My kid gets mad at me everyday because when we’re out, he can’t be on his phone. He has to look out the window for car rides 😱, has to have conversation w people 😬 and when we get home, he can’t be on it for a long time either. The longer he is off it, the more his uses his imagination to find things to do when he is bored. But it takes consistency. 🤷‍♀️ I dont keep him off it 100% cuz this is the world we live in now, but I do make sure he finds himself bored so he can figure out how else to spend his time. Usually he finds himself in some sort of art project. Its a good give and take. He prefers not to be on social media apps (ie facebook, snapchat, instagram, twitter, etc), but he does like RU-vid and talks to his friends through Discord.

Tiny Dancer how old is he? I’m 14 and do basically the same: RU-vid and discord. My parents let me do what ever I want as long as I earn it. I never found value in social media. Two years ago I moved from a SMALL town in Kentucky to Colorado leaving all my friends behind. The only way to communicate with my friends is through social media and similar mediums. I feel inept I don’t understand half the things they are talking about in terms of functionality and memes. I still don’t keep up with social media even though it’s the only way to talk to them. I’m just too busy with college classes and trying to exercise regularly and make friends that live nearby. Sorry I completely forgot what this comment was about and already typed it out so I’m posting it. One thing I’ll add is going outside and playing the way I’m sure you used to is harder unless other parents have the same mindset as you. I could go walk around my neighborhood of hours and not see a single person my age and it’s the same at the parks.

Before I got out of education, kids would waste so much time in the bathrooms on their phones taking selfies of themselves before and after class. We had to have bathroom monitors to get them to class on time. It's not only anxiety, but complete narcissism. They couldn't focus in class unless they posted on Instagram before. Their worlds completely revolve around themselves. As soon as they get a whiff the world doesn't work that way, they'd loose it. These kids have to stroke their egos constantly or they're destroyed. Once I had students bringing "anxiety fish" (beta fish they'd carry around in a bowl and stare at when they felt stress, which was all the time) I knew we were in trouble. Even the best students had the narcissistic tendicies. It's only going to get worse if not corrected soon.

Well this is truth to this. We do use social media when bored but many also use it to float their “success” or happiness and they present a life that doesn’t actually exist. They fabricate it to appear a certain way or status. Then a normal person sees this and compares their own life to a made up one and feel a sense of lacking. It takes a strong person to say, “I don’t care what they are doing I am fine with what I have and where I am in life”. Many lack that

@marinecombatvet2669

It is truly an addiction in many. But don't discount the many other people who HAVE done something about it, and taken our lives back as our own. It can seem insurmountable to even consider leaving social media, I recognize that. That fear of becoming invisible to the world. But for those of us who have, and those who still will, the recognition exists as a real-world acceptance of us existing. Not as some digital pseudo-individual, but as an actual flesh-and-blood person. Social media cannot quantify that. Non-digital humans break their algorithm. And YOU can too.

@@jessekittrell2946 Addictions are addictions, but social media is different. If you are buying a pint of liquor every day to down before bed, you should be able to recognize that there's an issue that might need addressing. We tend to recognize our consumption of substances--we either ignore that excessive consumption, have someone else who'll bring it up, or decide ourselves that we'll make a change for this behavior that is clearly not healthy. Social media is NOT like this. With social media, there's really no warning signal in the typical sense. We don't have to buy it with our cash every day for there to be a serious problem. Who cares if we check it every 15 minutes? It's not like we're taking a shot at the same intervals, right? Right? But we are. When we are obsessively locked into that digital system, our brain doesn't really treat it any different. Whether a shot of alcohol, a hit from some narcotic, or finding that our last post is THIS CLOSE to going viral (if only we could find a way to bump it up)--a bump is a bump. A hit is a hit. Addiction is addiction. Drugs or drink or digital, the effect of that dopamine and brain chemistry doesn't differentiate. A person can become an addict without ever taking any real substance into their body. Addiction does not require a substance, it's clearly defined in the medical field. We humans addict to SO many things, MANY more things than just substances. We seek out that dopamine hit, we seek out the rush or thrill that might come from anything. But it's only an addiction once we become dependent on it. Dependency is what makes something (anything) an addiction. Doesn't actually matter what that *thing* is. Money can addict just as powerfully as any drug can--just as can chasing that 'LIKE' icon. Don't kid yourself. It's never too late to recognize an addiction and choose to make a change that will take you back from it. "It's way too late now" to go back is how an addict will justify their addiction. It's not their fault really, it's the human condition. We just want to feel good. We ALL want to feel good. Nothing wrong with it. But do not kid yourself and tell yourself that it's all ok because we're so entrenched in this new reality of digital and social everything connectedness. It's not always a problem to everyone. But to some, sometimes, it becomes one. And when it does, it's medically no different than any other addiction. Your obsessive facebook checking and constant need for it to validate yourself may very well be harming you. If you cannot walk away from something that's become a habit, there's a good chance it's become elevated to that of an addiction. No matter what IT is.

If people ask you about it, then tell them matter of factly, but confidently that you used to have an account, but deleted it because you weren't really using it or don't have the time, or something. Mature people, those worthy of being called your "friends," won't think anything of it and won't view you any differently. At most, they may tease you a little, but not to be malicious. Stupid people, on the other hand, whose lives revolve around social media like zombies, may respond negatively or maliciously. I can agree with Johns assessment that coddling kids negatively effects their social skills and anxiety levels. As a kid I was never pushed to get out of my comfort zone socially, was never pushed to go up to the counter at the store and purchase things, or to go and catch a bus on my own or a train. I believe it, alongside the usual high school bullying made me quite socially anxious. I'm 27 now and have worked hard to get out of my comfort zone and for the most part many of my anxieties are under control, but it took a long time whilst my peers didn't have these issues and got on with life a lot better than I have so far.

