Joe & Raanan are taking fan questions in this episode. They talk Seinfeld, Earliest movie experiences, Adam McKay, The Schindler's List fiasco and much more. It's a fun one. Enjoy!!
I remember from the episode with Louis, Raanan said his favorite movie critic was Pauline Kael. So I looked her up, and her wikipedia says, “Kael's opinions often ran contrary to those of her contemporaries” lol
This is my favorite podcast and has given me a deeper appreciation of film. I love Raanan and even if I don’t agree with his takes they are still hilarious. Keep it up fellas.
You guys have to read Chaos instead of Helter Skelter. Chaos debunks the entire Helter Skelter narrative and exposes Vincent Bugliosi as a total fraud. Tarantino cited it as a major influence for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood the book. He talks about it on his JRE episode.
@@thiseveningwith that's a disingenuous remark. Theres a difference in having a different opinion at times or being the guy that shits on everything and always going against the grain, Just because. Raanan reminds me of the latter.
I've really come to appreciate this podcast. Joe, for being funny, sticking it to Raanan when he gets out of line, and Raanan, for having bad opinions and being dumb so that Joe can stick it to him.
I would love to hear more in depth discussions about Seinfeld! I never thought about what Joe was saying before about how it got more absurd and sketch-like when Larry left.
You guys are half right. -Complaints about Temple of Doom and Gremlins led to the creation of the PG-13, but they were released as PG. -The Flamingo Kid was the first movie rated PG-13. However, it's release was delayed, so: -Red Dawn was the movie released that had a PG-13 rating
Glad Joe realized Raanan might NOT be fully paying attention when watching movies...Bc it's been noticeable by way he focuses so much time on non-intricate aspects of a 1.5/hr movie. Also, he quickly sums up movies based on one line of dialog or if race/gender isn't presented to him comfortably.
Damn! Just when I was thinking whether you guys would like Drive, you say it sucks. I’m surprised you even liked It Follows. It would be great to hear talk more about both of those!
@@TalkingThrones I agree that Drive is better, but I liked the first 3/4 of It Follows. It had an interesting new gimmick for a horror movie, cool style and music, but it seemed to abandon its own rules near the end, which was frustrating. It also wasn’t that scary.
Anyone else slam their pause button when Joe mentions "Look Who's Talking" as a candidate for Underrated Jerkoff Scenes? So glad he gave an explainer, Ranaan's shock was mine.
Soo raanan was going tho it at the end of the pod. His thoughts on being a kid had him near tears. Dude mentioned being depressed earlier in the pod too. Hope your good bud
Ranaan is completely out of control. Joe List. Listen to me. Wrangle him in. Ranaan is living on the 9th floor of a 7 story building and it needs to stop.
Hi Joe, as you ramp up the YT numbers before the special I would suggest putting the Joe n R stuff in its own playlist, possibly MMJ as well. Lovvvve the QnA eps btw. South Shore 👊
You're judging Deathproof incorrectly. It is meant to be watched as a part of "Grindhouse," where it is the second of a double feature with Planet Terror and fake trailers in-between. The longer cut of Deathproof that came out separately on DVD is a vastly inferior experience. You can see the theatrical Grindhouse experience on the Blu-ray.
Joe doesn't like Danny McBride? What the fuck is wrong with this guy? Eastbound and Down is one of the funniest shows of all time. Man, the takes just keep getting worse and worse. Another thing. I've come to realize that both of these guys are just anti-aesthetics. They can't appreciate any movie that is just cool for the sake of being cool. Everything has to be people constantly yapping emotionally about their lives and shit. Give me cool lighting and Ryan Gosling in a silent film bashing people's heads open with a hammer all day. It is an art film by an autuer with a unique aesthetic perspective. They have the taste of lesbians.
Thinking of Raanans' 5D experience as a kid I watched Matinee with John Goodman and really enjoyed it but I don't think it would stand the test of time like The Sandlot Kids (UK title). The talk of PG 13 etc made think of one of the times my brother and I would go to our father's house on a Saturday. Sometimes he'd be doing work on his house so we'd watch a movie. A Nightmare On Elm St had recently been released on VHS and as I was 7 and my brother was 9 dear old dad showed off his technical skills. He'd recorded the audio from the VHS direct to a cassette deck and me and me bro listened to it.
@@JoeListComedy now that's a true friend right there . There's a fantastic 3 part analysis of sideways on RU-vid . I'll put the link here . It's awesome how that movie has so much subtle symbolism in it . And also watch " Crumb " documentary so much great music in that one , and also american splendor . Love the jazz music intro of that movie , and of course paul giamatti is the man
I saw drive when it came out in theaters. Went to the dollar movies actually and If it wasn't for the sound track it would been a dollar too much. All "mood" no substance.
