I never saw Joe coach, but I do remember his son Lary very well. When I was a tween I got into Arena Football. Being from Detroit, we had the league's first "dynasty" with the Detroit Drive. Team was around from 1988 to 1993 and made the Arena Bowl every year of existence. Won 4 out of 6 including a 3peat from 1988 to 1990. The 2 times they lost, they lost to the Tampa Bay Storm. Lary Kuharich was the Storm's OC in 1991 and their head coach in 1993. Rest In Peace to both.
This video was excellent. I never even knew Joe Kuharich coached at Notre Dame. I only knew about his tenures in the NFL with Washington and Philadelphia. That's why I watch your videos. I learn something new every time.

Kuharich remains the only ND coach to have an overall losing record. HIs whole attitude was, "You win some, you lose some," and he seemed perfectly contect finishing 5-5 every year. One correction: they lost to Iowa in 1960, 28-0. The ending of that Syracuse game in 1961 resulted in the rule that a half cannot end on an accepted defensinve foul being implemented. Little did anyone know that the players he had recruited would come to withiin 93 seconds of a national championship in 1964 under Ara Parseghian. My father remembered going to those November home games in 1962 and seeing a lot of empty seats.
