I was at Joe's concert at the vic just hours before this show at the riv in Chicago. My first time seeing joe. never seen gov't mule live but familiar with haynes music. joe is a beast on guitar. can't believe he had the energy to leave just shortly after his 2 or 3 hour set at the vic and go down the street to jam with these guys. He's just one of those guys who loves playing and doesn't want to put that thing down and just wants to collaborate with everybody in the business it seems.

where my guitar playing is at now I am not worthy to string Joes guitar never mind play along side...But even at my level there are times when I want to play but just cant get into it and cant find the sweet spot.. so it amazes me that these guys get up there night after night and kick ass...

Huge JB fan, but I admit I've never heard of Warren Haynes. These two together are absolutely awesome. Just when I thought I'd found all the good older JB videos on RU-vid, I happen onto this one. Fantastic back & forth play.

You can tell that Warren is getting off on Joe's playing and when the two of them start trading licks they just feed off of each other and it awesome to witness something special like these two amazing guitar players ripping it up.

Some players clash but Joe and Warren really complement each other really well. Their styles mesh beautifully. Two real pros playing together and not trying to out do each other like a couple of kids might. They sound like they've played together for years even though this is a one off. This is real music by real musicians.

Blues makes you happy because when you hear it or play it or sing it, your blues go away. That's the reason for the blues.

These guys are simply not meant to be compared to one another. They fantastically and beautifully compliment each others styles. This is not a competition. This is art. This is a blood letting of soul through each of their fingertips. They have played together many times and will continue to seek the satisfaction of playing together again and again. Watching them key off of each other is nothing short of amazing. Warren brings incredibly solid structure. Joe brings those speedy fingertips that work so well within the structure that Warren provides. Neither of them could make this as amazing as it is without the other. Blues at its best and it`s written all over both of their faces. You can tell they are both in heaven. An absolute treasure of a trak. Watching these guys feed off of each other will keep me coming back. ( and already have at least a hundred times.)

Every player has something that makes him unique. Is Joe supposed to abandon his style to accommodate people who believe that chops equals no soul. Some players rely on very carefully placed notes which I love. Others have a more jazzy, improv side where they are not sure where they are going to go and play the transitional runs and do not simply play the 20 to 30 3-4 note licks and link them together. Both styles require talent and originality if you are going to stand out and guys like Bonamassa and Eric Johnson have chops but still stay true to blues tradition with a more progressive sensibility. There is room for both players. To say Joe is not listening and merely rattling off lines that he memorized is a way of dismissing a player who plays with such ease that a lot of players unwilling or unable to do what he does treat him like some 80s shredder which he is not. Stevie Ray Vaughn had chops from hell but because he always went back to his beloved Albert King licks people forget how technical he was. Derek Trucks is another player whose chops go unnoticed because of his great restraint. Joe let's it all hang out and I believe he plays with honesty and is not trying to show off. Warren would probably agree.

That's right Elisabeth! So many guitar players write off anyone with any technical prowess at all with that tired old line about "soul". Give it a break. Just because you can't follow along doesn't mean that some of us can't. Joe strings it together as well as anyone.

It does not get better than that. There comes a point where it simply comes down to taste because the facility on the instrument and the musical vocabulary, tone, timing and note choice are so developed. This is one of those times.

To all the haters: Here's a challenge. Just try to play like Warren Haynes over a blues groove for 8 bars. It's not as easy as it seems. I mean, great bends with perfectly executed intonation and phrasing and solid tone. Try it, then upload it to prove it! I can't do it. Gotta love the Haynes, he's a true inspiration. Thanks for uploading this vid!

The truth is. If you enjoy this, then it's good. If you don't that's okay too. Music like all art is a matter of opinion. My opinion is that Joe Bonamassa is an excellent player, but at this gig, he was just mimicking, trying to prove something instead of doing his own expression. Hey, we're all human. I think Warren Haynes is a more seasoned and mature player. Just my opinion. They are both top notch modern blues players.

@alanpaulchina I'd round out the elite with Derek on slide or 5 string and, as Sleazy point out above, Jimmy, even though he's more jazzy/jammy or basically any rock fusion. But then again, even as I write this it's impossible to leave out the likes of Peter Green, Robert Cray, Jimmy Thackery, Tab Benoit, and the list goes on and on...crazy how almost all the shredders these days are white huh? Enough of my ramblings. Great vid. As always I love anything from Haynes I find. Props.
@Motorsheep

JohnDoe, Warren has been on stage for longer than Joe is even alive. Given some more time, Joe will certainly become just as famous. As to their guitar playing, I think either of them has got things that the other doesn't. Joe can f***ing rock, but he's often too much on the careless, playful, side for me. And then while there's this gravity and a maturity in Warren's playing that I enjoy very much, I sometimes wish he'd play more hard and heavy rock, stuff like Joe's "Quarryman".
@bluesman841
@bluesman841 15 лет назад
I'll say that I can agree with that. I'm not trying to disagree with you! However, Warren also writes great songs and even wrote for JB!! I think he has many impressive skills overall that make him a good musician. And yes, some bands would be nowhere without GD fan base. I never thought Jerry Garcia was a good guitarist, yet I enjoy listening to him, Im guessing thats the situation with you and Warren? If so, I can understand that. What do you think of Steve Howe, out of curiosity.

@LeesJams Me neither man, this guy hates on Warren for some reason, maybe he's jealous I dont know, its sort of sad for him to hate on such a generous nice guy who is a great player.... I dont care how good he says he is, Warren actually proves it by being one of the hardest working musicians around today

the cool thing here is that joe is getting a "green" tone like albert king liked. joe says you'd leave if he played one amp all night. he's making this one sing. i know he took his fuchs out of the rotation a while back. warren of course just cuts it too. these 2 need to do a cd together--talk about some powerful blues rock
