We have a mathematician instead of a coach. Give me a guy that has a feel for the game than the stat nerd, thinking this is 2K. Sixers took less 3s and dominated exploiting mismatches. We have a thin roster and this guy keeps using the PG to defend bigs all game, top tier bigs at that.

All in all I don’t know if Joe is the right coach for this team. Threes are cool but it’s a low percentage shot. When the shots aren’t falling, and the response is to shoot more threes, it just doesn’t make sense.

@@allamerican7351 More so due to talent than the coaching of Joe Mazulla. We got 3 all stars, 2 former all stars and 6 starter caliber players on the team. If everyone is healthy they should have the best record in the league. The real test will be how they make adjustments when the game plan isn’t working, shots aren’t falling and the stakes are high. Coaching will be more critical in a tight situation.

Banton sucks tbh. Even when Pritchard isnt hitting 3s, he still has a gravity that the opposing defense must always respect. He will always be a positive floorspacer no matter how many shots he misses, and he’s a better playmaker than Banton. Banton will just miss just as many shots, playmake less effectively, not be able to space the floor at all, and not try hard on defense

The thing with Joe that seems off putting is that he is always combative. The thing with him is no matter what he is gonna defend his team against the media. He always defends them. The press makes good points and I’m sure he thinks similar things but he doesn’t need to air out dirty laundry or talk crap about his own players. Joe, considering it's still early in the season, please try using 6'8" PG Dalano Banton and sharpshooter Svi Mykhailiuk with the 2nd unit together with Al Holford and Sam Hauser to allow the starters to rest, and to keep them fresh in the important moments of the 3rd and 4th periods. The extra rest of the starters will enhance their durability for the long season.

Im gonna be honest, I dont think Banton and Svi are very good. Neither of them were really getting offers from other teams, for Svi it was 15th man on the Cs or go to Greece. I think they are both 1-dimensional role players who could have more opportunities on nights where we are missing a few guys to injuries, Lamar Stevens is in a similar boat to them

There are 240 player-mins available each game, the top-6 are always gonna get about 70% of those minutes. Hauser and Pritchard are the next 2 guys who havnt gotten minutes every night, thats like 10-15% of the minutes. And then the last 10-15% of the minutes have been mostly getting split between Kornet and Brissett as the 9th and 10th guys in the rotation. Its not common for any team really to play more than 10 guys regularly in the rotation

He doesnt come off as insecure at all to me. It almost seems like he just has fun bantering in general. Personally I think its great. Sometimes reporters ask questions thinking there is a simple solution/fix to them, and usually the answer is a whole lot more complicated than what people like to frame it as. And when Joe breaks it down and goes into, you get a window of how much work these guys really do behind the scenes

No one “executes well” for a 100% of the game. There will always be mistakes, turnovers, mis-reads, etc… And the Cs did make plenty of mistakes tonight. But they also just missed a ton of open shots that were open because of good process/execution. Like KPs 3 to tie the game, he missed it yeah, but that was an amazing look and great execution to get that shot that open. Just sometimes the ball doesnt go in as much as we want

Yeah but 42 3s taken in 2016 is more of an outlier than 47 3s taken in 2023. Today its common for teams to shoot 45-50 3s a game. 7 years ago, it was rare for teams to even get to 40 3s a game (outside of the Warriors)

In the JJ Redick podcast, Joe says that he studies momentum and bases his timeout strategy off of that. He also has shown that he cares more about analytics in his coaching method. I’m sorry, but as great of a scholar this man might be, the greatest coaches have a feel for the game, too. Maybe they know because they played in the NBA. I love stats and data, but if you only stick to analytics throughout the course of a game, you become predictable. Hoping this man can finally figure out some balance

He was talking about the 2016 game referenced in the article. He was making a point that the offense scored 117 points yet the lack defense wasn’t the reason they lost. He’s being a tad condescending.

He's defensive arrogant and at the end of the day full of sh*t. Pressers like this CONFIRM my belief that this guy will never rise above mediocrity and will only have the ghost of a chance if winning if the players are SO overwhelmingly good that they can win even without competent coaching. He's got a lot to learn, he's too locked in to his theories of basketball to adjust to the strengths and weaknesses of his players can't take constructive criticism too busy defending himself to change and grow. And btw even his intellectual theories and defenses don't hold water "you said we take too many threes well you said that seven years ago AND WE ONLY TAKE A FEW MORE NOW and you're still saying it. Great rebuttal Joe. " and how come you're not talking about defense ". Yeah we were all talking about that last year too Joe. "Well if we just execute we'll win" execute WHAT Joe. You mean if we just hit 40% of our threes we win and if we don't we lose. Guess what - that's not a game plan for winning basketball unless maybe you have Steph Curry and Klay Thompson on your team that makes you a .500 team. What's your backup when they ain't falling? Defense post play half court offense? Uhhhhh.... execute. Execute what? Uhhh... defense move the ball. Thus guy is a b.s. artist and has too many ppl fooled. Can't wait till we move on from this clown. He's already had more of a chance than he deserved should have been fired last year should be fired even if we win but the players and assistant coaches might bail him out if he can just get out of the way enough