People should study this episode to understand how they could be wrong about every single opinion 100% of the time. Every movie they say is bad is good, every movie they say is good is bad. It's quite an accomplishment
Ranaan's right in the past fast forward was the special effects , just like coffee and cigarettes by jarmush when steven wright talks about drinking coffee and dreamin fast
When Raanan said that he was in bed with a woman and he liked it so much when she said his name, "Rahhnaann." Joe said, "Are you sure she wasn't saying that she was gonna run on home?" hahahaha lol you know what I mean
It just goes to show you how subjective people's opinions of movies are. Drive is one of my favorite movies, but Nicolas Winding Refn has a style that I guess some aren't going to like.
I like listening to this pod but the zoom call makes it hard for me to watch :( I wish u guys could be in the same room! If u didn't do zoom I would watch every episode. Rn I watch 1/5
I was mad that Ranan can’t just enjoy a movie like the big short and he pretentiously talked down about it, then be immediately started praising the campaign and I remembered he just has terrible taste. I saw both when I was about 12 or 13 years old, I definitely learned more from the big short.
Huge fan guys, where can I submit some questions, besides Twitter? I’m always left wishing the episodes were longer. If you do a foreign film, check out “My Night at Maud's”, by Eric Rohmer. I know Gene Hackman slams Rohmer in “Night Moves”, but I’m a fan 😅
Have you guys talked about Inherent Vice more? Its insane to me that Louis said it just "went past him", I just watched it and it was good as fuck Thought edit: Its more like a thomas pynchon movie than a paul thomas anderson movie
That's the issue. PTA was too loyal to the novel and as a result, it removed a lot of the cinematic elements. A large portion of that film is far too expositional.
Yeah, he's hilarious. Quite off-topic, but this question got me thinking....do Mark and Joe like South Park? Only ever hear them mention The Simpsons and Family Guy.
@@thewalkingdunning-krugeref9664 mark is kind of a comedy sociopath and will just say shit to say it but if you pull all that away he has copped to liking early South Park.
Did Joe say he doesn't find Danny McBride funny?? Eastbound and down isn't hilariously funny? Righteous Gemstones not funny either?? Does anyone agree with this???
Adam McKay did some funny shit for SNL, made some successful movies that won't last, and is now in the throes of full-fledged ideological fervor. He's a socialist who can't help but be political and didactic...at the expense of being funny...
Maybe this isn't trendy anymore but I still am firmly in the camp of Ranaan has terrible movie opinions. He has a very specific thing he wants all movies to be and if they aren't he thinks they are failing to be that, rather than succeeding at something else. He's like a guy who listens to the Ramones and complains there are no guitar solos. Or listens to rap and thinks the vocals are a little flat. Joe should watch the Sopranos...
Let's just say I agree with what you said(I kinda do but also don't really I just get what you mean) That's where we get all this awesome back and forth from between these two. It's awesome bro that's why you're watchin.
Their imperfect opinions and flawed worldview make it perfect. Joe try Succession its amazing. I know you don't like television per se but it feels like a great film broken up into many parts.
@@bp4861 @BrickTop06 Well yeah, movie-youtube kind of imploded a few years ago and I have been desperate for a show like this. Red Letter Media's still around and I like them but I need something a little less ironic sometimes. Yeah, this show is great. Not saying it's not. Of course it's great. I think because they're comedians and not 2 film school d-bags make it way better than similar shows I've tried to listen to from film school d-bags. These guys do know about movies so it's not like any comedian would be good at this but the fact that they do know about movies and then being comedians allows them to check eachother if they get corny or pretentious makes this maybe the best film discussion show out there, which is funny because every film school guy makes a youtube channel to teach us all about film and its unbearable, the discussion ones like this I mean, some where they actually put a lot of work into editing videos and so forth are pretty good. But anyway, yeah, I was just f*ckin around, of course its good.
Spoiler alert: The car crash ruins Whiplash. It’s never revisited. He never has to pay for it. It would have been a great ending had he used the car crash to leverage a head injury excuse to stay in school. Shit movie.
Movie sucks generally; none of it makes sense. It would have to be set in the 50s for the teacher to get away with a fraction of the shit he pulls, including the sabotage at the end, which is only succesful because of how much of a pussy the main guy is
I think "Death Proof" is proof Tarantino love's the smell of his own booger sugar fart's. It's a short film padded with exhausting dialog. Nice to see Kurt Russell again, but ultimately just a drunk thought of "Let's shoot it here in our favorite bar!, hey Mary Winstead is hot, maybe if I put her in one of my movies she will let me smell her feet"
Do you have to have fought in the civil war to have a good opinion about civil war movie? What a horribly dumb take this is. We’re talking about movies not drumming. Don’t ever share your feelings on Braveheart if you’re not a sword fighter.
My god so many awful takes in this episode. Rannan said whiplash was bad with no soul. Sorry to brother was great, drive is already cult classic. This why I hate film criticism, no objectivity just weird subjective biases. Rananan is the worst
I do sometimes wonder if it's a bit. It's ok though, if you grab any old Joe and Ranaan off the street they're gonna have random opinions and these fellas are no different.
Overall; the foot doctor, personally; the cocaine using caltholic boi and besides the J Park, Jaws, and my phone home homie - not a fan of the jew worshiper.
