Trauma can create Empaths. You my friend have been through the same things I have, and after 47 years I found that I sense and attune to danger anytime I come into a room, I tend to absorb the emotions of those around me. I was informed that this isn't a good thing, as we tend to always be stuck in a loop of trying to identify risks to our safety while others walk in a room and just exist. Weird it manifested itself even in the same way, my right leg will constantly be "bopping' up and down, clearing my throat, or pulling out eyebrows. Most of the time I don't notice it until my wife tells me so I can stop myself. Sex and Substance addictions. Weight gain. Just now started to pull myself back due to podcasts like this. Thank you for this Mr. DeBlass. I always feel like I am the only one going through it, good to know stronger men than I also deal with these issues. Jocko I can't thank you enough for the knowledge and insights your show brings.

@joeaardvark9214
@joeaardvark9214 3 месяца назад
Deblass had exactly zero to do with Gordon's success. Gordon trained at Tom's school until he was like.... not even a blue belt. Same thing with Garry; he didn't become a name until he left Tom's and started training with Renzo in NYC.
@brisoler

@@joeaardvark9214 That makes sense. I didn’t think they were involved much. Just thought it was an interesting story about Gordon’s attitude early on as he came up through the belts
@joeaardvark9214
@joeaardvark9214 3 месяца назад
@@brisoler Gordon had a great attitude. He was very hungry and willing to do whatever it took to win. He followed Garry around everywhere and would pretty much only show up at Tom's school when there was a big seminar going on or something, which wasn't very often. But Deblass will 100% try to take credit for anything he can, and that's why he talks about Garry and Gordon the way he does.

witnessing addiction and the challenges of breaking the cycle of addiction in his family. 21:18 🌟 Tom DeBlass struggled with depression from a young age and coped with suicidal thoughts from childhood through his early twenties. 23:50 🤐 At age 7, Tom DeBlass experienced sexual molestation by another child, leading to emotional retreat and lasting guilt. 26:07 💔 The trauma from the molestation led to a period of emotional shutdown and a belief that he needed to become cold to protect himself. 27:14 🔄 Early exposure to sexuality and using it as a coping mechanism led to long-term struggles with associating sex with mental relief. 28:48 🌱 Tom DeBlass started leaning towards darkness, exploring Satanic ideologies, and delving into darker aspects of religion and spirituality in his teenage years. 31:00 🏅 Tom DeBlass excelled in sports during high school, showcasing impressive athleticism in track and field events despite personal challenges. 36:31 💥 Seeking physical pain, Tom DeBlass branded a cross on his shoulder at 16, believing it would connect him spiritually and toughen him mentally. 39:29 🥊 Tom DeBlass had a pivotal moment in high school, turning a physical altercation into a boxing match that affirmed his ability to stand up for himself, changing perceptions about him. 41:52 🥋 Tom DeBlass endured multiple injuries, including torn rotator cuffs, broken bones, and severe ligament tears, highlighting his perseverance. 43:55 🤼‍♂ DeBlass discovered his vulnerability during martial arts training, realizing he was a novice on the mats, which fueled his determination to learn and grow. 46:42 🥋 Training under Kurt Pellegrino and Ricardo Almeida shaped DeBlass's fighting career, emphasizing the humbling experience of realizing his limitations and learning from experienced mentors. 52:26 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 DeBlass faced the challenges of balancing his martial arts career and family life, experiencing the difficulties of co-parenting after a breakup while prioritizing his children's well-being. 55:40 🏆 Winning Jiu-Jitsu competitions like the No-Gi Worlds and Pans in different belt divisions marked DeBlass's dedication and success in the sport, leading to his participation in ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) trials. 57:58 🌍 Competing in ADCC 2009 in Barcelona provided DeBlass with an eye-opening experience, competing alongside his idols, representing his team, and encountering setbacks that influenced his return to MMA. 01:00:21 🥋 DeBlass faced a controversial decision in ADCC, feeling robbed of a victory due to a scoring error, which contributed to his decision to focus on MMA for a period. 01:01:27 🥋 Tom DeBlass reflects on Vinny Magalhaes' grappling abilities and experiences in competitions like ADCC, highlighting the caliber of athletes involved. 01:02:23 📚 DeBlass describes his intense training schedule, juggling teaching and multiple training sessions daily, acknowledging the struggle to balance teaching and competing at a high level. 01:04:29 🏫 Reflecting on being a teacher, DeBlass criticized the lack of care some educators had for their students and recognized the impact teachers could have on children's lives. 