The most amazing thing about frazier is he was essentially blind in one eye and had a short arm due to an accident he had as a kid.... dude was a WARRIOR

I met Joe Frazier one time in the Philadelphia airport. What a nice guy, took time to talk with a nobody and gave me his signature. One shake of his hand and I knew right away why he was the champ.
I'm a Joe fan. Ali was an ass. Joe tried to help Ali and spent his own money and efforts to help Ali get back into boxing and then Ali talked some vicious crap about Joe. Joe was a class act, man. I recognize Ali as a great boxer. Maybe the greatest. But Joe was a terrific boxer and also a good human.

What a classy guy. Instead of just parading the belt, he used his personal cash and influence to make sure the deposed champion come back to face him. That's real class.
Great point, didn't see it that way. Most fighters would've paraded with the belt & left the true champion to fend for his self. Look at what's going on today. The best fighters are hesitant to fight. So they sure as hell wouldn't bail each other out to fight them. Frazier was a true champion. Essentially freed Ali just so he could beat him and PROVE he's the real champ

Joe Frazier to me is what I imagined boxing as a kid, a sportsman who doesn't speak much, driven by his relentless will wether if it is fueled by anger, frustration, determination or to overcome his adversities. Though to me, the greatest martial artists stayed humbled throughout their lives, master of their crafts who doesn't get changed by fame or wealth and Joe Frazier was one of them... Rest in Peace champ.
In 1960, JFK became the first "made for TV" President and Ali became the first "made for TV" Boxer. It was Ali who started all the Trash Talk and antics in the ring that was to go one to influence many other Boxers in the future. It was with Ali that Boxing became less of a Sport and more of a Performance, a little like what happened in Pro Wrestling. But the promoters knew how to get more SUCKERS to buy more tickets, even SUCKERS who had never been interested in Boxing before. Their trick was to give the audience a "Show" rather than a straight "Sporting Event". Ali was the one who started "Boxing as a Performance" and today, at age 73, I'm convinced that his "act", his "performance" Was NOT just of his own invention. Someone behind the scenes had written Ali's script for him, perhaps some Powerful and Smart men behind the scenes who already knew how much money could be made from this new thing called TV. All you needed was avery talented boxer whose Big Mouth and childish antics make a Tidal Wave of SUCKERS gladly open up their wallets for that Egomaniac disguised as a Boxer named Ali. And Ali's Egomania was a template for all the Egomaniacs to follow in his wake, "Showmen" like Leonard, Macho Camacho and lately Boxers like Tyson Fury. Ali was really the WORST Thing to happen to the History of Boxing. So much so that fans called the more recent Champion Klitschko brothers from Ukraine "boring" because they still saw Boxing as a Sport and NOT At All as a Performance or an Act of any type. He is making me the white guy because he has a gift from god that he can talk better than me" Such a straightforward moment of truth. To be honest, it cuts a lot deeper than Ali's funny rhymes. Joe just said things as they are and laid out the most important facts. No bees no butterfly bullshit.
When the British TV show "This Is Your Life" honored Muhammad Ali in 1978, one of the final guests, which came as a complete surprise to Ali, was Joe Frazier. Frazier walked out on stage with a smile a mile long, happy to be there, happy to see Ali, and he turned a great event into an even greater event. And honestly, Ali didn't deserve Frazier's presence, and he probably knew it. Not after the horrible things he'd said about Frazier for years on end. But Frazier was the bigger man on that day in 1978, and he probably taught Ali something about humility as well, hopefully making Ali a better person for it.
I saw that show on RU-vid and you can tell Ali was happy to see Joe and was humbled by his presence. When Joe told a story about the 2 setting up the first fight in Joe's car Ali was just tickled by Joe story. Joe was a great champion and a great man. Ali I bet wished he didn't say all those terrible things.
@@89DrFunk I believe this is even mentioned in "When We Were Kings" but I think Ali absolutely came to regret what he said about Frazier and respected the man. It was not Ali's individuality that made him so famous but his ability to connect to other humans and his ability to change, and I believe definitely changed a lot from the man who insulted Joe Frazier.

