I have so much respect for Def Leppard (and I am sure many said it before me already), because not only is their music so great, but they did not abandon Rick Allen after his accident. I mean, they made changes to accommodate this man, and the band moved on as one. That is humanity at our finest.

The problem with that statement is I wonder how much input they had... I mean seriously listen to mutt Lange's body of work... He's the one responsible for all these artists... They may have thought it was their stuff but musically it's all the same... I wouldn't be complaining... But Lange took a lot of artists to the bank with him!

To go one step further, the Mutt Lange factor essentially made Adams, Leps and Shania all the same artist. The fact that Mutt had such a large role in the writing also contributed to this homogenization of sound. I have been saying this for years...

I’m glad I went to see the baseball stadium tour with def Lepp and Bryan adams. I was front row on the field in front of Phil collen and he threw his pick directly at me after his solo. Will never forget that moment. And then after the show bryan happened to be sitting in the front of the tour bus as it had not left the field and someone happened to mention it to me. I took his program with me to the bus and he was gracious enough to sign it for me as well. That was one of the best experiences someone could take away from a great show.

Glad I’m not the only one to pick that up, and yes, the key to the entire recipe there is Mutt. When you look back at Adrenalize (and this is even crazier), half of that CD could have easily been covered or recorded outright by Shania Twain. If you put a country twang or shuffle to Stand Up (Kick Love into Motion), Personal Property, Heaven Is, or Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad, those songs could easily been off of Shania’s second album, which is the one Mutt produced.

Joe is such an amazing singer. You really have to hand it to him when he goes on stage and goes all out. Though Mutt Lange is the guy who really pushed Joe to find his best qualities. I remember hearing Joe say how on "High and Dry," Lange kept yelling at him to push himself and then do take after take until Lange was satisfied. That gravelly voice is on those tracks is no accident.

You know, I ALWAYS thought that about *Waking Up The Neighbours" that it sounded like Def Leppard (And yes, I had the album on CD and knew it was produced by Mutt Lange.) Bryan Adams was technically just Rock, but he was frequently Hard Rock, but on this album he was even Metal at times, especially with "Don't Drop That Bomb On Me" which is straight-up Heavy Metal and very much in the style of Def Leppard. I even heard a rumor at that time that Def Leppard was considering possibly getting Bryan Adams to join as rhythm guitarist and co-lead vocalist after Steve Clark died. I'm sure that was just a rumor but how incredibly cool in that context it was for Joe Elliott to say that Bryan Adams could have fronted Def Leppard?? That's high praise right there. ❤

Vocally I hear a lot of influence in the raspy tenor voices of rock and three specifically who I think could easily sing each others catalog... Don Henley, Bryan Adams and Joe Elliot. Bryan and Joe both really came into the spotlight around 1980-81, so I would Henley's influence heavy on both of them... Listen to Desperado or Boys of Summer and imagine Bryan or Joe singing these tunes, I'm sure they probably both have at some point in their vocal journey.

There’s an inverterlude in ‘Can’t stop this thing we started’ that fits perfectly with the interlude in ‘Foolin’. Seriously. CSTTWS interlude - “Oh, why take it slow? I gotta know Hey, 'cause nothing can stop this thing that we got, yeah” Foolin’ interlude - “Oh, I just gotta to know. If you're really there and you really care 'Cause baby I'm not” But you have to sing them. It’s uncanny how it fits. Every time ‘Can’t stop…’ came on the radio I would sing the Foolin’ Interlude over top. Give it a try.

Further, in a followup tour in the fall of 05, both acts went out on another co-headline tour again but this time the Leps closed every night.

It's on Mutt's insistence too no doubt, working with him seems to have that effect on artists, even The Corrs suddenly sounded like Def Leppard music when they came from the David Foster sound machine (which I think suited them better) but when artists go with Mutt it's usually a smart move business-wise. Artistically, well, that's a whole other thing altogether and maybe not so smart. In Bryan's case, it really wasn't just the song arrangements and production sound that changed it was a complete 180 vocally too. He was transformed into Joe, which was quite insane when you think about it knowing what a fantastic singer Bryan was already in his own right, with an unmistakingly unique voice why change that to become a Joe Elliott clone of all people. Hence, WUTN remains my last BA album, I jumped ship there to me he's strictly an '80s artist so I'd presume his fan group is split into two secret invisible fractions; the pre-Mutt fan section and the Mutt one.

