Just so you know, this is still being enjoyed to bits in 2020. You and Joe should really do a podcast together, that would make for some great content, I could listen to you guys talk about those modules all day. Thanks from Belgium !
I got to tell you Warren, your videos, have become an everyday morning habit along with my coffee... keep those videos coming..!!! Great video with Joe Baresi, very inspiring!!! Got to go and try out some stuff that came to my mind while watching the video... Thank you!!! All the best greetings from Greece!!!
Hi +Tassos Ioannidis Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! I love Greece and the coffee there is fantastic! So happy to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi +Carl Anderson Aw shucks!!! YOU ROCK!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
when you guys are talking about the spectrasonics 610 I realized what Joe does with his is similar to what Andrew Scheps did with his setup, going into a transient designer then to the comp top get more length out of the snare...Great minds think alike! I very much dig both of those guys...good stuff!!
Shane I think Tom lord algae demonstrated a similar trick in the Mix with the Masters Namm 2018 video. He used a transit designer plug-in that was previously a hardware piece and cut off the front of the snare, another words very slow attack, and increased the sustain fully. Then he ran it through a compressor. And blended it back with the original snare track. He called it the “ping” snare sound.
Hi Warren! Thanks for another great video! Pete Townshend used to run his 1066 loaded BCM 10 into two LA-3As. I personally think the LA-3A is excellent, especially on the mix bus. Pete Townshend is also a fan of the LA-4A. I must concur regarding the Waves Helios and PYE emulations. (Waves Eddie Kramer Tape, Tubes & Transistors.)
Hi +67Stu Great stuff! Yes I love the LA 3A, I'm actually using one as I type on a Classical guitar with Greg Suran! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
When you guys were geeking out about Peavey it reminded me that Peavey used to manufacture a tube mic pre in the late 90s. Have you ever tried it? My buddy used to say they were the best unknown mid pres.
Hi +Dean Kobayashi Thanks for the great comment! No I didn't know about that mic pre! I will have to look for it! Has anyone else tried it? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro ... Mic PRE... Although I think that Peavey does make some inexpensive mics too... But I was thinking of the pre. I think it's the VMP2.
The point when you realize you're hooked. You come to RU-vid just for a few minutes to check if there's by any chance something interesting to see before you go to bed. An hour later you catch yourself having watched an entire episode of Produce Like a Pro. And you didn't even want to watch it because you were tired. Hooked I tell you. :)
Hello Warren, What an amazing tour this one is! I am over here drooling over all that wonderful gear!!! WOW! Hey you mention a couple times about a studio in Indiana. Just curious if you can share what studio it was? I live in Indiana and have done some recoding at a couple of studios and was wondering if its one I know of. Thanks mate!
OMG! This was such an educational video! Thanks Warren! What a privilege it is to hang with the studio pros who have made producing what it is. Joe is such an encyclopedia of the craft. What an incredible gear collection. I cannot thank you enough for sharing this info. And as an added bonus, this video completely cured my guilt over my own gear collection (lol)!
Oh come on. I was waiting for the guitar amp tour the entire video. "We could talk about the amp collection for years" and boom: jump cut to the outro. I'm in tears :D
This might be the best episode of produce like a pro! I've watched it 3 times! haha. Also, I can't wait for the next episode at Joe's studio. Thanks Warren!
Between this episode and Hybrid Studio episodes you're really out-doing yourself lately. Absolutely fantastic! BTW: NHT = 'Now Hear This' a great company focused on maximum price/performance ratio, great gear for the most part. Joe is so soft spoken, usually a sign of bombastic sonics creeping into the framework somehow, can't contain those devils, they'll crop up somewhere...lol...
Hey, I know it very much later but I'd love to see you get back to Joe's. Watched his 10 questions and 10 favorite pedals videos with Dave Pensado. Good stuff.
32:45 Joe's dry sense of humour cracks me up. I love coming back to this video from time to time and randomly picking a part to watch, I always walk away learning something. Thanks Warren!
