I used to sing with joe liggins- his original duet singer was a girl named candy rivers. joe played at my friends wedding and i sat in w him. he was impressed that i knew so many of his old songs and all of candy rivers parts. so i started following him around l.a. and singing with him as much as i could. his talent was only surpassed by his warmth and heart -wish joe were still around. he was amazing.
It's so sad that footage of great musicians like Liggins is so rare. His band must have really been something to see in their prime. Still great when this was made. Looks like original sax man Little Willie is in this line-up. Thanks for posting!
Boy, the Honey Dripper. He's a killer, the Honey dripper! I first heard this in about 1946, and it has tumbled through my consciousness like I have been singing it under my breath...off and on....all these years. deralteist
This reached #1 on the R&B (Race Records then) charts 65 years ago this month. The record stayed on top for over 4 months, still unsurpassed by any other song. These cats are hep - crank it up and catch the groove.
which means that his brother Jimmy would be your great uncle....i have records by both of these talented but grossly overlooked, underappreciated artists.....
Thinking those dancers could use a lot more pep in their step!! Maaaaan...could my Nana cut a rug to this stuff!!! Everything but the back flips!! (and that's only because the upright piano in the living room was in the way!! LOL
