Great interview! I must admit when I heard Joe say in this interview that when he went to the Chiefs, they had these little speedy wide receivers who were outrunning his arm, that made me smile. Willie Davis and I ran 4.3 in the forty and got up the field fast. I specifically remember a conversation about this during the first week of practice. Joe told us he was not used to our speed and had to get the ball out faster. He underthrew us a lot initially, but then he figured it out. Such a privilege to play with him.

Dude, longtime Chiefs fan.......loved the JJ Birdens, Willie Davis's, Derrick Walkers, Lake Dawsons.........combined with that defense, those were some great, great teams. As much as I love the Chiefs success the last 5 years, there is a part of me that will always miss the Chiefs of the 90's.

The goat. Montana only played in 4 super bowl. Because the entire 80s were nfc champ games being the real super bowl. Hard to think Brady could have won 4 on the niners in the 80s. Brady would have been life flighted after his 3rd year. No comparison. Brady is 2nd best sure. But he's not 4-0 with 13 tds and 0 ints in the big one. Montana is Jordan. Brady is leBron. Go to a bunch of Champs but also lose alot of them. Also. montana was always the best qb during his era. Brady maybe had 2 years of being the best qb in the league. Manning, Favre, Warner, Rodgers, mahomes. Most Years there were better qbs , even if the patd d won him superbowls. From 81-91, Montana was clear best qb .in reg season and playoffs. Marino in 84 is maybe the only year he wasn't the clear top qb. Brady 07 and 2014 were the only years he was top qb. Also bellichek Def was how Brady won alot. plus Vinatieri. Bellichek Def was almost the only d that could beat. Montana. Brady won 2 superbowls genuinely. The other 5 were defense /kicker carrying him. Doesnt negate his greatness, but he's just not as good or clutch as Montana. Brady #2

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for a memorable encounter I had during my first 49ers game in 1987 against the Chargers at Candlestick Park. Embarking on the Dutch courage, I impulsively ventured to the very first row of the stadium during your warm-up. To my surprise, instead of reprimanding me, you graciously invited me to join you and led me to your family's seating area. Your wife, daughters, and mother extended their warmth, making me feel like an honorary member of the Montana family. Throughout the game, your family's kindness continued, with high fives exchanged every time you scored a touchdown. This experience left an indelible mark on me, and I wanted to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation. Having recently watched an interview featuring you, I felt compelled to extend my gratitude once again. Your generosity and kindness have etched a lasting memory, and I remain grateful for that unforgettable day. Thank for exemplifying not only greatness on the field but also genuine warmth and hospitality off it. Kind regards, A Proud 49ers Fan

Met joe montana by accident when living/working in SF. Saw a family friend of mine speaking to someone at a lunch table. could only see the back of the other guy's head. So I go up to my family friend to say hi as I'm heading back into my office and for a minute I'm just talking to my family friend and he says Ryan I want to introduce you to Joe. I turn and realized I just cold shouldered joe montana for a minute. He says hi I'm joe, I stutter out something about oh my god nice to meet you mr. montana. he says call me joe. I look at my family friend and Joe can tell I'm like "why are you talking to joe montana rn..." Joe realizes and just says, I'm getting investment advice from Bunny (bunny was our family friend's nickname) and learning from the legend. Dude was so humble he was calling my family friend a legend while literally being the GOAT (or pre brady GOAT) and im sitting there trying not to pee my pants with excitement. Just amazed at how chill he was... What a down to earth, normal, awesome human being. If you read this far, i dont really have a message other than what you see is what you get with Joe

I was with 4 friends at a bar in Santa Rosa California about a decade plus ago and Joe walked in. His ranch was up the road a few miles. Was mid-afternoon so was pretty quiet in the place except for a few others than our group. He basically joined in our bar chatter for an hour like he was just another dude. He might be a football legend, but for an hour with us he was just one of the guys. I also sat next to Keena Turner in that bar a different day. Same thing, just one of the guys. You describe them both perfectly, "down to earth, normal, and awesome", i'd add gracious as well. Thanks for your post, brought back some wonderful memories. Cheers

It was an excellent interview with Joe Cool. Good to finally hear him open up about that complicated and unfortunate transition when George Seifert chose to go with Steve Young instead of bringing back Montana. Made me smile when he honestly said "Im not going to be Steve's backup, I'm better than him." I love Steve Young, but it broke every 49er fan's heart the way that team kicked Joe out and forgot that he was the reason the Niners even became a dynasty. I still supported Montana on Kansas City but it just wasn't the same.