Just re-watched this for the 10th time, I think I know most of it by heart..We need some new stuff from this corner of the world! Would really be great to re-visit Joe in his HOC studio, especially after his latest sonic masterpiece, namely Tool's Fear Inoculum
I now 100 percent know I am a Pro Music Producer and Songwriter and a wanna be Recording Engineer. I will never ever ever ever be that smart! What I need to do is partner up with a really talented recording engineer that can do and learn all that crazy real recording stuff. Thank you God for pro tools and all music related software! In the box roles!!!
Such casual Guinness. I say that with great admiration. Creating unique effects and sounds in the real world and the way they are captured to make music are all a creative perspective. The way it's always been. Down right philosophical.
Woah, that was insane! What I liked the most is near the end when he explains that he spent a ton of time just recording with small increments variations of everything just to have a reference centre afterward to help people choose options cuz the entire time I was wondering, how the fuck can one not get lost in all of this. I'm not at the level of buying any of this but it's good to know about for future reference. I actually almost bought a FMR RNP, I was surprised to see that in there. So far I have a ISA One that I use a lot of almost everything I do combined with my RME fireface 800.
Hi +CarcPazu Haha it's A LOT of gear!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I love pedals the are NOT true bypass :-) I want it to change the sound, otherwise, why use it??? I use a Big Muff permanently on with my Strat, but use the volume to control all the sound/colour.
Hi +Richard James Haha if it works and sounds amazing then great!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Who would have thought that a metal rack, with a metal case, with more metal things inside it, that we plug a metal jack into, and plug a metal mic and play things made of metal would be so dammmmnnn fuckn cooooool! additive metal stuff
Stephen Desper who invented the Desper Spatializer , engineered The Beach Boys Sunflower and Surfs Up album. He’s a fabulous talent, and a very kind man. One of the greatest engineers of all time .
Funny when Joe said "It's my studio". The setup including the window very much resembles your studio. That outboard wall is just in less order than your studio, or though his armrests are in better condition ;) Just kidding, great channel Warren!!
Ummm.... my brain shut down five minutes in. I wish I were a fly on the wall during the TOOL sessions. I love his recording/mixing philosophy. Thanks for sharing this Warren, Joe.
This is so good. I've been binge watching everything... It pushes me to try new things, to dare to make mistakes, and do things in a different way. I've been out of the recording and production loop for a while and last week I just set everything up next to me, and already started recording stuff for a few friends, enjoying it so much more than before, focusing on creativity instead of following trends. You guys are really sending a great message to all of us, so I want to thank you. I'm a big fan of yours, keep it up.
Hi Warren. Just tucking into this video. Marvellous ;) Producer Bob Marlette and I mixed Tony Iommi's solo record "Fused" on this console back in 2003 over Xmas and New Year. A great fun time and another chapter in my, so far, awesomely fun career. Keep up the videos my friend - they are fun to watch and learn from :) All the best Mike
HI +Mike Exeter That's fantastic!! I love Tony Iommi, one of my favourite guitarist and Bob is a great guy!! Thanks for stopping by and saying hi! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
haha, Warren, this was a great one mate! this is my kind of recording i do daily - it Really hit home with me & the philosophy of exploring new ways to capture the sounds, or, alternatively, how to produce different sonic footprints. This is the essence of music recording as an art form. marrying that with technique gives endless hours of work, and creativity . RAGE man.
Hi +Daniel Lynch Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! YES!!! Agreed 100000%% Thanks very much! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Whats wonderful about what you're doing is that this is SOOO entertaining and informative for today. But, really, in many years time, when the "new" group of 40 yr old "Old Guys" (who are 10 yrs old today) go searching for what the guys back in the day used to do and what gear they used they are gonna find this treasure trove of videos from you. You have so much QUALITY material you could make a serious documentary with all your stuff. So cool.
Cool video man! I'm going to test my new Heil PR20 with a Golden Audio Project 1073 preamp next week on rock guitars, I already know it's going to be a blast. Btw, it would be cool if you had an interview or something with Steven Slate! Thanks for your work, you're so enthusiastic that it's contagious :D
Hi +Smappa Great!! I expect it will sound great!! I will definitely have to find time to interview Steven! Have a marvellous time recording many thanks Warren
Hey Warren - heres just an idea- but i keep googling the price of all this gear - what would be awesome is if you put little rough price tags next to your gear name's at the bottom of the screen - i bet people would love to know the general price tag - the price on some of these blows me away lol
Hi +Vomiting Christ Yes some of these pieces he bought at incredible prices and they've appreciated in value dramatically! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I grew up listening to AR18s! I still have them. I love those speakers. Speaking of some fun old hi fi gear for the control room, I have my dad's old dbx 119s that are warm and musical. Being a desperate poor indie, I also absconded my dad's SAE power amps and JBL 4311s - that is what I use to mix. Another great video, Warren, thanks!