01:06:19 💭 DeBlass reveals his struggles with depression and loneliness, seeking help at a mental health facility during college due to alarming thoughts and feelings. 01:08:26 📖 He recounts a troubling phase where he contemplated harmful actions influenced by his mental state, almost resorting to drastic measures but ultimately seeking and receiving help. 01:11:45 🤔 Despite facing significant abuse in his past, DeBlass displays an unexpected lack of hatred towards those who wronged him, showcasing a complex and unresolved emotional conflict. 01:12:56 💡 After detachment from his past and a journey of self-discovery, DeBlass found success in understanding himself, highlighting the importance of personal growth over external competition. 01:17:21 🥋 DeBlass emphasizes the parallel between Jiu-Jitsu and life, advocating for a step-by-step, self-improvement-focused approach to find success in both. 01:18:54 😔 DeBlass opens up about his inner struggles, describing how despite experiencing success in his career, private despair persisted, leading to unhealthy coping mechanisms and suicidal thoughts. 01:20:30 🥋 Celebrating victories didn't drive Tom DeBlass; he trained to win rather than solely for the love of Jiu-Jitsu. Competing should be a consequence of the passion for the sport, not just chasing wins. 01:21:38 🏅 Winning wasn't enough for DeBlass; it was about teaching and helping others. He realized competition wasn't his sole source of happiness; teaching brought enduring joy. 01:22:21 🤼 DeBlass faced ADCC losses but acknowledged his mental shortcomings, embracing the notion that someone else succeeded where he couldn't. Acceptance and respect for others' achievements became key to his contentment. 01:23:32 🏫 Tom DeBlass found fulfillment in helping others grow through his association, priding himself on their development. His focus shifted from personal accolades to enabling others' success. 01:25:39 🤝 DeBlass learned that serving others made him happy, despite the external pressures and criticisms he faced. Understanding that others' happiness is their choice helped him navigate serving them better. 01:29:22 🥋 Gary Tonon found his exciting style under John, although DeBlass believes Gary might have won ADCC in a more methodical manner if he stayed under DeBlass's tutelage. 01:31:12 🌟 DeBlass experienced loneliness despite external success, attributing it to past experiences causing an incessant feeling of impending doom. He realized the importance of staying in the present and defining personal happiness. 01:36:28 🥊 DeBlass's transition to MMA, securing victories and titles, showcased his understanding that martial arts transcends sheer strength, emphasizing strategy, timing, and leveraging experience over raw power. 01:40:13 🥋 Technical skill vs. strength: Being technically sound is crucial, especially at the highest levels. Strength alone doesn't guarantee success; technique, relaxation, and efficiency matter significantly in combat sports. 01:41:08 🤼‍♂ Efficiency in fighting: Going at 100% without being efficient can be detrimental. Efficiency, strategy, and not letting strength cloud judgment are essential in combat sports. 01:42:33 🤺 Jiu-Jitsu match vs. fight: Drawing a distinction between a Jiu-Jitsu match and a fight is vital. The intensity and stakes differ significantly between the two, with distinct challenges. 01:43:13 🥋 Evolution of MMA: Early perceptions of fighting skills in MMA changed rapidly, with fighters quickly becoming well-rounded without glaring weaknesses by the mid-2000s. 01:44:40 🥊 Short-notice fight challenges: Accepting fights on short notice can present difficulties in preparation, affecting performance and confidence in the ring or cage. 01:49:26 🤕 Mental impact of loss: Losses in combat sports, even under challenging circumstances, can significantly affect an athlete's mental health, leading to scrutiny and unfair judgment. 01:53:11 📰 Handling criticism: Public figures, especially athletes, often deal with harsh comments. Learning to ignore or handle criticism is essential for mental well-being and focus. 01:54:09 💭 Coping with negative feedback: Understanding that criticisms sometimes contain a grain of truth is important. Learning not to take it personally is crucial for handling negativity. 01:56:12 👥 Impact of internet anonymity: Dealing with hateful comments fromanonymous sources can be frustrating. Understanding and not engaging with such negativity is a coping mechanism. 01:58:46 🧗‍♂ Resilience through experience: Suffering and overcoming adversity build resilience. Perspective gained through facing life-threatening situations minimizes the impact of trivial comments or hate. 01:59:00 🖥 DeBlass acknowledges negative comments online but sees them as reflections of unhappy individuals projecting their feelings. 01:59:57 🤔 Reflecting on social media behavior, DeBlass criticizes commenting negatively under fake names and emphasizes the need for diverse responses in different situations.

