. Buy good stuff so you can pass it down.

I like the way they guys get to use their own judgment about their tool belts and their involvement with the trailer. I also like that they make adjustments when they see something that works for someone else that proves to be something of value

I read the entire Ryan's ru-vid.comUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan's Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan's Shed Plans.

@coreymenning
@coreymenning Год назад
We don't do any spec work Robert. All the houses we build are for someone. It helps in multiple ways. It keeps the college out of the financial aspect of it. It also allows the students work directly with the home owners to design the project. It also is great when the owners stop on site during the build as I have the students run those conversations so they help develop their soft skills.
@robertlaird6746
@robertlaird6746 Год назад
@@coreymenning It sounds like your contractors then and make money like a contractor does as well as the students tuition. I didn't go to a trades school and didn't know that there was a thing. I also didn't know about the union either till I had a few years under my belt. I started digging ditches and cleaning up trash on the job, showing up on time with a positive can do attitude, lunch packed, dressed properly, avoided making too many mistakes and worked my ass off to bring value to my employer so that he would say, I'll see you tomorrow. I started very young during high school in the summer time and then went full time. At 19 years old I purchased my first peace of raw land and also got a very used travel trailer for $350 that I parked on the property and lived in instead of paying rent. Then on the nights and weekends I designed and built my home debt free all by myself except for on concrete days. I sold that home and did it again and again. It was just my boss and myself building homes from the ground up so I was able to learn all trades. Every waking moment of the day I thought about construction. I had a burning passionate desire to learn it fully. I would often stay behind on the job after my boss left to check things out more clearly and try to learn. When I was 23, I went on my own. It's a great career and I think you live longer than someone that has a desk job.
@coreymenning
@coreymenning Год назад
@@robertlaird6746 that's awesome man! I wish we made money like a contractor. We get a small percentage of the cost of materials as a building fee. That helps pay for some of the field trips we take as well at tool maintenance or replacement. The main thing we get is valuable experience for our students. I built my own home at a young age as well. My dad was a contractor so I grew up around it and always loved it. To this day I'll run into people around town who tell me that my dad was the best in town and that I was fortunate to learn from the best! I love passing my passion on to my students! Nothing better!
@robertlaird6746
@robertlaird6746 Год назад
@@coreymenning My dad was also a contractor and did quality work. When you build for others, don't the customers pay the going rate and if so, than your school makes that money. It just seems like a profitable business is what I'm basically asking.
@coreymenning
@coreymenning Год назад
@@robertlaird6746 no they don't pay a labor rate. Right now the duplex we are building is owned and being financed by the Emmetsburg Community Development Corporation. They are acting as the general contractor. They will end up paying us a small fee that is a certain percentage of the materials cost. That's enough to cover our overhead. The main goal is the experience for my students.

Young Cole's belt is really something else. I've been tossing up what belt set up I should get next to replace my cheap chinese Taurus copy, was looking at a Milwaukee suspended setup, but I really like the idea of having quick release pouches so if you're working on a floor or doing flashings on a roof you can just set the bag down to the side and work on it without everything digging into your obliques. Can we get more details on what he has and where to buy them? Also he made the right choice with the Milwaukee 17oz hammer, they got it right with that one, the 19 and 22oz short handle hammers are balanced way wrong IMO, to the point I threw mine out the window into a culvert going down the highway and bought a 19oz Estwing long handle framer to replace it

During the 2008 great recession a lot of construction workers switched professions resulting in a mass worker shortage we experienced in the last 5 years. We will loose more this time around as construction workers are tired of being the sacrificial lamb when it comes to the economy. The government is thinking they are going to get a reset in home prices will be disappointed that their goal fails. During the last recession the housing market overbuilt the supply and was brought down buy the failure of sub prime mortgages. This time around there was a severe shortage of new homes and was only slowed by increased interest rates. The demand is still there but people are waiting it out for interest rates to fall or we get use to paying more interest on the loans. When the market turns the supply will already be behind the demand and will be built with less workers in the industry causing home prices to escalate even more than they did in the last couple of years. So all of this pain will be for nothing. I was a Framing contractor and a home builder for 40 years and it makes me extremely happy to see someone as yourself teaching and passing the torch to younger people. Keep up the good work.