Mazzula needs to not worry about media, reading articles from 2016?? He has that much time? Just coach and worry about your players and team Joe. " If you hold a team to 25 point quarters you have a 17% chance of winning and if you hook up the jigawatz that's pushes it to 21% and blah blah blah" get out of the analytics so much, they have a place but to me when you have a special player in any sport throw the analytics away. Think analytics apply to Brady or Steph curry or any other greats?

And with his little giggle and snicker MAZZULA was waiting for that question about 3s, he snickered like some villain in a comic book movie "heheh yes asks me about shooting 3s , fall right into my trap hehe yes heheh"

@@chadbinette3201 when you're a coach in a league fueled by the media and its members, I imagine articles from 2016 and even older pop up quite normally. Its quite normal for coaches to read old articles of writers that they'll interact with nightly to get a better idea of how to not only answer their questions but build an ongoing relationship. Have you never seen Pop chide a reporter? This is why. Yes, as regular day joe's (no pun intended) we may not understand the logic, but truthfully, any business is about building morale with its partners and customers. Think of your job. As I said previously, the NBA relies heavily on the media and thus, they'd be wise to do as much research on them as possible.

I'm trying really hard to envision this Kermit the frog ah napoleon taking us to and winning the finals but Gosh.,, I can't imagine the players liking and buying in to this over analytical stats driven bball..Winning is effort and cohesion..not to mention our bench seems too "clean" PP supposed to be a dawg but playing like a puppy and KP and Jrue are Great but the Jay's still gotta win and close games and I don't think they got it in em' and their leader is a Cornball who should be at the end of the bench and only speak when someone wants a Stat 🤷🏾

He still is the best playmaker off the bench by far, sneakily maybe the best offensive rebounder (between him and Oshae), and no matter how many shots he is missing he still has a massively positive effect on the floor’s spacing just by standing there

And if we do...Joe has not placed anybody else in. I see the same guys going in. Mark my words...unless that bench gets fixed ANOTHER LOSING YEAR. FACTS!!!

@@PaM07675Because anyone with a functioning pair of eyes and brain knows Brad is way ahead of Joe in terms of coaching ability. He was one of the best ATO guys and had won Celtics many games because of his plays. Mazulla on the other hand hardly ever calls timeouts, doesn't draw plays and has non existent offensive scheme. I don't know what made Brad think he was the right fit to be the head coach of this team but I've seen enough to know he's not experienced nor competent enough to lead them to a championship.

@@PaM07675nope. Brad decided to give him a try there was nobody else ready or willing within the organization to step in. He was looking for as much continuity as possible. The other assistants had other plans or possibly were loyal to Ime and had mixed feelings about stepping into his shoes under these circumstances. Not Joe - this was his chance to show em that his high opinion of himself was justified ( even though its actually a cover for his insecurity- hes a coaching assistant with little experience and very little feel for his players but he puts on this show like hes the Einstein of basketball. He's not ready for prime time, proved it last year, and Brad doesn't want to change coaches again so quickly so hes babysitting Mazulla with as many grown ups as possible and little Joe kinda knows if he doesnt listen and doesnt win and i mean win it all nothing less, hes used up his chances so he pretends to be humble and pretends to be teachable - but NOT WITH REPORTERS his true colors show and this is why at the end of the day he wont change he still thinks he knkws better than anybody else. HES NOT SMART he just talks a good game. His live and die by the three offensive strategy is wrong for this team if they want to go all the way, he doesn't know how to use hls players to their best advantage- didn't last year and won't this year either unless Cassell and Lee cover up for him. He's a loser a mediocre basketball mind with no aptitude for defense, half court offensive schemes, substitutions, or player motivation. The only way the Celtics win is if they coach themselves they gotta trust themselves more than their coach. Mazulla messed up coaching last years team - now he's got a team closer to what he wants and bonus they got rid of the one guy who was showing him up in timeouts but I have no confidence he'll get the best out of these guys either, my best hope is that they'll ignore him listen to Sam and figure it out for themselves because there's no help from the head coach hes along for the ride and acting smart in oress conferences
