I got my blue belt in 2002 and quit in 2003. I am currently 41 years old. The pandemic gave me the motivation and time to start backup. I have been doing it 3-4 days a week for the last 13 months. I still have a way to go for my purple. Now I don't even care about the ranking. I just love the activity and doing cool things. I got the basic hip bump, roll mount reversal on a pretty good blue belt today. I don't think that has worked on him in years. He was quit surprised. That was my win for the day.

Started 7 months ago at 59 and chubby. One of my grandsons was spending the summer with us and had been bullied at school, so I took him and we went together for a couple months until he went home. I’m addicted and still going. I am the oldest guy at this Gracie school. I love all my buddies there and I go 3-4 days a week. I am a nail amongst many hammers, but someday ! 😉 My grandson went home and a different bully started in on him. He’s 11 and quiet and took all he could take and finally took the kid to the ground, got in side control, and held him there until teachers arrived….bully was crying when teachers arrived. Jake just did exactly as he had been instructed. He hopes someday to be a red belt like Relson, who he got to meet at our school. Life changing !

I have been in LE for only 3 years. Last summer I got a new assignment and really fell off the wagon, wasn't exercising. I strained my back about 2 months ago... don't know how. It wore off after about 6 weeks. Once it healed up I started working out again.. was going good for two weeks, I was pain free besides normal muscle soreness. I decided to start BJJ as well, and on my first class less than a week ago, I strained the same muscles in my back. Didn't know it until the next morning. Can barely sit down for a minute, can barely breathe when I'm standing up or doing certain movements. It is worse than before. Ibuprofen won't touch the pain. It's really disheartening. I watch these videos and I want so badly to train. I was as humbled as I was hooked after the first session. I'm honestly afraid to show my face at my bjj gym because it's been 5 days since my first class and I haven't shown my face. I am probably gonna go this weekend just to watch and explain to my coaches why I haven't come, and why I am not training, just to show I am very much still dedicated. I'm basically just venting my personal struggle here. I know my back can heal but it took so long after the first strain, I don't want to wait months to continue. At the same time, I'm afraid of being in an endless cycle. I don't know whether to try to overcome the pain, or if I need to wait till I'm pain free for a really long time to continue.

The same thing has been happening to me my whole jujitsu career. I started when I was 5, I went every day for a long time. until my father decided to let me take a break so I wouldn't get burnt out. It's been a long while since then but the break was probably around 2 weeks. Before I took the break I was one of the best in my gym for my age group, despite that, I still remember feeling constant anxiety and sorrow. Of course, there were still great times and it was a great period in my life. But after this break, I was even more anxious and scared when coming back and that eventually led to more breaks, longer breaks, and more anxiety and more stress. This caused me to become even more insecure about my abilities and become even more scared of embarrassment. Eventually, I stopped coming for a few months 'and when I came back I followed one of the best coaches in my gym to his new gym. I started to get back in the flow of things but I still had a crippling feeling of nervousness. I felt this weird feeling of disconnection when it came to socializing with others at my gym. At this new gym after a while, I would start to not come as frequently because I was so nervous about going. While at that gym, I won first place in a state tournament, but I was still scared and I felt disconnected. One day I sprained my wrist so I took another break and due to anxiety and stuff like that, this lasted almost 2 years. This March I came back, but due to anxiety and my parents not having as much time as they used to I have only gone 10 days since late March. Today I was supposed to go, the last time I went was a month ago. I can't begin to describe the immense feeling of regret because of this that has just been eating me up for years. I love and love Jiu Jitsu but I just can't bring myself to go especially after losing so much time. Although if I go back and stick with it, I most likely could make something of myself again since I'm still young . It really hurts to think of how much anxiety has controlled my life, but as of right now I'm starting to think I may just be lazy like my parents thought I was for so long when I didn't want to go to jiu Jitsu, before they knew I had anxiety. ( i wrote this in a fairly fast manner so i apologies for the poor writing . )

I’d be willing to bet that 50% of purple belts and down are doing BJJ because of hearing Joe talk about it non-stop. For the people thinking about starting and are scared, don’t be. My ego kept me from walking through the door of a gym for 10 years before I started, and after my first week, I regretted 10 years of my ego keeping me from it. It is one of the absolute loves of my life, and I might be a white belt for life, but I don’t care. I’ll keep training 4+ times per week until I die.

I’ve been rolling for two months now, 4 times a week. And I was thinking to myself why is this thing so addictive. After some thought, I think I’m captivated by the idea that an attack, can get reversed and that gets reversed and so on and so on and the infinite roll concept where two people, equally matched, could go on forever without a tap is the thing that captivated me. Then, you realise when you’re on the mat getting tapped, that to achieve that infinitesimal level, you need to work harder to up your game. It’s like a life quest 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼

After about 14 years skateboarding, I felt stuck in the context of progressing in that sport. I found Jiu Jitsu at that time which took the front seat in my life (athletically) for the proceeding 7ish years. About 6 months after I got my purple belt, I decided to take a step back and refocus on skateboarding. Since then, I haven’t been back to Jiu Jitsu… Not because I don’t love Jiu Jitsu, but because the principles within Jiu Jitsu helped me rethink my entire approach to skateboarding (in addition to providing me a new skill set for falling (amongst several other things)). There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about Jiu Jitsu, but ultimately, I’m married to the game of skateboarding. Alongside skateboarding, Jiu Jitsu is the greatest sport in the world. And in many ways, it was THE thing that ultimately saved my marriage with skateboarding…lol

The thing I love is the help getting out of your shell. I don’t mind getting my ass beat, lol. But it’s the approaching people to roll or even drill that’s the hardest part for me. And that’s probably the greatest thing for me, personally. And everyone is so welcoming and will help you with what to do as they’re submitting you. It’s all love ❤️

The pencil necks see the muscle, strain and exposition of just practice...and see that as a threat. They don't see the bond of brotherhood of physical contact. My instructor maybe old, had his 7th degree in judo always told us, "There's always someone more hungry". (Glenn Negen) Miss him like a father and best friend.

Started BJJ at 42 yo.....Been skateboarding since 30 years but got injured really bad last year May while skating (Torn ACL, ICL and Meniscus). Had surgery in July. So. Only did BJJ for about 4 months. Just started going to class again last week. And it feels great. I think I will get into this alot more now and let skateboarding become a part of my past life. Maybe roll around parks and stuff. But I really like the feeling BJJ gives me. ❤

Nice sound bites from Rogan and Willink here about BJJ, but for me personally, it was Rogan interviewing Guy Ritchie and talking about BJJ that got me to try it out in the end. They way they talked about it made it sound very appealing to me :)

@@Leo-dv7xb yes it was a really freak accident though. All i did was a back step in half guard from top position and my meniscus ripped. I think my foot got caught in the mat or something? It's hard to remember exactly

In order to progress and to get better at something, it always comes down to having the right understanding and the right attitude. It is good to remember the old proverb "A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool". So always be curious and open yourself to the endless possibilities. And yes...the learning never stops. It would be a pretty dull existence if it did.
