I grew up in the mauer era and he was truly a larger than life character to me, he was the reason I wore #7 in the sports I played. Minnesota legend

Joe Mauer was my favorite player growing up. Watching him suit up to catch in his last game made me cry 😢

I don't think fans dislike Joe or what he brought to the team. The argument comes with where each individual person draws their own line for what's Hall of Fame worthy, whether they prefer peak performance or longevity. No question he was a HOF level player for six years - 06, 08-10, 12 and 13. He hit .327 as a catcher over that 1,000 game span from 06-13, which is amazing. Unfortunately he didn't do anything to add to his case after the age of 30 due to injury. I am surprised at the run he's making at being first ballot. He had an elite six years, but so did Dale Murphy and Don Mattingly. Andruw Jones was THE best defensive centerfielder while averaging 33 HR and 100 RBI for 11 years and he got 7 percent his first year.

I hear ya. I think the biggest thing that gets the older voters attention for Joe over the players you mentioned is because he’s a catcher. Those hitting accolades are expected from other positional players (especially Outfielders), but elite hitting, more so high batting average, among catchers is considered extremely rare and almost unicorn status among those vintage voters…🤷🏽‍♂️

Yeah I think he fits more as a guy who makes it on his last ballot rather than a first ballot guy. His defense was solid for sure and he hit for average but I don’t think he has more than one or two “elite years”. I think first ballot hall of fame should take a bit more than that.

Didn't think this would happen; but good for him. We as fans were too hard on him in the last few years. The fact he was obviously a "clean" player and a catcher it what is pushing him over the top.

Saw Mauer play in the State football playoffs, state basketball tourney, and with the Twins. Saw him hit an inside the park homer in the dome. Great athlete, hope he gets in. Heard he has the highest batting average while catching, than anyone in baseball history. Probably a better hitter with a severe concussion than 90% of the league.

I think one driving influence on the negative public opinion of Joe (which of course wasn't universal) was Tom Barnard and the KQ morning show. They ran with the mama's boy Joe thing.

Mauer was a very very good player and deserves to be in the HOF but not on the first ballot. Killebrew waited forever and Kaat and Oliva never made it in and had to wait for the veterans committee to get in. Puckett was a special case so Carew was the only 1st ballot selection.

Reuse needs 6 cars in 15 yrs. Time?? He’s got money to do shopping. Mayer was a star who kept his mouth shut n did what he could having ailments that chipped at his performance. I think Joe had results but he commanded a hefty salary and that is part of Mauer shining now for the Hall of Fame. What Joe did was legit and without steriods

Only Phil could villainize cousins for answering a direct specific question about a 1st ballot HOF coach by being respectful and paying him a compliment. He doesn’t need to threaten the Vikings, his agent will handle that. Phil not only rides Kirk’s jock for clicks he is oddly obsessed….embarrassing.

Joe and the Twins went 0 and 10 during his career in the Playoffs. He's not a HOF because of that.

The Twins never won a game in the playoffs, much less a series, because their highest paid player did nothing when it counted. Putting him in the same category as the GREAT Kirby Puckett is shameful.
