I've said this before on another post. After Michael Watson, Johnny Owen, Gerald McClellan British referees always step in quick when someone is on the way out. Remember, there was talk of banning boxing in the UK after all the aforementioned deaths and injuries. A referee has to make a life or death decision and he sure don't want to make a wrong one and have the death of a fighter on his conscience. The guy was defenceless, a compassionate ref stepped in to stop the beating. Hats off.

Mark Mywords it's Britian once again paving the way for boxing, if we allow boxers to get seriously hurt over an over they endu p with serious brain injuries or premature parkisons, the sooner we stop a one sided fight the better. I know "but what if he comes back" well if he was THAT great he'd never have to take such a beating really... I will say this fight was stopped far to early, it robbed joe of a legit knockout.
@lukemccann
@lukemccann 6 лет назад
Mark Mywords fully agree. There was no possibility of Manfredo winning this fight. Once that becomes clear, the ref should intervene if he isn’t defending himself appropriately. Even in the rope a dope vs Foreman, Ali would at least lean back and look at the punches in order to evade them, and would throw back! Here Manfredo was just closing his eyes and hoping for the best, offering nothing in return. Safety of the fighters was rightly held as the #1 priority here.
@JoE-hv7rg
@JoE-hv7rg 5 лет назад
Personally I would rather see the ref stop the fight early rather then see a fighter get hurt bad, You can't come back from a bad call but you can't come back from death/serious injury. It's not good for the sport and most of all it's even worse for the fighters who have to live after the fight.

This was a stoppage that was a little too early, but to be honest, that ref did Manfredo a huge favor by saving him from a total ass whoopin' and then a guaranteed KO by Joe Calzaghe. Anybody that thinks Manfredo stood any kind of chance is smokin' birdseed. No comparison of talent. Manfredo looked like an amateur, plain & simple. He had nothing for Joe.

I don’t understand the ‘slap’ comment. When you put on a pair of professional boxing gloves you hand via the glove is stitched closed. It is physically impossible to open your hand and slap. Probably why only the casuals and haters make that comment because they have never laced up. Calzaghe occasionally threw shots from a wide arching angle...but anyone who says it is a slap can’t have ever put on a pair of gloves or is just ignoring reality and hating.
@glasschin871
@glasschin871 3 года назад
A body shot hurt him before the flurry and he was just covering up not fighting back. The ref didn’t have the best angle but it’s manfredos thought he barely threw a punch the whole way.

Too many of Calzaghes fights were stopped like this which actually robbed him more than anyone. Clearly he was going to win the fight as well as the many others that were stopped similarly. Had he been allowed to finish them off his critics wouldn't be able to call him "just a slapper."

It seemed rather premature but it's not a 'home town stoppage' because that's suggesting that it was stopped to aid the home fighter, and I don't think many people could be so deluded as to think that. It was stopped because the referee was seeing a hopelessly out of his depth fighter doing virtually nothing but a turtle impersonation. Perhaps the premature roars of the crowd everytime Manfredo was near the ropes influenced the referee into thinking the situation was more dramatic than it was, maybe also the memory of Lacy getting hammered a bit too long was on his mind, I don't know. The behaviour of refs in Britain became considerably more 'better safe than sorry' after tragic results in the same weight division in the early 90s.

@danyoutube7491
@danyoutube7491 5 лет назад
One may call the last few punches slaps, but that's just down to the way Manfredo was ducking and weaving his head, and Joe's was automatically throwing his hands at the target which from that odd angle made the punches awkward and look 'slappy'. If you mean his normal punches were slaps, well...why did they immediately make Manfredo back off and get his guard up and almost entirely stop firing back, and why is it so clear in the slo mo replay that Manfredo's guard is being battered open by Calzaghe's 'slaps'? He was rather heavy handed, so even his salvos of light shots could be decently hard. Whenever he landed in this fight the effect on Manfredo was visible, and he was rocking his head back and breaking his guard open with those supposedly weak punches.

A world title at stake and the ref. does that??? I know he meant well but Manfredo showed no sign of distress or injury....Refs are under a lot of pressure because of the number of deaths that have occurred in recent years and they tend to protect themselves as much as they do the fighter...Manfredo and his corner and promoters must have gone home with a sour taste in their mouths and no, not from Galzhage's gloves.
@danyoutube7491
@danyoutube7491 Год назад
Another round of the same and he'd either have stuck in his turtle shell or come out of it and taken cleaner shots. He wasn't showing signs of injury but he was showing signs of being out of his league by a country mile; the covering up looked like a last resort of someone who had realised they couldn't compete rather than a clever tactic (if he really thought he could make Calzaghe punch himself out then he was delusional, because he would no doubt have seen some footage of previous Calzaghe fights and without doing something to make it a rough fight for Calzaghe or making him miss a lot slowing down wasn't going to happen) and under the rules you have to be protecting yourself and fighting back. He offered one modest punch near the end before going back into his shell as Calzaghe started raining the shots in. It would have been more entertaining for fans to see a longer fight though.

@danyoutube7491
@danyoutube7491 6 лет назад
@Zaytony: The last few weren't landing as Manfredo began ducking his head at/slightly below waist level- he did this because the several previous shots were landing, albeit mainly on his gloves, and despite his gloves being clamped to his head Manfredo's head was actually being buffetted quite a bit by those shots, so they obviously had a fair amount of power. The whole round had seen Manfredo becoming progressively less effective at even avoiding shots, to the point that he hadn't tried to fire back for some time and had only been able to try and keep his guard up as much as possible and get pushed back by Calzaghe's advance. Sure he wasn't on the verge of being knocked out, but the evidence of the previous round and the third up to that point made it clear that the fight wasn't a contest any longer, and Manfredo already seemed to have run out of ideas during the second of how to stop Calzaghe simply using him as target practice. That said, I concede that Manfredo wasn't severely hurt, just battered and out of his depth, and the pure spectator part of me wishes it had been in America where perhaps more consideration would have been given to giving Manfredo every chance to shine and where, perhaps, there is not such a strong culture of stepping in when a fight has become very one sided or a fighter is hurt- in other words, the fight would surely have been allowed to go on far longer and we may have seen much greater drama and excitement, and either a convincing KO or an uncontentious stoppage. But to go by the rules and ideals of the sport, one could argue that the ref was right to stop it, because it hadn't looked like a true contest since early in the second round and despite what the crowd often wants to see, if it isn't a contest then it shouldn't be happening.

Maybe he wasn't hurt, but, should he be subjected to harsher punishment until he was really hurt?.... Are you sick or something?. The ref did the kid a favour, making it pos. for him to fight again, instead of being brain damaged by repeated punishment.

***** NOBODY! knew what Emanual did, he was a true hero of the sport, he was the Alber einstain of Boxing, 31 wins in title files of his boxers, just 3 times where his boxers didn't WIN their title fight, though 2 draw and ONE loss. that record not only hadn't been beat.. hasn't been neared. Sorry, I get upset thinking about Mannys passing on.