it's good to see guys from his generation talk about how it was back then... People just don't realize how harder football was and the level of ability these guys had to have to be able to do and accomplish what they did. These guys were OCs at the field, they knew more than coordinators know today. I don't think we'll see anyone be undefeated with 4 SBs again, ever. Montana is a master and to me he's second only to Young, because Young had the pressure to get into those humongous freaking shoes whenever the team needed him... and retired with the greatest passer rating of all time. I love Joe...but people forget the only reason the 49ers moved on from Joe was because he was getting hurt a lot. Young was special for us too, totally different styles of QB, but Brock reminds me of him more than Young because he can do simular things but he has athletic ability that Joe didn't have, but Joe could move too, but injuries took away a lot from him. Still amazing QB and I hope as a 9ers lifelong, diehard fan that Brock becomes his own star on this team.

I totally agree with your assessment, but we can't act like Montana was soft... even a bit. Remember, Lt's hit on Thiesman didn't even draw a flag. Those boys got put in a meat grinder every sunday, it was a different era, and QB's were those choice cuts. Brock might be that guy, but we will see...

It wasn’t that he was getting hurt, but he was out for nearly 2 seasons… all of 1991, most of 1992. In that time, Steve Young became the best QB in football. It was a tough situation, but it was the obvious decision.

Like Rice, he was a great receiver, very talented at avoiding a tackle, and a super good sportsman. That Monday night game with the Rams, the 49ers were gonna lose that game, until John's two 90 + yard TD catches happened. THAT my friend, was super amazing. And YES, he;s hall of fame material. I seen this picture somewhere, of you three on the side line, on the bench, you were in the middle, Jerry on one side, John on the other. A picture worth framing, I say. Joe, I am no one to anyone, but meeting you would be on my bucket list. I've gotta tell this story. In 1981, I was 15. And I badly wanted to see some of these no name teams rise up and start winning. I seen the 49ers go to Pittsburgh, and BEAT Terry Bradshall and the Steelers mid season. THAT impressed me. I was a fan from that day on, and NOT disappointed. Also, a little shout out to Mike Wilson, backup, 3rd or 4th WR........he'd been there for ya all those years. We don;t see or hear much from him, but he seemed like a great sportsman, great guy. Thank you all. Barrry

I was 10 when I met Joe at Ventures in KC. He was supposed to be signing items, but his injury prevented him from doing so. It was an awesome moment for a 10yo kid. Still wish I could have gotten my card signed those 30 years ago, but that's life. I know he's rooting for SF, but go Chiefs.

Joe gives me a warm inspiration, I played with him so much in TECMO BOWL. lol when the other kids wanted me to play any other team I usually go home. That's when the other kids picked up I was obsessed with San Fran and some even asked why. The logo. the logo displayed a strong. message: (Strong Force)

I had a huge crush on Joe Montana when I was a young girl in the 80s. And it was so innocent: I was just floored by his energy and charisma and that basically he could command his incredible team (in my mind) to do such amazing things. Good to see he's such a down to earth person and the celebrity and physical demands of the game didn't ruin that.

"In the Super Bowl the key to the game is that Brock Purdy doesn't have to be the best quarterback that Sunday but in the end does Brock Purdy's quarterbacking make the San Francisco 49ers the better team"- Ramon Johnson, former broadcaster for the San Jose State University Spartans...

I’ve never seen any better film and footwork still today than the Greatest of All Time Joe Montana. He was absolutely incredible and a surgeon with the football. The grace, the touch, the timing. All in such a brutal era. Was grateful to say Joe and Dwight held me as a baby in 85’ during the Dynasty Days. No one more humble and a class act than the great “Joe Cool” aka JOE 3 : 1 6.

Played when they had to deliver the throw knowing they were going to get hit and not get bailed out by these new “roughing the passer” penalties. QB’s in today’s game know they can’t get hit low or get in the head, that wasn’t the case in Joe’s day they had to take the hit and still deliver the throws.

@@YuckFouTube2 For sure, I'm amazed at how much teams throw over the middle now, especially the 49ers. When Ronnie Lott and that defense roamed the field, teams rarely threw over the middle.

As a kid I would always watch the video they put together for the 1988 49er season. They faced more adversity than our current team, finished 10-6 but they figured it out postseason. Hope we get the same result