I have experienced this as well but with work. When I was in high school I was asking my parents to find a part-time job ( i was very carefree then and not at all anxious) and they didn't agree with it cause they wanted me to have time to play and focus on school and while I understand they did it because they cared etc it was actually bad for me. I'm 22 now and I get very anxious and stressed thinking about getting a job because I never got familiar with it when I should have.

For a kid with a poor relationship with parents, family, friends, I can see the negative effects of the world being very problematic. For a kid with a strong community of all the above, I see those influences as just annoying but minor inconveniences.

Every time I've deleted my social media accounts, I've felt immediately better. Why did I ever get back on? Pressure from family and friends, and also, the feeling of missing out. This just reinforces my belief that social media is doing nothing good for our social lives.

It also makes us (normal people) more aware of our flaws and imperfections and it really sucks lol. We're constantly exposed to people and celebrities (and our friends as well) that are better than us in every way (looks, money, overall quality of life etc.) and we're comparing ourselves to them. For me, personally, I've never let other people (other than authorities, employers, teachers etc.) set the standards for me, I'm far from perfect and I know it so if I don't jibe with you then that's cool..just move on. Life is way too short to constantly give fucks about what others think of you, the sooner you accept this the better.

If we even bother to use the comments section, it is with strangers. There's no comparison to others, no FOMO, no filters warping beauty standards, no highlight reel, no bullying from peers -- everything mentioned in the video as being harmful. That's not to say that RU-vid can't be addictive or have negative effects if too much time is spent on it either. I’ve seen at least 100 parents in Seattle chat on their phone when babies or toddlers accidentally hurt themselves. Also the whole male vs female argument is false too. Harder to be a middle school girl than a boy? Gtfo feminist. You can be a male and be a victim of cyber bullying. You can be a female and have a black eye. A lot of this hacks data is based on gender studies which have been debunked since 2006 via a test on how MySpace affected teenagers.

If you don't know the people on your own street and what goes about, you'll believe anything the news says about your own neighborhood. It makes our society weak and vulnerable. It's terrible.

I'm a 26 year old, so not Gen Z or a woman but I have noticed a huge change in my life, tensions are higher and harder to articulate. The obligation of "maintaining" relationships, especially those with friends of past years (high school, college, etc) and keeping them cared about is exhausting, at a certain point its healthier to not care what your old best friend is up to than to ask and "work" at producing a genuine reaction to a person that you know is well out of your loop these days. Flip phones will rule again one day lol

My mom made me stop having my phone in my room shortly after I got an iphone at 12. I was furious at her and didn’t understand why but as i’m about to start college, finally done with middle school and high school, age 18 I realize why she did it. Social media really ruined so much of my life and screwed up so many things that could have been awesome, but because of social media I was sad or thinking about how great everyone else’s life is and mine isn’t. I still struggle with it today, sometimes I need to force myself off of instagram because all I can see is people on expensive vacations, beautiful girls with clear skin, everyone’s really expensive drinks, their big houses with pools, etc. It puts me in this mindset where I think, “my life sucks.” because I don’t have that. And it’s engrained in my mind! This guy is totally right.!

The worst part about social media is that it creates a false atmosphere of positivity because everyone posts the good times and rarely the bad times.

Your kid is 5 in the back seat, crying their little faces off.. The only way for them to shut the fuck up is to give them an ipad or device with their favorite cartoon or game on it... That was your first mistake parents. Now 10 years later, they're insanely addicted to their devices, cannot communicate with the world cause the only thing they know for yearrrs is their phones.. You take it away, they get depressed and crazy.. Giving your child a device is essentially starting them on heroin.. Happening to my nephew right now.. Dude is so socially awkward that as soon as he feels the slightest bit weird, he's face down in his iphone, you can scream his name and he will not even recognize you're there.. Just turned 14...

This is currently happening with my 8 year old niece. She is an only child. Every since she got her first tablet at 3 years of age, she has been spoiled and socially awkward. When she went to her first sleepover with other girls her age, she was already wanting to give up socializing with them and wanted her iPad. I saw this happen as I was a chaperone for the girls. Even now in the pandemic, my niece is struggling with online school because all she wants to do is be on her iPad!

*ANOTHER ANXIETY MECHANISM FROM SOCIAL MEDIA/PHONES/LAPTOPS IN GENERAL* I'm a 22 year old male and I have had anxiety and dealt quite well with it. Recently I've realised the reason why I've had anxiety and it's all to do with my thoughts racing and not being able to be at ease with them. Mindulfulness/meditation and exercise has helped a lot, but the main thing that helped was realising WHY these have helped me, especially the former! Mindfulness is taking a step back and noticing your thoughts without any obligation to chase or suppress them, you're at ease with your mind. THE PROBLEM WITH SOCIAL MEDIA/PHONES/LAPTOPS is that while you're on them, your mind is racing unnaturally AND without you noticing. THIS IS HUGE and no one else seems to have figured it out yet but I think it's extremely important for general anxiety sufferers like me. If I go on my phone first thing in the morning or when I should be resting my mind, I notice my anxiety/panicking is worse. I recommend for anyone is suffering with anxiety takes a week or so off instagram and facebook etc., seriously try it if you really want your anxiety to get better. Try it, what have you got to lose? Just do it.

@@whitenbald Lol nope, it's an often occurring thing for people of our generation to take medication like Ritalin or Adderall. I have experienced that it elevates your social skills temporarily, followed by a tremendous decrease in them. In my opinion, the best cures for social anxiety are: working out, eating healthy, avoiding caffeine and socialise as often as possible.

@@tangerinetech5300 True theres definitely a balance. It depends on what you're worried about, if its abduction or some other violent crime, then I think the chances of that happening are so miniscule.