02:00:11 🥋 DeBlass shares a heartfelt story of advocating for a colleague to receive a belt promotion in jiu-jitsu. 02:02:31 🎓 Discussing his coach Ricardo Almeida, DeBlass praises his intellect, education, and choice to pursue Jiu-Jitsu over prestigious schooling in Brazil. 02:03:14 👥 DeBlass embraces multiple facets of his personality, emphasizing the need to adapt to different situations, highlighting his varied roles in life. 02:04:39 🥊 After facing defeats in MMA, DeBlass initially decides to quit due to disillusionment with the sport's demands and personal conflicts. 02:07:49 🥋 Transitioning back to jiu-jitsu, DeBlass finds solace, competes successfully in Bellator, and reflects on unique experiences during fights, showing empathy even in victory. 02:10:50 🚫 Feeling conflicted and recognizing signs, DeBlass decides to retire from MMA, realizing the toll it takes on personal life and mental well-being. 02:15:15 🤼‍♂ Reflecting on Gordon Ryan's growth, DeBlass acknowledges his potential and determination, foreseeing Ryan's rise in grappling, showcasing his competitive spirit. 02:17:50 🥊 Gordon Ryan, despite starting as a "little degenerate," possesses an unwavering determination, aiming for constant improvement, which has led to his dominance in Jiu-Jitsu. 02:18:43 🏆 Gordon Ryan's relentless pursuit of success and his unwillingness to settle, despite achieving greatness, contribute to his status as the best Grappler in history. 02:19:10 🏔 Gordon Ryan's ability to stay motivated even after reaching the top of his field, continuously pushing himself, is a rarity in any sport. 02:19:53 🤢 Despite health issues causing constant nausea, Gordon Ryan's dominance in Jiu-Jitsu remains unchallenged, with only a few competitors like Andre Galvao and Mason Fowler posing potential challenges. 02:20:48 🤼‍♂ Gordon Ryan's success is attributed more to his technique and mental fortitude than to any possible use of performance-enhancing drugs in a sport where supplementation is common. 02:23:48 🧠 Delegation and organizational skills significantly contributed to Tom DeBlass's academy's success, especially with the involvement of his girlfriend in running the business. 02:29:34 📚 Tom DeBlass found financial stability through instructional videos on BJJ Fanatics, a platform that offered him substantial income and residual benefits, something unusual in the Jiu-Jitsu world. 02:37:03 📈 Social media provides an opportunity for financial success in Jiu-Jitsu. Connecting with an audience drives sales, enabling athletes to make significant earnings. 02:37:30 💰 Jiu-Jitsu practitioners have the chance to make substantial money and become wealthy by leveraging social media, but success depends on their ability to connect and remain disciplined in their online presence. 02:38:12 📚 Authenticity matters: Learning from individuals on social media involves putting a face to the name and understanding their experiences to gauge the inspiration they offer. 02:40:04 💔 Heartfelt account of dealing with a loved one's illness during the COVID-19 pandemic, sharing the struggle of providing care and confronting mortality. 02:41:43 🥺 Emotional description of witnessing a father's decline in health, leading to a poignant final meeting and the enduring unintended consequences of the COVID transmission and the emotional burden of being involved in a loved one's passing. 02:52:09 🌟 Finding peace and transformation amid tragedy, acknowledging personal growth and positive changes that emerged from the loss of a loved one. 02:54:41 🌍 Nurturingchildren to be independent and prepared for the world while dealing with the fear of their potential pain, in the mentioned book. 02:57:01 🥋 Initiating support for bullied children through martial arts training, showcasing a commitment to helping others in the community. 02:57:41 🥋 Tom DeBlass sponsors kids who can't afford martial arts training, providing them with opportunities and highlighting their efforts, offering a sense of community and acceptance. 