The only positive thing I see with President Biden stepping down is that Kamala Harris takes over and for the love for Joe will pardon Hunter Biden. While I agree with you that it is probably too late to switch candidate (and that Biden & his administration have mostly done a good to very good job).....the preparation and lead up to that first debate raise questions about his team's basic judgement and strategy. Whether Biden over-ruled their advice, or he was poorly served by their advice, that debate performance also weakened the perception that his team will compensate for any decline he experiences. It was damaging in every single respect.
