Joe Maphis live
Joe Maphis, born Otis W. Maphis (May 12, 1921 - June 27, 1986), was an American country music guitarist. He married singer Rose Lee Maphis in 1953.
One of the flashiest country guitarists of the 1950s and 1960s, Joe Maphis was known as The King of the Strings. He was able to play many stringed instruments with great facility. However, he specialized in dazzling guitar virtuosity.

Even Roy Clark, one of the all time top instrumentalists himself, held Joe Maphis in awe.

Joe was a Major influence in my early pickin days. Always a hero, and by all accounts, a damn decent guy.

I watched Jimmy Dean on ABC TV when it was originally aired. I didn't see any of the Joe Maphis shows, and didn't hear of him until 2017!

Joe is my great grandmother’s cousin. My grandmother sent me some of his music and told me about him. I’m so glad that there’s another guitarist in the family. I might make mistakes when I played and I used to play weddings corporates parties and go around playing some resorts and casino lounges (Losers Lounge in Lauphlin NV,, but I did get a naturally hi amount of facility hopefully from a mutual ancestor of me and joe.

I think that I'm going to make me a big plate of sausage and gravy and biscuits with some scrambled eggs and hashbrowns followed by a hot cup of coffee and a big ole glass of butter milk and listen to this again. Hehehehe

It's astounding how smooth and full his hybrid picking is, including on the Martin bone.

On top of Maphis' guitar prowess, he is not afraid of a volume knob and really showcases the biting tone of the early Mosrite pickups. Even here, his guitar is about 10 years old, being one of the first Mosrites made. A smaller copy was made for a very young Larry Collins while both Maphis and Collins were on "Town Hall Party" out of Compton ( different world, then) during the 1950's.

Joe plays bass, rhythm and melody simultanously like Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. A genuine one-man-band.

A lot of guitarists seem to be in great pain while manhandling their instrument. Joe smiles and enjoy while playing impossibly complicated tunes without gimmicks and effect boxes and pedal to hide behind - which he doesn't need!

Jimmy Dean was an exceptional entertainer with emphasis on "Entertainer". He had a great voice and knew how to work a crowd. But what really stood out to me is that Jimmy always admired and featured the guitar pickers. He gave them the recognition they truly deserved as you see here with 'Joe Maphis'. One of the last performances I saw by Jimmy was on 'Church Street Station' and he featured the late guitar wiz 'Phil Baugh'. See here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t98DG5tIL8Y.html

Speed was only one of the many skills at Joe's disposal. I can guarantee nobody, and I mean nobody, played as fast and clean as Joe Maphis...and no post or pre-production.