Hi +Frederick Thorne Fantastic stuff!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Yes those AR18's are going to start rocketing in value! haha Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren, I'm totally hooked with your great videos mate... Joe is so cool and resourceful.. I like how he thinks...! Now I have to take care of my girl she's getting jealous of you, lol
Joe is so inspirational! And i love seeing the both of u guys talk about all these fantastic pieces of equipment. Just so much love, passion, knowledge and excitement. Thank u so much for this video!!
the Laney supergroup was also the amp that Paul Kossof from free used - not a lot of people know that! Partridge transformers..... like a really good marshall! but with mor clean headroom!
Hi +Carl Anderson Yes I'm sure he definitely used various Valve/Tube Amps, but I love the Laney! Amazing Amp!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Brilliant video, as usual. Thanks Warren! I'd be interested in Joe's workflow: how does he integrate such a massive collection of hardware into his console-oriented mixing process without it becoming over-complicated?
Hi +Skinny P Yes we have to interview Joe again!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Amazing wall of gear...and talking about sharing crazy tricks with low tech gear back in the dawn of EDM I used to run drums loops trough a Ibanez DM500 Digital delay. The box itself I believe was designed for guitar purposes, but the beauty of it is that it had reverse delay and modulation, thus being able to create some insane drums effects with it. Here's a link to the unit www.dancetech.com/item.cfm?threadid=4331 I believe you can get one now for $30 or so lol
Seems to be a lot transformer theory in music these days. It's either scales and rudiments or melodyne and edited to the grid. Besides the fact that no "professional" musicians would ever jam with me...lol, but I find that ones with less technical skills leave more space for something original or creative. They think more about what they want it to sound like than anything technical.
Hi +Rabi Ben Lavi Thanks for your insight! I would agree, but I would add the ones that rely on their technique, as I'm currently working with Sean Hurley, Blair Sinta and Greg Suran at Sunset Sound and they are playing simple great parts! Have a marvellous time recording many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro To clarify, I was saying the way people are learning these days is fine if you're going to be in the symphony or marching band where everyone has to play the same. Or if you're just going to do covers and copy other's technique.
Hi +Rabi Ben Lavi Ok I completely understand! Yes it's up to players to discover unique ways to create innovative approaches! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, again - thank you for nice video! I have seen another video with Joe (from McDSP stand) where he was mention that channel G is his favourite plugin from McDSP.... I was wondering - what do you think is sound more close to original in terms of emulating SSL console - McDSP or Softube Chanel 1 ???Thank you, Andrii.
Hi +Andrii Grybovskyi Hmm great question! I have never tried to compare the plugins directly to my SSL! I love the McDSP, like Joe I've aways been a fan of the company and their plugins! I've recently discovered Softube and I have to say they do make great plugins as well! I will have to try a comparison, however my gut I will like both for different applications I'm pretty sure! Have a marvellous time recording many thanks Warren
How do you guys feel about making something sound old in between subtle to noticeable way like a vocal, guitar, synth lead just to get it to stand out if everything sounds too new? Sometimes i spend a lot of time doing that trying to get it just right, not too old not too new so it's not boring. Love the collection, would love to learn how to make my own gear to have a secret weapon lol.
Hi +blood lord (Chaotic Sonics) Wonderful stuff! Great to see how you do things! It's fantastic to mess with things and create more personality out of sounds! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Fantastic. I really appreciate this channel and videos like this. Full of information. Videos like these are what makes youtube incredible. The fact that I can sit here and soak up knowledge from the two of you is just amazing to me. Thanks.