02:58:21 💔 DeBlass shares a heartbreaking story of a bullied teenager, emphasizing the importance of combating bullying and supporting victims to create a caring community. 02:59:28 🌟 Helping bullied kids extends beyond martial arts, empowering them to see life beyond school and bullies, fostering a supportive community that values and appreciates them. 03:00:39 🥋 DeBlass advocates Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) as a solution for kids facing various challenges like bullying, lack of confidence, or overconfidence, emphasizing its positive impact. 03:06:39 🤼‍♂ DeBlass arranged a wrestling match for a man with Down syndrome and Alzheimer's, creating a powerful and emotional experience, demonstrating the profound impact of small gestures. 03:08:32 🥋 Ocean County BJJ offers an affiliate program allowing schools to align with DeBlass' methodology while providing support, guidance, and shared resources without strict requirements. 03:09:42 🤝 DeBlass selects affiliates based on values, assessing their reasons for practicing Jiu-Jitsu, lineage, and reasons for changing schools, ensuring a conducive learning environment. 03:13:41 📣 Apart from teaching, DeBlass announces for 1 FC and grappling matches, showcasing diverse talents and being actively engaged in promoting the sport. 03:14:48 🌐 To connect or inquire about affiliation, individuals can contact Tom DeBlass directly via email, highlighting accessibility and readiness to engage with the community. 03:15:15 🌐 Tom DeBlass experienced significant online negativity during the pandemic, leading to a drastic decrease in reach and faced personal attacks, which affected his online presence. 03:15:57 🛡 DeBlass previously engaged heavily with negative online comments, even resorting to extreme actions like doxing individuals who wronged him, but he now refrains from such activities. 03:17:19 🤼‍♂ Doxing, the act of revealing someone's personal information online as a form of retaliation, is considered a severe breach of privacy and a violation, bringing virtual conflicts into the real world. 03:18:01 🧠 DeBlass shifted his approach from engaging with negative comments to a more balanced response, offering dialogue or a meeting instead of escalating conflicts online. 03:19:25 🌐 DeBlass's frustration with negativeonline behavior stems from the realization that most interactions online lack genuine personal connection, enabling him to detach emotionally from such comments. 03:21:33 🏅 DeBlass values work ethic and self-improvement, finding it challenging to respect individuals who avoid responsibility, lack accountability, or don't strive to reach their potential. 03:22:01 🏃‍♂ He emphasizes facing mistakes, learning from failures, and choosing growth over avoidance, citing instances where individuals either evade problems or rise above them. 03:23:09 🤝 DeBlass expresses genuine intentions to help others despite past conflicts, encouraging people to acknowledge his imperfections while embracing his willingness to assist anyone in need. 03:24:20 🥋 DeBlass's impactful actions, especially helping a bullied kid embrace Jiu-Jitsu and participate in tournaments, highlight the transformative potential of martial arts in overcoming adversity. 03:27:53 💪 Jocko Willink announces the "DEA Reset," a program aimed at promoting discipline, fitness, and personal growth, involving workouts, leadership guidance, and clean energy supplements through Joof Fuel. 03:32:12 🇺🇸 Origin USA emphasizes its American-made products, promoting a range of gear, including martial arts apparel, while maintaining ethical manufacturing practices. 03:33:10 👕 Jocko Store offers "The Shirt Locker" subscription featuring unique monthly designs, catering to those seeking exclusive and outside-the-box shirt designs for enthusiasts. Underground, a subscription-based service at $8 a month, grants access to exclusive content; those unable to afford it can email for assistance to join the community. 03:34:33 📚 Recommends Tom DeBlass's book "How to Beat the Streets," and Jocko's authored books, particularly emphasizing the impact of the "Way of the Warrior Kid" series in transforming kids' lives. 