I listened to all the Def Leppard & Bryan Adams music in the 80s and 90s ove rand over. I never heard the similarityof Bryan Adams to Def Leppard music. Never even occurred to me before. Interesting.

"Thought I Died and Gone to Heaven" was quite "Def Leppardish!" I thought so the first time I heard it. Cross-pollination was an excellent analogy. Many of the songs by one would be very nicely replicated by the other especially during and after HYSTERIA.

Joe Elliott just said something that I was thinking of years ago. One day I was thinking who could replace Joe Elliott in Def Leppard that sounds similar to him. I came up with Bryan Adams. I thought his scratchy voice is pretty close to Joe Elliott’s, but I didn’t know Mutt Lange produced Bryan’s album until a couple of years ago.

Both DL and Bryan Adams write great songs. Bryan could fill in for Joe and make the crowd happy. But sooner or later they'd want Joe back. Same with a visa versa situation.

My obsession with Def Leppard actually began when I heard Let's Get Rocked playing in a music shop. I stopped in my tracks when I heard the vocals cos I was convinced it must be a new album from Bryan Adams, with whom I was already obsessed. So in my mind I always thought Joe sounded like Bryan, not the other way round. Hehe.

There's a Starship song called I Didn't Mean to Stay All Night, written by Lange, and with his backing vocals, that sounds just like a Def Leppard or Bryan Adams ballad.

It's the Mutt Lange drums, aka triggers, from that Era. Listen to Leppards Hysteria album then listen to a song like Thought I died and Gone to Heaven by Bryan Adams. The bIG production and drums are identical. Massive production.

Its good to live long enough to hear Joe Elliot say what I said back at the time... Mutt Lange puts his stamp on a band and especially in the 80s there was a definite sound and style that was similar no matter who the artist was.

He did the same with Shania Twain's after they were married, some of her stuff definitely sounded more Def Leppard-ish, and I remember thinking that at the time (early 2000s)

Mutt Lange is a musical and production genius. While some of the songs from Shania, Bryan, AC/DC and Def Leppard do sound familiar because of his influence… they’re all timeless classics that we all remember and love. And none of the bands are egotistical enough to mind

Another reason why to love Def Leppard...Speaking the truth. Joe Elliot is awesome!! I'm a Van Halen fan and a Def Leppard fan. I wish the Van Halen album's were produced by Mutt. Seems like he figured out how to distinguish the drums, vocals, and guitars (especially the guitars) on the mix to make everything crystal clear. For future concerts, Def Leppard needs to use one of their most talented members and showcase their contributions to rock history in their shows....all the cool Dio suff. Seems like they're not capitalizing on Viv's accomplishments...which they have every right to do. Not to mention, Viv kicks ass and should be able to show the crowd his history. PLEASE JOE ELLIOTT SEE THIS!!!

I played golf with Joe in South Africa right before the Joburg stadium concert and what an amazing guy he is. He played great and we had to rush back from Dainfern to the stadium to play. We literally got stuck in a traffic jam and were about 30 mins late so when we eventually got in front of the stadium Joe jumped out the car ran inside, poured a bucket of water over his head and ran on stage in front of 50 000 people and smashed it for 2 hours. It was a beautiful day with a rock star who has absolutely zero ego.

The answer to this question is simple: Mutt Lange. Listen to everything he writes and you'll recognize his sound. And i'm certainly not complaining. The same can be said of all songwriters who work with different artists (Desmond Child, Diane Warren, Jim Steinman, Holly Knight, etc...). Listen to ''Heaven's On Fire'' (Kiss), ''Poison'' (Alice Cooper), ''You Gove Love a Bad Name'' (Bon Jovi) and ''I Hate Myself For Loving You'' (Joan Jett) and tell me you don't recognize Desmond Child. Or the themes for ''Superman'', ''Star Wars'', ''Indiana Jones'' and ''E.T.'' and the usual John Williams musical motifs.