Out of the three champs of the time, Ali, Frazier, and Foreman, Frazier is the most under rated by far. This was the best mini doc I have ever seen on Frazier. Thanks for making this and may the man R.I.P.
What Ali did to Fraizer was unforgivable. Only a real man like Fraizer could forgive such betrayal. Unlike so many champions who became champions because of God given talents, Fraizer became a champion because he paid his dues and earned every fight he won, and lost. He was and will probably remain the most unappreciated and underrated heavyweight champion in history with, perhaps, the exception of Lennox Lewis, whose career seems to have been an eerie replay of the Joe's struggle for the cruel and fickle hearts of boxing fans. But, as anyone who has ever had to fight an opponent so adored and enamoured by his fans that they see you as no more than a bug to be crushed under their hero's foot, it is that hero's respect that matters the most. Joe Fraizer earned that respect the day he beat Ali where it counted the most: in the ring. RIP Mr Fraizer, for you earned your place as a champion and there are many who will always remember you for that.
Why are people saying it was unforgivable and he got his revenge. Like what more could he have got other than to maul Alli. And he did! Alli was a trash talker. What did you expect??
@@whoopdewhoop7154 well the thing that Ali did was, despite being a supposed civil rights icon, that he attacked Fraizer for being "uglier, dumber and blacker" than him, and that's after Fraizer, quite graciously actually supported Ali and helped him return to the sport. It's extremely hypocritical and ungrateful. Fraizer helped him, only for Ali to try to use Joe head as a springboard while saying "later, loser". It completely torpedos the mythic persona of Ali as this great man of virtue. Like you can make the argument that Ali was just selling the fight, but the counterpoint to that is that if Ali really cared about his fellow blacks and how they're looked at by the rest of the world, then maybe he wouldn't try to destroy public perception of another black man who objectively came from even worse circumstances just to squeeze even more money out of the media circus. The way he got up from those Foreman Bombs was ridiculous. Frazier was Willpower incarnate. He would have fought till death if he were allowed to do so, that kinda man never loses at anything.

I've always been a combat sports fan (MMA, Karate, Olympic Wrestling), but never taken anything other than a mild interest in boxing until recently and now I'm BINGEING all the big fights (Rumble in the Jungle, Gatti v Ward I II and III, Bowe vs Holyfield trilogy, you get the picture; enough of my rambling) and a big Thank You to you and all the other boxing channels that fuel this kick that I hope will never end!

Frazier won the fight, no doubt; but, he didn't whip Ali's ass. By the way, I loved both fighters equally. Did not prefer one over the other. My two favorite fighters. I wasn't around when Joe Louis was fighting.
In my personal opinion, Joe Frazier was the real life version of Rocky. Yes, I know Chuck Wepner was the inspiration, but come on. Joe's from Philly, he trained in a slaughterhouse he worked at by punching meat, he ran the steps of the Philly museum, he defeated the goat, and he was known for having the biggest heart in all of boxing. He's Rocky. Or better yet, Rocky is Joe.
Well, the only counterpoint to that is that Joe wasn't necessarily an underdog. Like yeah, maybe in the media circus because Ali ran circles around him in the press, but in terms of actual fighting he was a beast.

He helped Ali and bailed out his family when Ali was in prison. He was rewarded with a barage of insults and public humiliation. I can't forgive Ali for that. Don't think Joe could either. Rip, legend of a man.

I watch a TON of youtube and I don't remember last time I was rivetted to the screen as much as this. I had to watch this standing up, from excitement. Thanks for uplifting the story of Joe Frazier. It's easy to think that he was just an opponent... He was part of the golden era and a top tier champion who gave the audience everything they could ever want!

