“When I came back from Vietnam, I knew I was going to be a writer; that was it,” says Joe Haldeman, author of the seminal work of science fiction, The Forever War. Drafted in 1967, Haldeman fought in Vietnam and was awarded several medals, including a Purple Heart. He has since published over two dozen novels, short story collections, and poems, and won multiple awards, including the Nebula, Hugo, Locus, and World Fantasy Awards.
Now, Joe Haldeman shares how his experiences in combat led to his desire to write-and to write science fiction. “I wrote constantly in Vietnam,” he says. “I was practicing for the novel that I wanted to write.” Regarded as one of the greatest military science fiction novels ever written, The Forever War is as relevant today as it was in the 1970s.
Take a look at the beginning of “the war that lasted forever."

Why the hell nobody ever adapted this masterpiece in cinema?

I hope they never do because they'll fuck it up.

Actually Ridley Scott intended to make it into a movie, but I guess we probably will never see that day comes.

They are working on it. Have been for a long time actually. Hopefully they pull it off, because it’s an amazing book.

@@paxdei1988 😂🤣😂🤣They probably will. Like with Foundation, by Asimov. That looks like nothing in the books.

Just listened to this on audible. Possibly the best sci-fi book I've ever read/listened too.

I picked this up and couldn't put it down it was a damned interesting and thoughtful book ; but what was really interesting and caused pause for thought was the fact of time displacement and how society changed; with real concerns people might have today. I think some would be trembling with anxiety about the possibilities of our future and even consider whether what we are told about space travel is valid. As once we leave earth time displacement occurs.

I just read the whole novel cover to cover in about 6 hours. i think the depictions of future earth society are at once terrifying, and very, very likely accurate. one thing that really got to me is the energy currency, which I think will be a firm possibility in the future. I also thought the idea of the "Can" was great. I have to say, the Forever War, and Foundation are my two favorite sci fi books ever written.

I read the book as a teenager when it first came out shortly after the Vietnam war ended so many years ago. Since then I've participated in 8 wars in various roles. It's odd how the title captures a deeper truth: a spiritual war between good and evil. Like all wars this spiritual war will end. I hope it ends soon. I am tired of war.

I am surprized at just how much I enjoyed The Forever War. I first noticed it because I like the book cover and the title, ....I loved the book, and I have other Halderman books on my TBR self. I can't believe that publishers back in the 70's turned it down, saying it wouldn't sell. LOL. It's still selling in 2017.

This book is quit good. At first I didn't know it was a book, I only saw the comics in the library when I was a teenager in the late 80's. They made such an impression, I wanted them for myself. I was past thirty, and looked it up on the internet. The first thing I found was the book. An old secondhand copy. I loved it.

This book is on my bookshelf. I've read it numerous times. It amazes me how accurately it seemed to predict things. You can see how society is already heading in the same direction

Blasted through the book in a week on a Christmas holiday. Suprerb book with combat on par with starship troopers and an even more interesting world (due to more depth gone into it). Simply put it's a master piece

How has this book never been adapted into a movie? Why has this book never been adapted for the screen?

Pray Hollywood never adapts it. They'll screw it up just like Starship Troopers. Roughnecks, a kids cartoon is a more faithful adaptation.
