@@pjnugent8198 Yep. Sports change. "The press" and "Xg" in football. I do love the camera angles and slo-mos now though. But they'll never be players with the charisma of Eric and Jocky again
It cannot be denied that the standard of the top players is higher now but I still regard this as the golden era for darts : these two, Lowe, Rees, George, Deller et al from Jollees Club and then Lakeside. Passionate but respectful and knowledgeable crowds, descending into reverential hush while the players threw.
I will explain further (although you would have to have been there to see this). Back in the early days of TV (60s, 70s, early 80s) you got the impression that ordinary people who made good were there; they looked ordinary; had ordinary looks; ordinary teeth..... Ironically (until the mid 1990s), they dressed smartly for their TV appearance.. Today, television has become more staged and false. As Danny Baker said: quote: "in the late 1980s Top of the pops no longer looked like it was made by us, for us" And he was right. Look at football - it is now a huge business and the stars are a million miles away from the fans. The magic has been lost though. The dream of local lads making the big team is just that - a dream. There is a loss of believability in TV now. Even people who go on a game show have their teeth done. Ironically most of them (the men usually) dress like scruffs. The golden age of television is well and truly over - which is why I have now cancelled my TV licence. It's a waste of time and money in my opinion. There are too many adverts and BBC is a patronising, dumbed-down load of rubbish.
Cracking game from 2 class players. Jockey bursting with respect for Eric. Two greats sadly now gone. Jockey and Eric legends of the world darts. R.I.P CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD.
Jocky had a bad run in towards the end of his life broke and very sick ,I remember this match I was twelve years old 2 of the best characters to ever grace the game ,snd the passing of Eric what a shock rip both of you
Jocky i recall back in 1986 when both he and i in a lounge in Scotland throwing just both together and no one else in the lounge at that time and on oche both throwing he said few things to me which were nice and fun also i wont mention here ..But i asked him how he got along with Eric Bristow in which he replied ..Fine that he liked Eric and it was just on oche alike a Scotland v England thing and both tried to win but away from oche had fun and banter and got along well together . Was yrs later Eric was at Jockys funeral in Kirkcaldy in Fife ..Sadly Eric died some time later . Both Giants of the game and we wont see their likes again but always shall be remembered .
Jocky, what a character you were. You wil be remembered for your snatchy way of throwing, for the grin on your face, for the fantastic time the crowd had with you. You may not be alive anymore, but I can assure you that you will be remembered forever and always. RIP Jocky Wilson.
The golden era of darts. I remember at the time when I was a nipper I always wanted Bristow to lose v Jockey. Now I realise that the crafty cockney is a gentleman and a very kind man at heart. Darts seems to have lost it's innocence now that money has corrupted it. I can always say I witnessed the sport at it's best.
I remember watching it live when I was a lot younger. 5-0 seemed done and dusted but fair play to Eric what a comeback. Jumped out of my seat when the double 10 went in! RIP Jocky pure Scottish legend!
one of the best for sure.... and take notice how humble and gracious and giving he is at 2:30 through 2:40 Making sure Eric got some respect. Don't see much of that anymore.. RIP JW
I've been really saddened by Jockys death, I agree, he was the darts equalivilient of George Best & Alex Higgins. I hope even in his later reclusive years he knew how loved he was, even by us English :) I hope he gets a great send off. R.I.P Jocky, theres none like you anymore, and the worlds a poorer place for it.
Jocky, you are a legend and you'll be sadly missed. Desperately sad you couldn't see your public before the end. We all love you and miss you Jocky. God bless wee man..........
Eric and Jocky had far more character than a lot of todays players. It's a pity that darts fans today have to put up with cry babies like Mervyn King and Ted Hankey. I know Eric and Jocky had a moan from time to time, but they had character and personality. Mervyn and Ted have less character and personality than a dead goldfish.
These guys were incredible athletes at their peak fitness, their dedication to their training was incredible, 10 pints a night, 40 fags and a curry on the way home. To maintain such discipline over their careers must have taken iron willpower 🤗
Sad just been reading a story about Jocky did you know he had lost all his teeth by the time he was 28, and had a nick name gumy i thought i was bad. He bought a new set of dentures that cost him £1.200.00 but he said they made him belch. check out jocky,s story from the guardian funny but very sad.
All the thoughts below can be summarised thus: Modern times are sanitised and boring - back in the '70's and 80's life (and sport) was REAL. R.I.P. real life....
We had Jocky come to our local in Fareham over 25 years ago and what a star, plus we had an opportunity to play one leg of 701 against him. I still have the photo taken on the night. Great memories, great player, sadly no longer with us.
These two guy were good in their eras which is fine. But they wouldnt stand a chance in this era of darts. There are so many top players from all over the world better than them. Just my opinion.