I used to hate him cuz I loved Ali, and that mf made him a villain even after 50 years... It's so so shameful what he did to Frazier, and I'll never forgive him for that shit. Joe inspired me to practice the noble art but above all his behavior inside and outside the ring is something exceptional. Thank you for this video in his memory 🙏🏻❤️
He was the greatest in my personal opinion. And was glad to see him and ali move on from all the hatred they had for each other and become great friends.
Frazier was a model of dignity and integrity and a devastating fighter. We all know that being a heel drives ratings, but I get choked up seeing the amount of abuse that Ali dragged into their rivalry. I bet he felt a lot of remorse for it in later life.
After the Thriller in Manilla Muhammad Ali called for Joe's son Marvis. He said to him he was sorry for the hurt he had caused their family, and to tell his father that he didn't mean the things he had said. It was an olive branch. Marvis told his father, and Frazier said no, why doesn't he say those things to me, why doesn't he apologise to me. A complicated relationship, and it's easy to see that moment from both sides. Ali respected Frazier, he just didn't pay him that respect in public. For Joe Frazier, as a straightforward and proud man, sentiment was all well and good but simply had to be backed up by man to man, face to face respect.
I am seventy years old now and Joe Frazier is and always will be my favourite heavyweight champion of the world of all times, in the ring and outside of the ring. The true champion for me.
I met Mike Tyson when I worked at The Ritz in philly.Mike was waiting for his car from the Valet. We were talking, about boxers from Philly.and I mentioned that Joe Frazier was from Philly.Mike smiled looked at me and Said "Joe Frazier is from Philly"? ..Next day he mentioned it in his press conference.Ill never forget the smile on Mike Tyson's face when I mentioned Joe Frazier..Mad Respect!
To me, Joe's second greatest fight, right behind his victory over Ali, was the Foreman fight. To get knocked down 6 times by the heaviest most vicious punches any boxer ever absorbed (one Foreman punch launched Joe's entire body off the ground), and to get up 6 times ready to fight some more was the most champion thing I ever saw in life. To this day. As pure boxing goes, he became my all time favorite that night. Love you, Smokin Joe. You're #1 in my book.
That fight reminded me of the fight scene in "Cool Hand Luke" where Paul Newman's character kept getting up and said to George Kennedy's character "you're going to have to kill me" Frazier had no ability to "stay down"
Yeah. Paul Newman played some of the coolest characters ever seen on film. And they didn't always come out on top like some bogus super hero. Joe was even cooler and absolutely real. Not the best boxer ever, but my hands down favorite.✊🏾💯
This doesn't get talked about enough! The fact that Frazier got up SIX TIMES against arguably the strongest puncher in boxing history, George Foreman, and still looked ready to go the distance, is simply incredible. The man was literally the meaning of the phrase "He doesn't stop."
@@khoshaba-cr3oi And yet Ali made Foreman look ineffectual. Imagine being one of the "strongest punchers" in heavyweight history and this guy comes out, takes everything you have, says "that all you got?" and then knocks you down. That era was truly the highlight of heavyweight boxing
@@harfgarflarf Foreman would have knocked Ali around the ring for fun if he'd just invited him come to him in the centre of the ring. Ali didn't have the reach to dance round Foreman or the strength to knock him out and as champion Foreman didn't have to do anything except invite Ali forward.
Being 66 now and having watched these fighters as a young teen, my respect and admiration for Mr. Frazier has only increased throughout the years. You have provided an excellent narrative as to not only the Boxing Talents of Mr. Frazier but his solid Character and Integrity as well. As far as his historical impact upon Boxing, i truly believe he is without a doubt Top 10! 🤙
Joe was so tough you can't measure it. Nobody actually compares to him when it comes to being able to take a punch and to throw one back. Plus, he was just a nice guy.
Its really odd your analysis, did you watch Joes fight with Foreman? The nightmare it was? Is like he had cheated being world champion? I think he had studied Ali's weakness and blind spots and then trained around that. Is why Ali nearly died in that ring..however to state that he was the greatest and all is a bit far fetched
@@cptathensjohnclaba8705 Maybe... Many fighters really aren't the same after very tough fights. You can see it sometimes in MMA too. Most people never take a hard punch in their entire life. These guys take many murderous blows.
Excellent presentation! I've read many books on boxing and the one episode that sticks in my mind is how badly Ali treated Frazier after Frazier not only helped Ali get his boxing licence back but also lent him funds to survive! Frazier is my all time favourite boxer; not just because of his ordeals in the ring but also how he conducted himself outside of the ring. Thank you for a fantastic vid :-)
@@sdgakatbk ali was a great fighter persona idol etc. But as a real person not so much. We all have flaws we all make mistakes however what he said about Joe was mean and a double cross. In the big picture most people over look his mean spirit displayed in the public eye. If he was a Politian he would have ruled if he was a Full time hollywood star he could have been a box office smash but deep down inside Ali was nt so nice.

Love both of these men. Used to think Ali was a personal hero. But with time, it was Joe Frazier and his heart and humility which I came to respect the most. Incredible fighters both.
Frazier was not an all time great,he was trouble for Ali and that was it. He ducked an old Sonny Liston Ernie Shavers and Ron Lyle for starters. He beat two tomato cans in his only title defenses and was nearly beaten twice by a very pedestrian Bonevena. I do think that style wise Tyson was a super charged version of Frazier who would have iced Ali in later rounds or beat Ali in a very lobsided decision. Mike had a much better defense than Joe and hit way harder and faster.
@@st7728 Yes Ali had feet of Clay no pun intended. He didn't dodge the draft because of protest but because he feared for his life and Ali only wanted to make money. A sports illustrated reporter accidently left a recorder running and was talking to Ali at the time of his refusal and Ali said on the recording that he just wanted to make money and not fight in war. The whole doing it for Asains or blacks was a lie as most of Ali's legacy was a lie, Ali had the right not to go but his pretending to be a hero and proclaimed hero for his stand when he was just a coward is pathetic and tells you Ali was just faking as always.

Joe was an extremely SMALL heavyweight, even by 1970 standards. The standard heavyweight was around 6’3, 220 lbs. Joe was a dwarf by comparison at 5’10 and a weight that might go as low as 190 lbs. That small man humbled many giants. Hat tip to you, Joe.

