Joe Cool GTO, that is the plan! Hot summer days, a lot of horsepower, and a heavy foot spell heat! This 1968 Pontiac GTO muscle car is packing over 600 horsepower and come this winter, it will be a lot more! The current cooling system in this hot rod consists of a stock water pump, an aftermarket stock style aluminum radiator, and a twin electric fan setup. It does an okay job, but there is always room for improvement. The cooling system protects your engine from overheating, and you don't want all your hard-earned money and time up in smoke!
This is where Wizard cooling and Flowkooler come in. After doing quite a bit of research, the decision was made to swap out the radiator and water pump. We chose the Wizard radiator due to the capacity and the size of the internal cooling tubes, much better than stock. The Flowkooler water pump is pretty cool, no pun intended. While it looks stock, it is far from stock on the inside. It has a billet water pump impeller that flows a lot of coolant and is built to last. These two upgrades should really keep things cool when it matters. We are keeping the dual setup from the previous setup, it works very well and is easily controlled by the Holley Sniper EFI computer.
In this video we explain the parts in detail and start the disassembly process. This is another one of those DIY jobs you can do with basic hand tools and a little bit of time, a few friends helping is a good thing too! Best part, it is not a budget breaking upgrade. That being said, it is worth the investment to have the proper cooling system for your classic car. Whether you are cruising or hitting the dragstrip, your cooling system is very important. At the end of this video, we ran into a slight snag. the water pump plate was absolutely toast! No big deal, we ordered one up and it will be here in a few days! Another important tip, always inspect the parts you are reusing! There will be a part two video, we will get this all put back together and do some testing! Stay tuned!
