Why do we love Cocker? One, his emotional transparency, the ability to transport us to a place with which we immediately identify because his singing is so authentic, plain and yet at the same time theatric. Two, as he seemingly struggles with each tune, he always emerges triumphant at the song's end, with his occasionally cracking voice nevertheless unerringly soaring or sinking as the occasion requires. Three, we know his tale, how he perilously looked over the edge, and with the love of a great wife stepped back and lived a fulfilled life--and we can do that as well, if a steel fitter from Sheffield can. While I understand why some may see despair in this rendition of an underappreciated Lennon classic, I see it as a performance and message of courage, confronting and ultimately overcoming the fear that grows naturally from isolation. A suitable message to bolster the indomitable spirit in each of us, shuttered from each other as we may be.
It amazes me that so many great songs I hear for first time long after sung. I really love this song! I also love the video, and of course the great Joe Cocker... can't get enough of JC! Wonderful!
