T-Boz of TLC cited Watley's song "Still a Thrill" as an example setting her vocal tone for her singing career. In a personal video, she sent to Watley (and was given permission to share on her RU-vid channel) T-Boz thanked Watley for this song during her teenage years citing she was "hitting them notes"
Whether a lot of female artist are conscious of it or not Jody Watley is definitely the one. Rihanna, Beyonce , Jody is definitely a music, video, fashion Icon. Pioneer, especially for black female artist. She should be given her props.
Several visual elements of this underrated and underappreciated 1987 video preceded two iconic videos of the time: 1. It featured voguing before Madonna's "Vogue" (1990). 2. The industrial scenes in this video came before the industrial setting of Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" (1989). 3. All three videos were in black and white.
Just found out Tyrone Proctor (the man in this video) passed away today. He was one of her fellow Soul Train dancers and I believe he choreographed this video. This was always one of my favorites. RIP and condolences to his family.
He did - Rest In Peace Tyrone The Bone. 🙏🏽🕊 I wrote a tribute blog on my website jodywatley.net l There’s no choreography in the video - we made it up as we went along - and all of my scenes I did what I felt - montage was the same, no rehearsal - just roll camera! Much love ❤️
Not sure why this wasn't as big as some of her other singles. I think this is the best one. A nice, funky jam and she sounds good singing in a lower register.
While the likes of Janet Jackson, Madonna , and Whitney Houston was battling it out as who the Queen of the 1980's, this Super Diva was carving her niche as a powerhouse vocalist and dancer and pop sensation! This is my favorite video of Jody Watley. Did you notice....Jody was voging way before Madonna. And, in black and white!
What makes Jody Watley a UNIQUE Diva is because we WATCHED her grow from dancing on Soul Train as a young girl and later a young woman, perform in Shalamar, and EXPLODE as a solo artist. She has always had great songs NO FILLERS in sight. Watley is a Living Legend. @jodywatley
@Ramon Hart Yaaaassss, hunty! Jody was a BAD B1TCH! She didn't really get the credit she deserved. She was no Aretha or Patti vocally, but her music and production quality was ON POINT for a Pop Artist. She drew a lot of comparisons to Janet at the time, with that wet n wavy weave, but i actually think Jody was a better NATURAL dancer and mover than Janet. Janet was bad, but all of stuff had to be elaborately choreographed. Jody could be in a video or on stage movin all by herself.
Jody is that 'catwalk' in her style and just down right has groove thang that not many have.....she's one to explore what one can 'get' from her energy ✨️. She's a beast & the whole package...❤ 🙌🏽♍️🙌🏿♈️🎶🎊💋
OMG Ms Jody is definitely a force to be reckoned with no doubt about it ❤💃🕺💃🎊🤗💋😋This video gives me all the life I need 💕💖😍🥵🥰.Soooooo 🔥 🥵 OUCH ‼️She so beautiful very sexy and classy .2023 This awesome song is STILL A THRILL 🥵♾️💋🎊💃👯♀️🪄🎊✨️
This song came out right when i graduated from high school, it was like my anthem when i was on my way to the club or just to go hang out, good times👍👍🏿☺️
This is one of the few people in the world who can make Paris look even MORE elegant and edgy at the same time. It is like Garnier designed that building waiting for her arrival.
6/6/2020 Rest easy, Tyrone “The Bone” Proctor. A dance/choreography legend and former Soul Train dancer. Jody and Tyrone have been good friends for decades. Most often on Soul Train, when you saw Jody & Jeffrey (Daniel), you also saw Tyrone and his regular partner, Sharon Hill (Woods) not far away. Jody featured Tyrone in this video where they beautifully demonstrated the marriage of locking and waacking throughout their choreography.❤️💫✨ For those who think they are voguing: this style of dance is called waacking. Waack dancing has been going on at least since the early 1970s. If you go back and watch those 70s clips of Soul Train, especially during the mid-late 70s, you will see Tyrone, Sharon, Jeffrey, and Jody used to mix waack dancing in with several other moves. Also, just want to mention that Tyrone once stated that Waack was a west coast dance mostly performed to Disco/R&B type of music; whereas Vogue was an east coast dance mostly performed to House music.
I love this video too. The beat is everything .She danced on those steps without missing a beat. LOVE her black leather jacket I would rock that today and that chain belt ..Go head Jody!