Are, AR speakers - sublime! I used to sell HiFi speakers in middle/late 70s. Absolutely the smoothest sweet speakers of all - including large Altecs and larger JBLs. They were liquid dappened way back then absolutely magnificent. I used to use Rod Stewarts ablums to demo the drums and crispness and smoothness. I am back in LOVE!! Oh drool, drool :-))
How could anyone dislike this? To dislike this video is to dislike music in general! Great show as always Warren. So glad I've found this and subscribed. Looking forward to more excellent videos. Btw, perhaps you could swing by Muscle Shoals and check out a studio. We have a very historic studio and some nice modern studios as well. Cheers
Hi +Greg Riley Haha it's ok! Not everyone loves the same music! I would LOVE to go by Muscle Shoals!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
23:45... " and then of course some wonderful, Ya know what I was gonna ask about the Abbey Road, not a lot people know about this,,, " And then Eeerrrt "Is the a real PYE ? " Just one of the things that shows the passion, lol,,, Had to mention it :D Love it ,,, lol Joe needs professional help and he knows it, lol,,, Problem is there is no known cure, lol,,, The only thing that subsides the illness is being able to use it, lol,,, Would love to spend time with one of his worksops... As always GREAT STUFF Warren,,,
Hi +The Rocker Haha Yes Joe has so much gear it's scary!! Everything that I want! haha Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren another marvellous vid, great guy great philosophy, and another studio without really expensive speakersjust goes to show eh ? Any chance in the future doing something around electronic drum kits, recording them playing them etc , cheers Warren .
Hi +Steve Henderson Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Yes Joe RULES!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
your videos Warren are the BEST in RU-vid.. by far..!! We appreciate it soooo much!! I was @ NAMM this last weekend.. hoped to see you there. You should be picked by Mix with the Masters.. I would soooo sign up for that.. The tip on calibrating your protools rig for accepting "hotter" signal from the neve 1073 just made my day!!! I have that problem too.. and didn't know how to best approach it.. Now I'm enlighten!!! thanks to you and Joe.. Cheers
I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS COOL TO LOOK BLACK,BUT THANK YOU FOR INDIRECTLY LETTING ME KNOW YOU'RE NOT BIAS TOWARDS THINGS THAT ARE BLACK...P.S, I WRITE IN CAPS I AM NOT YELLING....
Hi +Asha Olujimi Haha! Cool!! Of course! Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, MILES DAVIS, Stevie Wonder, all Jazz, blues, Motown!! The list goes on and on and on!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Baldwin Hamilton pianos rock...that's what we had in the practice rooms at Otterbein College (Westerville, Ohio) where I studied...amazing pianos. I was lucky enough to buy one at auction here in my town when they tore down the old high school. Built like a tank, hold their tuning forever, and great tone...a studio piano that I prefer over a bunch of higher priced pianos I have played over the years. Thanks for all your great videos, Warren, such a pleasure to see how all these different but amazingly talented folks work!
Hi +jimmyjofine Agreed! I love my Baldwin! We did the first Fray Album on a Baldwin Concert Grand, it was amazing! That's the piano on 'How To Save A Life'! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi again, Warren. Just curious if you had any experience with the Level-or 500 modules? Saw Joe had a couple in his collection and was wondering what he thought of them also. I know they are supposed to do the Level-Loc thing and have heard very sparse examples that sounded good. Just curious if they're good/worth the scratch if I could find a pair. Thanks in advance.
thats what warren should do come back home and start the produce like a pro workshop .. i,l make the tea .. :) lol theres nothing for us anymore. i would work in a studio for free ...just finding one now is the hard part ..
Hi great video I see you have a lot of monitors I was thinking about getting some Yamaha monitors and for starting out I didn't know if size was important I know there is five seven and 8 inch versions. I went with yamaha hs7. Any advice on proper size speaker for a beginner home studio. Thank you.
