It always annoyed me how shows weren't more accurate to real life. I know if you made it accurate with people flubbing their words and the occasional stutter, it would throw the flow of a show off but there's so many other things (like people laughing at each other) that they never even attempt. Except Curb obviously.
Only because the cast are great at improv, a lot of the guest actors are bad though and drag the scenes down which has become more of an issue across the series.
I don't mind if it's unnatural as long as it's good. Because old-ass movies have super unnatural dialogue, yet they're very entertaining. Natural-sounding dialogue is just one way to do a show/movie, and it can suck too. A lot of shows try to be overly natural and the writing goes nowhere
Come on now. Yeah he wrote the funniest story lines but Jerry was great too. As a writer and as a performer. His observations of daily life are a big part of the show
stop discrediting Jerry's importance to the show. he plays the best "straight man" (comedy term, not sexual orientations or lgbtbbq bullshit) probably ever
The fact that Larry David went on a rant and quit SNL when he was a writer their and then he showed up for work on Monday like nothing ever happened. They used that on Seinfeld where George quits his Real Estate job with Rick Barr then comes back on monday morning as if he never quit. Brilliant !
I'll always be a winner and you'll always be a loser. Thats why im over here and youre................over there. I wonder if larry thought about slipping a mickey in real life lol
Curb your enthusiasm has a unique way of bringing everything back to the first big event in the first episode, on a crazy rollercoaster ride. It's easily one of the best shows out there and Larry is a genius writer.
Much like a great piece of music. There's a solid riff, or a hook, or even just a section that resonates with the listener and then it goes off somewhere else for awhile, but brings it right back home. That resolve. He's a master of his craft.
grvonny I agree Jerry Seinfeld OWES everything to the Characters of George and Kramer OF HIS show, IT would have never been a hit at all without them and their antics, Jerry and Elaine Characters were actually easy replaceable
I liked Jeff's integrity with saying the names of the show's he enjoys and holding back on the ones he doesn't. Him saying that they're just not for him but understanding that they may be the favorite of some who are listening speaks volumes about his character.
I’ve just started watching Curb for the first time... I’m blown away. It makes me so happy when I watch comedy like this, there’s no soft agenda, it’s just people being funny.
Garlin is so perceptive in acknowledging that the characters in Curb laugh at each other when they say something funny, whereas the characters in a traditional sitcom do not. What an epiphany, certainly one of the secret ingredients of Curb.
Great point, that actors dont laugh themselves when they are being told great, funny lines. I was rewatching a curb clip ysterday and part of the greatness was that Larry and Jb just couldnt contain their laughter during the scene. It comes across so much more authentic
The ending of that episode when the mail carrier says, “hey asshole, hears your mail!” And she hits him on the head and he falls and Leon thanks him for his service almost made me go to the ER I laughed so hard for so long.... I though I dislocated a rib.
People actually laughing at each other in Curb was something I noticed as well. It just feels way more natural. With most shows I often wonder why those people are even friends if they don't laugh at each other's banter or when someone just cracks a great joke. They always act like it's the most natural thing to come up with a witty reply in any given situation.
People used to in sitcoms. Watch Cheers or Frasier. They stopped sometime in the 2000s and made it to where characters don’t have senses of humor themselves.
I tell jokes in the family .....nobody laughs. I watch Curb with them....nobody laughs. We all watch Big Bang Theory and they roll on the floor...I don't laugh. So I got a new family.
I take solace in the fact that most of the shows and movies I really truly enjoy, don't have followings like the prime time shows. That's the shows they make for robots. They sneak shows like curb in for people that use their brain. Why most of the comedy is layered and hidden. It's a masterpiece
Typical Big bang theory joke: "Hey Sheldon" hahaha "Dont disturb me" Hahaha "What are you doing?" Hahaha "I'm rearranging my comics because some idiot mixed an Amazing Spiderman in with my Incredible Hulks. What the hell!" HAHHAAHHHAHHAHHAHHAH! Garbage.
@@beatz04 If a show needs a laugh track, it probably isn't very funny. That or the people watching it are so stupid, they have to be signaled when the punchline hits.
@@BCS1105 I think Seinfeld had a live studio audience. I watched a clip with Jerry talking about how the audience laughing changed the timing of jokes.
Your praise of Larry is polite but unsupportable. Now, if you have heard comedians through Africa, Europe, Asia, South America, the Maldives Islands, Oman, New Guinea, and Siberia and feel Larry is funnier then your statement may be semi-legitimate. Otherwise, you may say he is one of the funniest among the over 65 in the northeastern sector of Beverly Hills who have been members of the Screen Actors Guild for at least 48 years. That's it!
I think the microphone accentuates vocals but you’re right to highlight an issue. Without question Jeff has a long standing issue with his gi tract. The irony is that his dr earns $100’000’s a year and won’t do a damn thing to help Jeff
His point about why characters in sitcoms don't make each other laugh but they make the audience laugh is so well observed. I always thought this with F-R-I-E-N-D-S. Chandler's whole personality trait is that he's funny, yet no one's ever seen laughing at his jokes.
