Russian/Soviet tech stopped being on a similar level with Western tech since the mid 60s when USSR lost the semiconductor and computing race due to a lack of expertise and classic soviet bureaucracy which lead to constant sabotage towards the Kyiv institute for computing whcih made the most progressin sovietcomputing. And in the 90s another blow came when Ukraine became independent and Russia lost Kharkiv, it's research documentation and it's engineers. You're super right man. When violence starts to get real, it really is an overwhelming feeling. Similar to your reenactment experience, if you ever see a street fight go way to far in public, that shit will haunt you. In the moment most people don't know what to do besides watch stunned or in fear or run. A friend of mine was in a gang years back that would get into these horrible fights with other gangs, often involving knives and bats. He has PTSD just as bad as any military soldier you're liable to meet. Like full on night terrors and flashbacks, etc...
I never realized how horrifying it could be as a sniper to see your enemy die until I read “Marine Sniper”. It tells the story of Carlos Hathcock’s experience in Vietnam. There was a time where he had to shoot a young Vietcong boy because he started firing at him. There was another time where he shot an elderly Vietnamese man who was forced by the Vietcong to fire rounds at his base. After he shot the man he saw his body twitch violently until he stopped.