Hi +everythingtakin Great question! It depends on the size of your room! The larger the room the larger the driver! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks, Warren. You just ruined my morning! I'm personally blaming you and Joe for killing all productivity this Thanksgiving day. I hopped on You Tube to play some music as I started to prep for a wonderful evening with family and friends. BUT NO! You Tube recommended your interview with Joe and there, right out the window, went all of my good cooking intentions. Argh... What an amazing conversation. So much information. So much guidance. So much gear! I thank (and curse) you both. As always a truly fantastic job. P.S. It's with great irony that I, a Yank, wish you, a Brit, a very Happy Thanksgiving! ;)
Hi +Dave Lopez Haha! Yes Happy Thanksgiving to you too!! Sorry to ruin your day with gear talk and music! Haha sounds like a great day to me!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I always wonder when i see like 3 pairs of speaker on the console the inner most ones are so close to each other, how could you get a acurate representation of the sound field that way? or are they redundant enough that it more like checking semi mono-ish that way... I know the ns-10's are very revealing in the mid frequency. Cheers
He wanna know why Joe is one of the best? Because he’s willing to do that crazy shit with wiring pick ups in a guitar and recording every possible variation including every variation of a preamp sound. Who the fuck else would do that?
Jesse Hughes said "There are a lot of magicians around these days but very few wizards." Well, Joe Barresi is a true wizard, one of the very few, completely original and mesmerizing. And the Spinal Tap reference killed me right from the start. I'll stop there because I could praise this man's work for days on end. Great job on this fantastic interview Warren! Thank you and Joe as well.
Hi +noisesoundtonevibe Agreed 100% Joe Rules!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hey Warren, thanks for your interview with Joe. Great guy with A LOT of gear! Quick question about one piece I saw that you guys didn't really touch on. He had a Martech MSS 10 mic pre. I've been looking at them for awhile and thinking about trying one out. I'm a voice over guy, among other things and would like to get Joe's opinion on whether he thinks the MSS 10 would be great for voice overs. If you think it would be better to connect with Joe myself, please share his email address with me. Thanks man. Really enjoy your videos.
Hi +Sheldon Roberts Yes Joe rules! Amazing guy and fantastic collection of gear! I have to go back and do more with Joe, we only just scratched the surface! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
another great tour! can you touch base sometime on your approach to record a singer/acoustic guitar songwriter who only feels comfortable playing together during tracking? thanks!
great episode warren! please pursue more vids w/ joe barresi. how refreshing to hear someone w/ sooo much gear constantly emphasizing the oldschool "record it differently, and creatively" mentality. also tons of great ideas on crazy signal flows... and Peavey! totally agree! i, too, grew up w/ em. it seems that only pros can admit, with pride, that they love their cheap gear- maybe even a bit more than their expensive gear. most everyone else thinks cost=performance/value. exceptions like Peavey dont get alot of love, so it's cool to hear it from others, however rare. anyways, great job, warren!
Hi +Brian Johnson Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Absolutely! Joe rules and I will definitely do more videos with him!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Love the concept of experiment and get away from plug-ins. Funny story, I treated my home studio to control bass and reflections and now my acoustic guitars sound like crap in there so I track them in the two story foyer with slate floor.
Completely brilliant. Loved every morsel of info and felt like a kid in a candy shop. Certainly miss all my analog (now "vintage") gear I stupidly sold back in the '90's!
Hi +Steve Antoniazzi Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Yes Joe is fantastic!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
so this is almost 2 years ago .. I don't know if you check back on this kind of stuff but yes a gr8 interview .. I'm in candyland too & my goal is to be like joe get the sound right commit to it .. but I also want to play with all the new toys too .. lol .. but mainly it's like when you take a car into the garage & you ( I / me ) one does not know enough to say what you want done .. & I know I'm learning a lot enough to work with a pro engineer & be able to keep up with the conversation .. cheers .. Joe is so laid back & you like a couple of mafia guys ' forget about it ' you say it it's done capice lol
Wow! These are some awesome "toys". :-) That's a video I will come back to a few times and take notes. Must be fantastic having the gear, the knowledge and experience to get the sound you are after (or very close) already when tracking. Great video, Warren, as always. You guys really know what you are talking about.
Hi +Christian Schonberger Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes Joe is an amazing talent!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
At the beggining of the video for the live room behind you guys (because of high ceilings) couldn't you just hang some sound absorbers or panels from rope or stilts at the appropriate height parallel or diagonal in different positions to the floor, just space them out so you don't lose the overall sound of the room lenght?
What a great video Warren !! I am from northern Indiana. You made several references to a studio in indiana. What studio are you referring to ? Where is it located? If you don't mind me asking . Thanks a million. Have a good one !
