Been training for about 4 months now. Just a white belt , but I enjoy the journey. I feel like I got so much better than when I walked through the door it’s insane. I’m only 4 months in and I feel like if someone my size with no training came in I would beat them 10 times out of 10. And if I can’t get the tap. I could work positions on them. I’ve been a black belt for over 5 years and never spent less than 3 years (up to 5+) at any belt: Blue belts are not “just learning” -at least not the young bucks where I train. Sure I can choke them but there’s a few that make me work for it.
@bennym1326
@bennym1326 3 года назад
I don’t entirely agree with Jo Rogan in this case. Getting smashed makes you learn as well. After the 5 or 6th time of getting hit with the same sequence or choke, you question it, assess it and then learn to avoid or defend it. I have great defence nowadays, from getting smashed 😉
@stuartcooperfilms

Yeah, I feel it's important to mix it up. It's good to get smashed by high level guys to get some perspective of where you're at and how good you may get. It's also important to roll with people who are not quite as good as you so you can work on your technique without excessive resistance. It's also good to roll with people who are a bit better than you to help you identify weak spots in your game and to force you to refine your technique and develop your game.
@synergyrevolution2332

I don't think Joe believes theres no benefit in rolling with someone better than you, he just believes rolling with someone less proficient is the best way to really sharpen things. Just because you say something is the best doesn't mean you don't do any of the other things under that.
@danthegrappler3704
@danthegrappler3704 3 года назад
Great video, really good watch and an Interesting point of view, I really believe you have to get as many different body types and rolling styles as opponents as possible too. I've been to quite a few seminars where multiple people from different academies go in groups and when its roll time still stick to their respective opponents and stay where they're comfortable. I have guys at my academy that just smash me regular, I mean 110kg black belts that I simply cannot get a submission on, being at a huge weight and disadvantage. I mostly learn to survive with these guys, they squeeze me until I want to give up, my biggest achievement is to get through a round without tapping but I've learnt something. It's always a humbling and honorable experience to roll with someone better than you if you let go of your ego and take it as a learning experience.

@ryankeels4661
@ryankeels4661 3 года назад
Rolling with those better than you sharpens your defense, escapes, and guard retention... but when you learn a brand new submission your offense and ability to overcome a person's defense to that submission is essentially at white belt level... you must start implementing that technique on white belts and slowly refine the technique and work your ability up the ladder. It's hard to get good at an offensive technique if your positional skills aren't at that level yet. Hard to triangle a brown at blue if they are putting massive pressure on you passing your guard. Or hard to practice armbarring black belts from the mount if you can only get there 1/10 times and can only stay there for 30 seconds. So most people pull their submissions up in a cyclical nature relative their positional strength in that area and maybe have 1 or 2 techniques that shine 1 belt above their overall level and its usually because they are very strong positionally from the setup position or the submission is initiated from a neutral position.

@@fritzr.4722 I dunno. I train too, at an MMA gym. When a legit Black Belt gets ahold of you, it's a helpless feeling I if you can't grapple. @@321itsdone5 nice i train mma too. I think what joe wanted to say is if a guy, built like deante wilder gets in a boxing match with a boxing champ, there is still a chance for the big guy bc: -everyone has a basic concept of how to throw a few punches and how to block. -punches can come from so many angels and combinations, there might still be something even the champ has never seen before. -if the champ makes one small mistake, like he doesnt see some punch and gets touched, it might be a KO rightaway bc of the extreme power this guy could build. -the champ knows this and has to take extra care not to get touched. On the other hand, if a very big, muscular guy, who has never done bjj in his life, fights a black belt, he won't stand a chance. Bc -no one has a basic concept of what to do on the ground -since your movement on the ground is very limited, there won't be any surprises for the black belt. -the black belt cant be submitted just bc he made one small mistake. -from every position he can escape without the big guy doing damage to him.

"To get better, just beat up everyone else in the gym who's not as good as you." Yes, that is bullying, Joe. It's also why there as so many meatheads in BJJ who run around acting like they need to beat the shit out of everyone that disagrees with them... and then they end up getting put into the ground by someone who doesn't fuck around. Sparring blackbelts should be about learning, not getting your ass kicked, choked out, and getting your joints ruined so you can't even fucking defend yourself over 30-years old from all of the damage. Likewise, sparring lower ranks should be about teaching them, not beating the shit out of them and destroying their bodies. This is one of the most outright egotistical arts on the planet. I'm speaking from real-world experience, not ring sports.

I disagree. There is value in sparring with less experienced partners to sharpen your offense, as well as getting smashed to toughen your defense, but the very best way is to find a more experienced partner who can actually adjust the resistance to match your level and help you work in the SWEET SPOT, where you are being challenged but still mostly successful against OPTIMAL reactions. - Patrick Fulop