03:34:58 🔍 Mentions Echelon Front's leadership consultancy and their online training platform, emphasizing the importance of leadership skills in various aspects of life, comparing it to the advantage of knowing Jiu-Jitsu. 03:35:40 🌟 Highlights the significance of training and preparation in life, drawing a parallel between the advantage of Jiu-Jitsu on the mats and the advantage of life skills and leadership in life's challenges. 03:35:53 🇺🇸 Encourages support for charitable organizations benefiting service members: America's Mighty Warriors, Heroes and Horses by Mark Lee, and Beyond the Brotherhood by Jimmy May. Also mentions Tom DeBlass's organization, Buddies Over Bullies.

Hey Jocko, not sure if this is where you pull your questions from but I hope this one will be intriguing. I believe myself to be decently humble. I avoid letting myself think I know or am better than anybody, even those that the average person might look down on. I try to take the time to think of how easily I could be in anybody else’s shoes, not only those worse off than me but to realize they made as bad of decisions as I have considering my full potential and how abysmally I am wasting it compared to others who’ve made much smarter and more disciplined choices. The way my ego makes me look on those less fortunate than me I realize I am exactly that same image compared to those who let themselves make fewer excuses than I did. With all this said about what I hope is a wise realization, I can’t escape the trauma I’ve grown up with. Particularly, trauma that told me I dare not assume I have any value or worth especially not more than another person; even the act of comparing myself to others alone felt like a mortal sin of pride. How can I gauge if and when my mind and behavior are truly rooted in a healthy humility Vs an unhealthy humiliation? How do I get humility right? And how does one build a confidence about their humility such that they can pull wisdom from it considering that confidence and humility feel like such polar opposites? How can one navigate and engage with these concepts with the least collateral damage?

I think the reason Tom does not feel any resentment towards his molester is a form of self preservation. Whether he realises it or not, he has too strong of a moral compass to not let hate consume him. He says he was too much of a coward to kill himself, but I think his moral compass did not allow it. Hate is like fire, it can ve a motivator, just like you woulc warm your house with it, but it can raze entire cities down to the ground.

@@onlycasual1 I’m not “pro-bully” by any means, it’s just a fascinating topic. You can search the number of famous people who were bullied and see how that interaction changed the course of their lives. From Tom Cruise to Elon Musk, the list is impressive. Maybe the right approach isn’t to try to “stop bullying” but teach kids how to use adversity as a springboard for success? Im not a fan of the societal practices that seem to coddle kids and protect them from facing any sort of hardship. It’s the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality. I don’t think it’s healthy.

@@vwr32jeep Kids need hardship and adversity but in a controlled way. That's what sports, the arts, part time jobs and any other number of difficult yet constructive activities are for. Kids are not equipped with the life experience and general intrinsic concepts about themselves and the world that adults take for granted when it comes to being bullied. Hell, there are plenty of adults that get bullied at the workplace or even within their own "friend group" and they STILL don't have the capacity to overcome that "adversity". Expecting it from kids is not reasonable as they don't yet have the capability in most cases to apply logical reasoning to a situation that is making them feel godawful. For every Tom Cruise and Elon Musk there are a thousand broken people that didn't make it.
