JOE BONAMASSA Interview + VINTAGE GUITAR MADNESS!!!

I had a great time hanging virtually with my friend, the always amazing and dry-humored Joe Bonamassa. Instead of an "interview", we ended up talking about our vintage guitar obsessions for an hour and a half! We swapped great stories sharing our similar upbringings of playing guitar professionally starting at a very young age in the music biz. I probably first met Joe during his 'Bloodline' tour in the 90's, at the old Antone's on Guadalupe St. here in Austin, TX. Joe is of course considered a living legend in the Blues Rock world. Hope you enjoy this one!

I remember seeing SRV at Chastain Park in the late 80's. The neighborhood complained about the noise, so I watched stevie's tech move the plexiglas screens closer to the cabs. That was turning down! 🤟 Great interview!

I think it's astounding that people in a stadium audience are bitching about the stage volume of a damn Twin. I used to wonder if my Music Man version of that amp was enough for some of the bar gigs I used to play. How have people become so sensitive?

Haha I remember always going to see bands I liked at shows in high school and waking up every time the next morning with ringing still in my ears. Now I just have a twin reverb and blues jr and can’t believe during those days I would play shows with a marshall half stack. Fun video, I always enjoy hearing Joe talk

I understand the whole John Jorgenson thing because his style is so fast and intense, really takes advanced players to learn whole parts of his solos. Orange blossom, back on Terra firma, all those songs had little tricks built in with those incredible chops that you really need to watch them play, instead of learning by ear, or a little of both.

Just finished, what an amazing collection you got there! Fun hearing about the stories. Unfortunately, like Joe talked about, tough for us under 30 folks to touch anything in that class, especially guitars. I've given up on vintage guitars besides my super players grade '63 Jr, but I've gone deep into amps since they're still semi-attainable... though that diminishes day by day and tweeds are in the stratosphere.

Interesting interview, I’ve been learning a lot about guitars and amps from Joe lately watching his vids. The only thing I don’t particularly agree with is the need for high volume/power. I’ve been to a couple of concerts, mainly metal, and thankfully all of them were open air so the extreme volume had a large space to disperse into. Now, in a closed room or hall, all that echoes back and it will get painful very quickly. I watched him at Royal Albert Hall about two weeks ago. It was a life-changing experience, he and the band were fantastic, passionate about music and everything was on point. But then there was the volume. Even thinking about it now makes me shudder. It was soo so loud. It was like hot knives stabbed into my ear repeatedly when he played high notes. Which is a f*cking shame because he is a fantastic musician! I know I’m just some rando from the street, but there’s a reason requirements changing in relation to the volume. Apart from the fact we learn about damage to hearing, the crowd isn’t compiled by Oldfields, the majority of us has ordinary hearing and won’t pick up or look for specific notes. We just want to enjoy the melodies without having tinnitus for 3-4 hours afterwards. I say this in the most respectful manner, I am no musician but I am the one on the receiving end. 🙏

I think the Super Reverb is the best sounding amp Leo Fender ever had anything to do with. From a Tele to an ES335, they just do it for me. It’s worth the extra effort to haul it around imo. Besides that, how else are you going to get that big Black Panel sound at a reasonable price and volume? Great talk with Joe! Subbed.

You don't need a 50's guitar to sound like a 50's guitar. That raspy, woody clear tone, that everyone looks for lives in every eBay bought guitar I own or put together no matter the pickups or pots! My hippie radio tech brother thought me enough to be dangerous! ....Was trying to get a patent/copyright intellectual property is like the border.... Everything built is being copied by our Eastern supplier, as there are many rip offs /illegals are being pushed on an unsuspected public....... B4 you buy a Gibson or anything now days..... get its history! Sad, stage4 and I'm waiting for an act of congress!