....Miss Watley....I must make a confession RIGHT here....THIS song, AND, this Video...wrecked my NERVES, my well BEING, my financial STATUS, my sexuality, my teeth....ALL of IT!! ..ha-HAA!! (cont.) ....I was already a HUGE Jody fan, even BEFORE 'Looking For...', BUT, when the single dropped, May '87, (I already had the debut album), the stark B&W picture sleeve photo made me say, 'I can't wait for the video...' ..oh, NO....I saw it on Ralph McDaniel's 'Video Music Box' : The waaacking. the Hair. the LOCALE. the petticoat. the BOOTS. the Earrings.the 'back in color' ending. the STAIRCASE. the Male partner, matching her EVERY move. the 12" Remix. the POSES. and most of all, the EXTENDED version VIDEO; remember kids, NO ONE was doing THIS, at the time; Jody was SO forward thinking, in terms of product for her Club / Dance fans, and, her stylized image; Janet Jackson had 'The Pleasure Principle' video, around the SAME TIME, and these here Two girls, were THE ONES. they were..THE. ONES!!! ...after Jody's Video, EVERYBODY was shooting videos in Paris (even Biz Markie!) ..and even though Madonna was asking, 'Who's That Girl?' at the time, Jody was the one making those MOVES. Time has revealed who the REAL INNOVATOR was, and, I couldn't be more pleased that Jody FINALLY gets acknowledgement for the choices she made with her career, & her STYLE; Sometimes, it's best to be RESPECTED, than REVERED.....and, YES girl, you're STILL a THRILL.....
A DJ should take this song, Prince's "Kiss", Lillo Thomas' "Sexy Girl", and Jermaine Stewart's "Jody", and put them in a mix! They all have that Minneapolis sound (and all came out within a year or so from each other)! Love it.
I will say... At the time in 1987, there was Janet, Whitney, Madonna, but Jody Watley had a style & sound all of her own that was so soulful & different. Her look was so new & unique, all her own! I love Miss Jody, Spring 1987-Spring 1988 this album was rockin'.
Simply awesome, how could you not like this song?, love how deep and rich her voice is in this one, nearly 30 years later and it still sounds great, a fierce woman.
Oh come on! Why do people do this, especially older people? It's as if most of you have selective memory about the past in order to discredit others with these backhanded compliments. I was a die-hard Jody Watley fan as a kid. She wore piercings, wore many wigs, extensions, and weaves and had tattoos. And yes, she was awesome and gorgeous. Still is.
This video ugg...all these years later I still get chills...Jody is a moving piece of fine art.... the cinematography is breath taking never saw a video even come close to this...in my 49 years on this earth.....gurl it's still very much a thrill 😉
Big hair, big forehead and big earrings. I wanted to be her sooo bad in the 80's!! Dancing up and down those stairs without looking I would've tumbled all the way the hell down!! You go Ms. Watley
Red dress is by Jean Paul Gaultier. Amazing designer she wore a lot in her videos (the red crop bomber with the studded sleeves in Don't You Want Me and the oversized black men's blazer in Real Love are his too....)
Wow! Andre Cymone was killing that guitar! That is pure Minneapolis sound as it gets when it comes to guitar. Prince and Jesse Johnson have that same or similar rythm technique when it comes to washing them dishes on guitar. 💜
Still one of my favorite artists…love this artsy video! Jody danced, sang and modeled! Love how the video transformed from black and white to color at the end! Almost 36 years ago! And because of her I still rock my big sterling silver hoop earrings! ❤
Whenever I'm done with a situation and I'm feeling shady, I say, "I'm going home now. Where are my keys?" Thank you, Jody. Thank you, Tyrone "The Bone" Proctor. It's been a long time, but it's STILL A THRILL! RIP TY!
One of the best individual performance music videos, along with Knock on Wood by Amiiee Steward. People forget about how great of a dancer Jody was (and her beauty). This album was a precursor to Janet Jackson's Rythm Nation, speaking to women's empowerment. This should have 100 millions views!
Iconic artistic video and yes one of the best ever. This preceded Rhythm Nation but came after Control 1986 which was Janet Jackson's early statement on women's self-determination and her own empowerment.
It was a huge on the R&B charts since it peaked at #2. As far as pop/crossover, it was far less successful. It stalled at #56. I actually remember hearing this song quite often on R&B radio back in '87.
My favorite song and video from her debut. Funky rhythm, sultry singing, fantastic dancing, lots of attitude, and beautifully shot. I remember when I was young playing this song over and over while imitating the dance moves.
