It’s February 1999 and a 25-0 Joe Calzaghe puts his WBO World Super Middleweight title on the line against 26-1 Robin Reid. It proved to be one of Calzaghe’s toughest ever fights. #JoeCalzaghe #RobinReid #CalzagheReid
Calzaghe is right up there with the best fighters of the late 90's to early 2,000's, his totally flawless career record tells you how good Joe was. Unfortunately for him, I don't think he got the recognition he deserves. He was a top quality boxer and a proper nice bloke as well.
@greenfields1221 you've totally missed the point I said calzaghe wouldn't rematch Reid which is facts and wouldn't defend against Froch which is facts I never went into careers and common opponents as I'm sure your aware that he beat him so he would beat him obviously wouldn't determine the outcome of any fight unless you're a clueless casual no offence
@greenfields1221 it is what it is it never happened but JC was the type of fighter to stay comfortable the wbo in those days ment very little to the top fighters they all wanted the wba.wbc.ibf belts the wbo champion was never rated like the big 3 and Joe's 1st 18 or so world title fights were all wbo and he stayed most of the time in wales/Britain knowing that none of the top Americans at the times wasn't bothered about the wbo so travelling to Britain to challenge for it wasn't attractive some say he was hiding in Wales if you remember Peter manfreado got a shot at Joe's belt if that was nowadays Peter manfreado would be jake Paul's level but calzaghe fans never mention that so Peter manfreado getting a shot at calzaghes belt was credible? But froch not a credible challenger?
@greenfields1221 I don't mean former world champions on his record,,, I mean he only held the wbo for his 1st 18 or so world title fights and also he only won ring magazine belt at light heavyweight not a wbc wba ibf or even a wbo
Robin Reid was the fighter who figured out Cazaghi, I honestly think this is Calzaghi's greatest performance because he beat the one guy who figured him out. No-one else got close to stopping Joe Calzaghi.
One of Calzaghe's greatest and most underrated tests... Still deserves so much more adoration for the fight he brought and the fight he forced from Calzaghe.
Calzaghe and Reid both a credit to their sports, both world champions, speed fitness, power , Calzaghe never ducked anyone fouggt the best at thhe highest level and beat them all
Ref was way too lenient on Reid he should've penalized him earlier and continued to do so the more he used dirty tactics. Reid did that because of his frustration due to Joes speed mostly, plus Joe outwitted Reid over all and that caused him to have control of the fight. in spite of all that Reid dug down deep and turned it into a slug fest and picked up the pace and it become a brawl and the fans got what they wanted a great fight.
Probably one of calzaghe's hardest fights Reid looked fit and ripped in this fight if this fight was in this era it would of sold out Wembley or the millennium stadium easy calzaghe always found a way to win in fairness bernard Hopkins cheated in that fight vs Calzaghe he tried every trick in the book to win but joe deserved the win and also Roy jones jr was way past his best in his fight vs Calzaghe he looked a shell of himself Roy who is one of the greatest fighters of all time especially in his prime he was just to good great fighters these were ❤
I think it helped him ultimately, he had to learn to adapt when he came up against someone capable of actually challenging him, someone who actually belonged in the same ring, which he hadn't had to that point apart from Eubank.
That was a great fight. I think many of Calzaghe's punches do more damage than they look like they're doing; Reid's face was evidence of that. Reid hits hard, but Calzaghe could take whatever was thrown at him.
I agree. The announcers kept talking about Calzaghe's punches hitting gloves, but I saw a lot of them getting through. They always pointed out when Reid landed a big one, but always seemed to miss it when Joe got one in. Looking at Reid's face, you can't deny Joe did some damage over the course of the fight.
Joe was the full package and real hall of famer. He suffered a bit through his career with injury, but always come them. As an amature Joe won 3 ABA titles at 3 different weights in successive years. Which had never been acheived before or since. He had amazing hand speed, stamina and boxing brain. Joe Calzaghe should in my opinion get a knighthood! Greatest boxer Britain has ever produced hands down. Oh yeah and he always looked cool too!
I couldn't give it to Reid, he didn't win enough rounds though I would give him a bare minimum of three. There were probably a couple of drawn rounds but Calzaghe was a decisive winner of more than Reid who went to sleep a bit in the sixth and seventh immediately after having a strong fifth. When I say went to sleep, Reid barely threw a punch in those rounds.
The best fighter ever to grace a ring is Salvador Sanchez. Had the best engine of anyone, fought at same pace in round 15 than he did in round one, never was shook, granite chin, superb moving forward as he was going backwards, sublime footwork, could bang with both hands, would slip punches at ease, had every shot in the book, had the same compure for every minute of every round, never once flustered, amazing hand speed, awesome jab, no fighter ever has come close to him and bare in mind he was just 21 when he died, boxers are in their prime come age 27. Toney one of best ever who neglected the gym and his weight said sanchez is the best as did Roy Jones, no more needed to be said.
This fight was a joke. Reid is a dirty fighter and this contest deserved a disqualification for so many reasons. Repeated headbutts, low blows, punches after bell, after ref said stop. So many warnings that should have been points taken.
what a 🏆 joe calzachi was .always the underestimated all threw his boxing career.. and always won.. never ever got the real acclaim as he should rightfully should of.. the best British boxer this country and Wales has produced.. much respect to his father Enzo calzachi.
just watched this fight for the first time since i seen it live. how on earth was that a split decision. joe out boxed him all fight but got caught with single shots a few times. joe was battering him. at the time i wanted reid to beat the cocky welshman. joe totally under appreciated even on his own soil. probably why he never got bigger fights until he was getting old. popularity contest boxing.
thanks for your vital contribution champ. Maybe Brian Hughes should have employed you in his corner. Rob was a bronze medal in 1992 Olympics and a former world champion, not bad for someone who can't box.
I love this boxer Joe . He was amazing to watch and a class act ! Yes, I would have wanted to see him beat Reid in a rematch.. REID WAS A DIRTY FIGHTER. He deserved a severe ass whooping by Joe Calzaghe. I hated that Joe gave Robin too much respect during and after the fight. Reid hit Calzaghe with a vicious sneaky punch, a low blow to the groin, many rapid punches to the kidneys and hitting before & after the breaks. Reid should have been penalized on these numerous accounts. Reid knew what he was doing! He didn't deserve a rematch with Joe. I wish Joe would have shown Reid that he was pissed about being dirty and disrespectful. If I was in Joe's shoes, I would have told Reid to consider himself lucky because the time we meet maybe fatal !😮
Round 11 won it for Joe. He buckled Reid big time. Needed that round. Take emotion out of it.. take the point deduction out of it... Reid didn't win enough rounds. Not rocket science. Casuals get excited because every time Reid landed a right, the commentators were jizzing in their pants
Joe only got better with age. The Joe that fought here would have got cleaned up by the Joe of the future, so what chance would Robin have had later on. God, fighting him a couple of years later was like trying to kiss a jack hammer.
Are any southpaws right handed writers ? I ask because many lefty snooker players use the rest in the same manner as a right handed person, i.e., holding the cue in their right hand, and I've often wondered if any of them also hold a pen that way.
This Robin Reid would have been much harder for Carl Froch. Joe handled over hand rights before, but Robin had good success with them tonight. Still, Joe easily won.
Strange fighter cannot argue with a zero defeat record but to me he slaps more than punches but his ko record is great too strange auld fighter must slap like big daddy
