Introducing THE MASTERS, a new docuseries presented by AdoramaTV.
Step into the studio with some of the world’s most accomplished photographers. They’re sharing the unique methods, mediums, and tools they use as they push themselves-and the practice of photography-beyond the limits. Here’s what it takes to achieve mastery.
When does someone become a Master?
Is it the amount of time spent on the craft or the success you achieved with it?
In this ADORAMA original series, we'll travel through the United States and discover people who spent countless hours perfecting their craft and finding their own voice, because being a Master today means recognizing that voice and inspiring people to find their own.
Joe McNally is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose career has spanned 30 years and included assignments in over 50 countries. He has shot cover stories for TIME, Newsweek, Fortune, New York, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and Men's Journal. He has been at various times in his career a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, a staff photographer at LIFE, and currently, an ongoing 23-year contributor to National Geographic, shooting numerous cover stories for those publications.
Joe was listed by American Photo as one of the 100 Most Important People in Photography and described by the magazine as "perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today". He has been honored as a member of Kodak-PDN Legends Online, as well as being a Nikon Legend Behind the Lens. In 2010, he was voted as one of the 30 most influential photographers of the decade in an industry-wide Photo District News survey. He is also an educator and keynote speaker.

I have been an amateur photographer for at least 30 years. But my main goal had been putting food on my table so, I had a job for that purpose. Now, I am retired and trying to catch up with photography, but there's only so much I have been able to do in terms of equipment, But when I see work from people colaborating with Adorama, my engine gets a sudden trottle up and my drems of achieving something, at least a resamblance of those works of art grow wings and fly again. Thank you so much.

The first photographer I learned from, especially strobe photography, also the first photography books I bought were Joe's. He had some of the most educative RU-vid videos too. Always an inspiration and still going strong. thank you, sir.

Great video about a great photographer. While McNally says, in this video, that his "style" is hard to describe as he reflects the assignment, I would say there are common themes that together make me guess beyond "chance" that an image is his. Technical perfection. Great lighting. No messing with palette (cf. a painter's palette). And often there's a snapshot aspect that seems accidental but of which serious photographer know they're not. If you are an old school photographer, then you'll remember that one type of color film had different character than another. As McNally mentions "Kodachrome" and NatGeo, I would have selected that for a documentary shoot of the Masai in Africa, but the original green box Fujichrome to shoot the desa (terraced rice farms) in Indonesia. In tint, or feel, McNally's digital era photography over 90% reminds me of Kodacolor II. Not Kodachrome, not Ektachrome, etc. And that has become a connecting theme as well.

Excelente video. Me quito el sombrero ante este maestro