I don't even like boxing, but these stories are so told so well and so universally awesome that I am glued to my seat watching with excitement. It's nice to see someone rise from nothing with nothing but determination and hard work.
Honestly, all the content from@@RainyDayBoxing is quality. They show so much reverence for what is a huge part of the global cultural legacy of martial arts.
As a kid I rooted for Ali including his bouts vs. Frazier. As I got older with better knowledge of facts and understanding the ways of the world, my respect for Frazier grew exponentially. I prefer Frazier and it makes me angry how poorly Ali treated Frazier even after Frazier went out of his way to help Ali including lending him money when Ali was broke. Frazier's legacy is strong, but I think he deserves a higher rating given his many big wins, quality of opponents during a golden era of HW boxing, his smaller/shorter size and reach in a tough HW division. He was also nearly blind in one eye. Despite his short height and reach, Frazier exerted extreme pressure on his opponents, wading forward, bobbing and weaving to close the distance. Once inside, Frazier would throw viciously powerful hooks and upper cuts. Absolutely brutal body puncher. He beat Ali badly in their first fight and that was Ali in his prime when everyone felt that Ali was perhaps the greatest boxer ever. Frazier dominating Ali in their first fight is how I remember Frazier and not the beating he took vs. George Forman. Frazier was the epitome of toughness (mental & physical) and personal character. RIP Joe!
@Mohamed Laarabi Ali was mighty close to his prime when they fought the first time. He was out of boxing for 3 years because he made the choice not to fight for his country knowing there'd be serious ramifications. He made that choice, nobody else.

I, like many, was mesmerised by Ali 'performance'. But, 'How poorly Ali treated Frazier'?!...the man couldn't keep his mouth shut from spitting incessant insults at Frazier. He was incandescently insulting to JF. And thankfully Ali was genuinely repentant at how he spoke about JF. And any guy who could fight like JF did, blind in one eye and a shortened arm, was one hell of a dude. Not to mention he was always a gentleman.

100% agree!! As much as I admire Ali (who was a true humanitarian as well as a spectacular fighter)--he crossed the line with his insults of Frazier. Joe never forgot--and I don't blame him a bit for despising Ali!!

Ali did nothing that he didn't do with many other opponents. And most of those opponents say that they were honored to be dissed by Muhammad Ali. Frazier came across as a very insecure man to be so bothered by Ali's trash talk.
Joe Frazier was a super being. That brother got unimagination speed. Joe Frazier took hits on his head and kept coming towards his opponent. Joe Frazier was special and fearless his glory days. Joe Frazier and Ali....🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
I believe Tyson would win due to a much heavier punch and quicker hands, but Frazier is indeed the toughest HW boxer of all time and one of the greatest. Fighting styles are very similar between the two, but I think Tyson would win. Would be a good fight.
He was my hero, I remember listening to the first fight with my elder brother who was backing Ali, but when Joe smoked Ali with that left hook my heart skipped a beat and I remember thinking 'I think he just won' and he did. What a man, what a fighter, what a champion. RIP Joe.
It was actually a dark, rainy/snowy, cold day where I live but my bright spot today was boxing training and unexpectedly getting a compelling doc like this to watch after a good training session. Much appreciated and please keep up the good work.
I don't think the world will experience this sort of heavyweight bout ever again. Respect to both legends, more respect Joe frazer. He was such a fearless and devasting boxer.
My uncle always said Frazier was his hero. So much so that, when he lost to Foreman, he got emotional. Frazier was one of the greatest people's champs.
Frazier was and still is one of the greatest to ever lace up and get in the ring . He may not have been one of the biggest, fastest or strongest punchers . But he he was without question one of the busiest with a warriors heart and the will of 2 more. RIP Champ

I loved Joe Frazier, I was lucky enough to attend his gym and spend sometime with him before he passed. A man more humble than he had any right to be, given all that he achieved. It’s impossible not to think of Ali alongside him, both great men in their own right but together they elevated each other’s legacies.

Ali was a dishonourable man who took Frazier's money when his license was suspended and assassinated his character after he got his license back. There is no human worse than an ingrate who stabs his friend in the back. Ali doesn't deserve to get his name uttered alongside Frazier's.

Love Joe, his humble nature and kind heartedness, is known to the world. Mohd Ali, Joe, foreman and the boxers of that era were super humans. They entertained their fans at the cost of their lives. By the way they were best of friends.
Joe frazier is my favorite heavyweight of all time, he was TRULY relentless til the end, even when he was nearly out on his feet and had no clue where he was he was still tryna throw that left hook, he'd get hit with the force of a freight train and stand right back up before the ref got to 3. Ali was iconic, but I think people remember his trash talk a little more rosy than it actually was at the time. Joe was a class act and a warrior.
