Does alien life exist in the universe or are we all there is?
@TonyMountjoy
@TonyMountjoy 27 дней назад
Someone smarter than me once said give or take "If we're all the life there is in the Universe then that'd be a pretty big waste of space".

The galactic center may be a busy place. If life is extremely rare, maybe there's one space-exploring civilization per galaxy.

I believe life is a process whose seeds are rooted in the organic chemistry found the afterglow of super novae. These organic compounds saturate the planetary discs of evolving star systems and organize themselves into life when the conditions are conducive to the formation of complex biochemical structure. So, yes. I think the Universe is teeming with all kinds of life.

All of those reasons that you listed as for why earth is such a special planet for life to form could also be why other civilizations would want to come here. Maybe there are actually a few planets where conditions were even more favorable for life than here on Earth? As big as the universe is, I'm sure there's at least a couple that are better than Earth. Or are we no.1? lol

The earth is roughly 8,000 miles in diameter ( it is not a precise sphere but is spheroid ). The earth’s crust is about 15 miles thick and the inhabited atmosphere about 15 miles thick. The deepest ocean trenches are about 5 mile deep and the highest mountains about 5 miles high. Life can exist in the trenches and even on the mountains but at those extremes is vanishingly rare. Life primarily inhabits about 5 miles above or below sea level. Yet even here nearly all life is within a mile above or below sea level. Of that area most life exists within a few hundred feet of sea level. The oceans cover 2/3rds of the surface of the earth and almost no life exists above that sea level. Out of all the area and therefore out of all the mass of the earth life is so little material matter as to be almost nonexistent. The volume of matter which is life could vanish and it would matter little as to the mass of the earth. What ever you believe was the origin of life given experiments of Louis Pasteur and all the research into abiogenesis life only began to exist once on this planet. So whether you believe the earth to be 4 billion years old or 6,000 Years old life has never been seen to spontaneously occur presently or anytime in the recorded history of humans. Therefore whatever timeline once is the amount of occurrences of the beginning of life on earth and the amount of material that exists as life is nearly nonexistent. Life is so rare as a material and in time its existence so rare that the cause and conditions are so rare as to be considered nonexistent. Life is not ubiquitous on earth. Life is not ubiquitous in the universe. The conditions and time limits required for the existence of life are more fine tuned than any known constant. The presumption that life is ubiquitous in the universe simply given the amount of stars, galaxies, and assumptions of number of planets, is a dissonant conflation because life is, as a percentage of material and time, even on the one planet we know life exists on, a fleetingly rare occurrence as to be of practically nonexistent. Yet, despite these facts we exist. The vast majority of the universe is not conducive for life. The vast majority of time and conditions possible for materials to exist are not obviously conducive for life. Given the above even in the present circumstances of the existence of life on this planet nearly non of the materials that exist on the planet are DNA, lipids, or proteins. We cannot take a bottle of “life” chemicals and create life, much less have it occur spontaneously. We cannot create lipids, DNA or proteins, the building blocks of life, much less have them occur spontaneously. Thus the time and conditions but also the chemistry is unknown to us. The amount of chemistry that is life today is therefore so rare that it cannot be duplicated in a laboratory. Chiral forms of the chemistry of life is a puzzle of life we don’t understand. No life has ever been created from chemistry in a laboratory. No life has been restored to cells already dead. If you think we know nearly everything you’re about as correct as a percentage as the time conditions and the percentage of material that are life. To consider that the nothingness that is a Random quantum fluctuation , a Rogue wave , and the resulting entropy, set the conditions ( which we clearly do not understand) to create life once and only once on a speck of dust relatively that is the earth, with as little matter of that speck as to be nearly nonexistent even on that speck to the point that all humans and all the intelligence of all humans ever to have existed could not figure out , understand or create life from that knowledge. Nothingness as a rogue wave more intelligent than all humans ever. To think that nothingness accidentally created everything and the conditions so precise that the most intelligent creatures of its creation are not capable of duplicating that accident is as credulous as any thought ever thought. If you know that little might you not be incorrect?

the large number hypothesis isn't a fallacy. it is a statistical forecast. it doesn't mean there DEFINITELY is, but as space increases and time increases, with sufficient randomness and potential for interaction between matter, so do the number of iterations, and as the number of random iterations of reality that occur increases, the higher the likelihood that one of those random events IS another thing similar to humans or whatever life. it is emergence in complex systems. literally one of the fundamental reasons why neural nets and unsupervised machine learning works (and, in turn, how emergence may work in any sufficiently complex system).

He said he could see some people had a human-lizard appearance, but cloaked in some way for most people. Like I said, this guy was not a bit into woo, and was years ahead of his time. (He told me string theory was bunk fifteen years ago, and they're just now realizing it.)

What if one is not religious at all? I just feel that religion can sometimes cloud one's thinking. Not saying religion is a "bad thing" in any way...just that we've come a long way since Galileo's day.
@theomnisthour6400
@theomnisthour6400 27 дней назад
You don't have to be religious to understand the eternal spiritual battle between God and the adversary. You only need to believe in order and entropy, and extrapolate to the cultural entropy cult that is destroying humanity from within today. Then, unless you're evil or a nihilist, you'll start rooting for a real Messiah to extend the boundaries of creation, as was just demonstrated when the Big Bang was overwritten by a new version of time-space

Humans ascribe meaning. So yes, humans are the most important thing in the universe. We are its meaning, its purpose, its intent. Until we meet another like ourselves with their own pocket of meaning, it would be then that we find meaning together. So.. while we wait, it is acceptable to assume we are the only game in town. It has nothing to do with ego or hubris of any kind. The majority of humanity would accept being alone or crowded equally well. People live on volcanoes that occasionally erupt and kill nearly everyone. Yet we keep doing it. See my point? Humans are weird and adaptive. Fine alone, fine in a crowd. Always curious.

we as humans give too much credit to our brains, that something "feels" inconceivable as that we may be unique, doesn't mean anything, reality doesn't "care" if our puny brains can make sense of it. We can believe that life "have to exists somewhere else" or not believe that, but in both cases is just a believe; is possible?, is conceivable? yea, just as is possible that tomorrow or next year we go extinct for some unforeseen reason, I'll still keep my savings tho.

The large number which is significant is that which represents the sum of possible configurations all atoms that exist will take and have taken until a heat-death finds stable entropy. This number may not exist and the universe and everything which exists does so infinitely, in which case the answer to "Are Aliens Among Us?" can only be "Of course" but this also necessitates reconciling with the fact that every possibility which may exist must then inevitably do so. The utility in knowing if we exist here without analog, or as organisms which are unlikey to encounter recognizable advanced intelligent creatures bound by spacetime defies a way to validate any moment being an irreducible impetus and rejects any sort of qualified effort. S.Carrol gives credence to notions which conceive our presence in the material world as particle-formations suspended in perpetual motion guided by probability waves collapsing.