I just couldn't watch that show. I watched about 5 episodes and didn't laugh even once. They seem have an exact unfunny formula that they always used for virtually every situation.
agree, Jerry is a good observer, but Larry understands and relates to human foibles far better than Jerry... these foibles were essential to the success of the series.
Jeff is just being Jeff on the show, it's Susie that's really acting, because she is an absolute sweetheart in real life. She used to come by my store all the time and was always so kind and friendly.
@@roodick85 It has a lot of good bits in the first 4-5 seasons imo. The problem is that they generalized their humor beyond their core demographic (the "nerds") which just made all the jokes and comedy mediocre and average.
uh no dude. early on the show was magnificent if you want to see nerds get punished, like wolowitz getting his dick stuck in a robot. once the show gave them all girlfriends it became unwatchable trash.
@Gregory Smith I'll admit the Egg Salad Sandwich episode with Sheldon and the female assistant was one of the more funny things I saw on Network Television.
it melts my heart when someone does or says something sweet and they all say "awwwwwwwwwwwww" there's nothing corny, over-sentimental or American about that, never gets old
Larry is a comic genius ...his show brings me to a happy place.... I can so relate to how the way people act bother him ... the characters on the show are so real to me.. when he tells people off I love it! most tv comedies on tv today are for simpletons ...
Many people, demographics(21-50, med income upper $$$) tune out but want stable relatable characters & plots that do not take tons of effort. King of Queens, 2 & half men, Mike & Molly, etc.
I can honestly say it's OK. Be pleased not everyone is on this level, they need TV too. If you liked all TV it'd mean your just as dumb as everyone else
I used to watch it when I was 13. I can remember their way of doing comedy is very specific that if you were get the so called reference you can laugh but that reference is so specific more than 90% of your demographic won't be able to understand. Show's representation of "nerd" culture is so bad. Nerds or geeks or radical humans can't find it funny but some out of touch people can find funny. Just like Jimmy Kimmell (or media in general) and e-sports. Only reason I continue watching is I after many hours wasting my time am kinda invested in characters (even though they're terribly written). Reason for that is I spent many hours watching them they became oddly familiar. Still I prefer other comedy shows It's Always Sunny etc.
It was so long ago now but I remember the first episodes (maybe 5) were funny but then it went downhill. I watched a more recent episode and omg.. Sheldon has to be the most annoying character I ever witnessed in a sitcom.
I’ll always treasure the moments in my life where my faith in humanity is redeemed, and reading this comment section of everyone bashing “The Big Bang Theory” has provided that redemption for me. So thank you.
Ryan Sullivan it’s not constantly good like it use to be in the first 8-9 seasons but you’ll still randomly get an incredible episode a few times a season now
Frasier is my favorite show. The first time I watched it through, I noticed the characters laughing at the jokes along with the audience. it was refreshing.
I remember being a big fan of Seinfeld and hearing a lot about Larry David, but aside from being the voice of Steinbrenner whom we never get to see, he was this elusive, mythical overlord. Thanks to Curb, he's just as recognizable as Seinfeld now.
Best Comedy Series Ever!!! The fact that everything in the show is relatable in real life is crazy…it exposes things that people don’t speak about but deep down we know is funny even if you can only admit it to yourself.
Garlin is right. I dug News Radio although it was never a big hit. The networks kill all creativity until everything is mushed down to common denominator.
Joe, I’m 30 and brazilian. NewsRadio was one of my favorite tv shows. I think it always got a cult stuff in it. Even with 8,9 years old, me and my friends enjoyed NewsRadio, and hated Two Guys and a Girl by example. And Phil Hartman will always be remembered.
Yeah, audience laughing yet the actors deadpan is very weird, one example is Friends where Chandler is "the funny one" who's sarcastic and makes a lot of jokes but he's NEVER made any of his friends laugh.
Friends was funny in a similar way to seinfeld in that the whole episode could be about the most simple situation/interaction, early seasons of friends were great but the later seasons ruined it, chandlers sarcastic humor and especially timing was so underrated
Gratitude vs luck is actually an important distinction. It sounds cheesy but I remember Tony Robbins saying the cure for resentment is gratitude. Not quite the same thing but I'm reminded of it.
Man, started watching curb a few months back and love it… and wow has Jeff Garlin ever lost weight. That’s amazing for him to make that effort in the later years of his adult life… good for him.
I absolutely loved News Radio! Stellar ensemble and gut splitting humor. Hartman❣️ so often steals the show, but everyone including Joe had plenty of great moments as well and made the whole cast come together in the best way. Rogan always seems to get away with playing himself.
I am from Ireland and I dont know many people who liked Seinfeld but Curb Your Enthusiasm is pure genius and is loved by almost every person that Ive talked to about that show.
Newsradio is classic show! Super Inspirational and the cast was stellar! It introduced me to Joe Rogan, to Phil Hartman's work outside of the Simpsons and SNL, and I followed Dave Foley into Kids in the Hall thanks to Newsradio (his monologue on menstruation was my comedy monologue for auditions for years). I was 12 years old when I watched that show - so while all my peers were watching Nickelodeon and Disney - I was watching Newsradio :)
