The fact that she turned her life around doesn't mean much to the people she affected by doing this in the first place. What if they never recover from the damage she caused by being a liar and a straight up con artist. You don't just recover from identity fraud. It takes years to straighten out, and that's if you ever do get it fixed. Got her life straight? Ok, now help straighten out and make right what you caused.

That just says to the nation go out and commit as much crime as you like. Yeah you might get caught and be inconvenienced for the short prison sentence you will get, but it will be financially worth it in the end. I thought the British judicial system was a joke but the Australian one is even worse. There's lots of ways to access SSNs. As an educator, I had access to literally hundreds of children's birth certificates and SSNs. I could have stolen any that I pleased, held on to them for several years, and then created all sorts of fake IDs. About 15 years ago, when I accessed my safety deposit box at my bank, in the vault, in plain site, within reach were dozens of manila account folders. Without touching the folders, I could see identifying information printed on the tabs of the folders. I could have gleaned tons of information. (The records are no longer there). Anyone who works in the records department of doctor's offices or hospitals have access to full names, addresses, birthdates and SSNs. There. That's three ways, right off the top of my head. Others who have easy access to multiple social security numbers include: receptionists in doctors' offices; online customer service agents for banks; insurance agents; and agents who complete car registrations and photo ID services. As a person cleaning warehouses and office spaces I had easy access to thousands of social security numbers. Secretaries and managers would leave paystubs and other documents right out in full view. In the very recent past, I have cleaned office spaces with unlocked file cabinets containing thousands of customer files, all printed with social security numbers, birth dates, and addresses. In general, total lock down of physical and computer files just makes management of a business or agency too cumbersome. To a certain extent, we must go on trusting each other and hoping for the best. On the up side, we share our birth information and social security numbers all over the place, providing access to thousands of people in a year, with generally positive results. Most people with access show respect for what amounts to an honor system for receipt of information. We should all just watch out for online and telephone schemers who are pretending to belong in some legitimate category. There are red flags to watch for. For example, legitimate staffers will not ever initiate telephone or online requests for Social Security Numbers. Legit staffer will already be looking at this information, in response to a call from a consumer. Consumers of banking and other services need to be aware of certain red flags. Real bank employee will not initiate a call and then ask for a social security number. He or she should already know, and should be guarding this information.

@@synthiamcbride7194 Our provincial insurance agency demands you keep you registration original in your glove box. AND mechanic has access to your Drivers Lic. number, correct address, and my backyard guy hooked up cable and ran 100's of dollars on me when I was living in a completely different city, hadn't every lived at the hook up address, and it banged my credit rating. Took me a few years to sort it out.

I wish people would stop using traumatic experiences as an excuse for criminal behaviour. Millions of survivors go on to live law abiding lives (myself included!) Why can’t people just see that there are just “wrong ens” in the world and leave it at that. 😡

The bit at 17:12 ish, "she knew I had a young family?" - I'm sorry this happened to you but she's already stolen $10,000 do you think she cares what your bills are? Yes, it's incomprehensible that someone wants to do that but you can't think of them having a conscience. Too bad the bank didn't have stricter protocols for safety, especially since it's happened once.

There is nothing more insidious than identity theft. A couple of years ago this happened to me and I felt as if I had been physically violated. I never discovered who had been responsible but if I had I would have done something bad to them (those thoughts circulated in my head for weeks until I could claim “myself” back again). The victims featured here have every ounce of my sympathy..

While alot of disadvantaged people do not end up offending, a large part of people in prison have come from experiences like hers. Most normal people don't offend, but those who do usually have an illness or come from a broken past. Shouldn't we as a community help the victims and put measures in place to support people who could offend?

So...average person makes, let's say $35k/year, times 4 years that's $140k. All you have to do is rip off more than that per year, hide it, and try not to get caught, or have the crimes associated to you and it could make doing these non-violent crimes very much worth doing if you look at it all as a time investment. Good on yah Court System! You've just given the formula for success to people that don't care about jail terms.
