Walking 5 miles every morning to get to my 4-12 McDonald’s shift then coming home and getting screamed at by my father till I was lucky enough to fall asleep then do it again.
No, cell phones didn't exist at the time. Kids got to grow up. You used to be able to go out and people would just think you went out instead of tracking you down.
That dude was 16-17 years old, going to bars, skinny dipping? Bro if you tried that today they'd card you and call the cops on you. Different times now.
This is ironic because I am a 16 year old currently on lunch break from my construction job. Totally get what joe is saying here, my job has helped me realize that this is a path I don’t want to go down.
^ I agree man how are you doing, you should look into investing. Anyone can be a millionaire if they start at your age & know how to not waste their money
@@maonyksmohc9574 same here man, many better alternatives unless you are trying to be a doctor/lawyer ect.. you sound like your probably an entrepreneur ngl
Fear of minimum wage should make you want to develop skills, not necessarily go to college. That depends on what skills you want to learn. Some skills require getting a college education to learn, but not all of them.
Dalton Woods he could have a 8 hour job 6:30-3:30 and from 3:30-9:30 he goes somewhere else like a farm to work or he just does odd jobs getting paid under the table. Not uncommon for people and teenagers especially to have a 8 hour day job then go to a farm to work the evening, mowing, washing cars or whatever odd job that’s easy to do and easy to get paid under the table.
I remember mowing lawns all day and thinking some guy is going to be doing this for the rest of his life, I have an opportunity to do something greater
I did lawn care for a summer in college. I worked with a guy in his 50s. One day he asked what I was going to college for and I told him accounting. His response was "oh so you want an office job." I told him "Fuck yea I want an office job I'm not trying to be out here mowing lawns for $12/hour when I'm 50 like you."
There could be Landscape businesses that do lawn care for very rich people with mansions, or companies that own large amounts of land. Maybe those people can be making at least 100k a year.
@@Mark-ue9qd could I ask you for some advice? I can't find an apprenticeship and I know you at least need 2 years electrical experience to be an electrician, I'm 17 what would you recommend?
Because they spend their day at work or school. The afternoon winding down and relaxing from that then once they get back that energy they get fucked up lol
I got a job at a daycare. Not the manliest job in the world, everyone laughed at me. But everyone shut up pretty quick once I told them that I bought my car with my money, not parent’s money.
I hate people like you. They think parents just give a Bentley as their kids first car. Good for you buying your first car. Good for kids that have good parents that are able to help them. Don’t know why parents helping their kids is an issue.
We all have our struggles. I worked at a grocery store and seen and did some crazy shit. Would work crazy hours more than the "full time" employee sometimes and got to the point the customers knew me by name. That when I realized I needed to get out and find something else. I was getting scared I wasnt going anywhere and was going to get stuck there forever
Working the night shift in a warehouse sixty hours a week during high school made me realize that I needed to plan my life effectively. I’m currently a senior in college wrapping up a IT degree, without this prior experience I don’t think I would be where I am today.
Joe: " i used to come back from my construction job carrying wood all day, just came home and KO'd in my bed!" Other Dude: " yeah man, (i know what you mean)...i used to park cars at a country club..." 🙄 no bro you dont know what its like 😂😂😂😂
Albert Guerrero you ever park cars in the summer you would get it. Where you park the cars is often a mile to half a mile away and you literally run back and forth from the lot in the summer heat for 8 hours straight.
Started as a labourer in construction, now at 28 I'm a finish carpenter earning 350 pounds (440 dollars)/day doing pricework and I kinda love my job. Construction ain't that bad, unless you always stay a labourer.
Few years back in high school I sold cotton candy and lemonade at Seattle sports games during the heat of summer. Carrying 40 plus pounds of open lemonade containers overhead, walking up and down steep rows of stairs no longer than my foot and dealing with drunk fucks was a great reality check. I finished my next school year with straight A's.
@@wainach9518 100%, most people do not want to, I did that a month ago, now I'm making double what I was making before working less hours, I was a csr, now I'm working as a labourer at a good company in mine's and quarries, love it, plan on getting my operators license now and I'll double what I'm making again.
right construction is so much fucking worse. i am in the trade, 4:30am every morning, sometimes double shifts then again the next day. sometimes night shift. you NEVER know. working in the hot sun, in rooms with dust everywhere, always carrying shit. yeah parking cars AINT SHIT.
@@thegoodsgone1965 the housing wasn’t as cheap as you think, back then we used to be able to buy a bag of candy for 5 cents. We also used to earn a buck 20 an hour, so aswell as everything being cheaper, we also got less money to spend.
Don't join the military unless your geart truly calls for it and you'll know what that means. Alot of people use it as a Fallback and I know not only my community but personal experience in the military.
What What go back to school dude. You can become an aircraft tech. It's a inexpensive course and only 3 months. I know a few local colleges offer the course in my area for 380 bucks! It is 3 months with one 8 hour class a week so you can keep working while taking the course and take a single day off from work for the course. The pay is really good depending where you are going to work some places starting 35 bucks while on job training for first 3 months and your pay can increase like 10 bucks after your first 3 months. Really look into it. There's tons you can do electrician, plumber, HVAC.
I’m currently in college and I have a warehouse job over the summer. Joe is right. That shit really makes you re evaluate what it is you want to do with your life.

I did the hardest work there is: hot tar flatroofing. Absolutely back-breaking and soul-crushing work.
I don’t know what it is about this video, I always watch it when I’m feeling lost in life or unmotivated. I’m currently in college and it is hard to find motivation to study and hit the books when you got all of these fun things around at all times. However, I put things into perspective as if I’m sitting there with them at that podcast. Thinking to myself “I don’t want to just fuck around my young years and drop out of school and end up like all of my other family members. I need to stay focused and grind these few years out so I have something to show for the future”. I also take away from this video that you must live in the moment and eat that shit sandwich sometimes because I don’t want to be in my 50’s wishing I worked harder when I was in my 20’s.
Hey man don’t work too hard now. Remember to establish connections. There’s 4 billion Asians who would do your future job at a fraction of what you expect to make. Only thing stopping that is that you are a self confident, charismatic, and interesting person. It’s not all about grades or papers.
I worked construction, retail, midnight shifts at target with a boss yelling at us for 8 hours, home depot in the lot during the summer loading concrete by hand and now final[y in my field of parks and recreation working special events and basically working a general store but I make better money with easier physical labor. Almost done with school now but damn those jobs in the past were hell compared to what I do now, glad I did them though.
I'm a 25 year old carpenter and bought my own house at 23. Construction definitely isn't for everyone, but if you're willing and able it can be an excellent career.
His vivid description of the tasks at the beach bar brought me back to my summer jobs, working at ice cream stores. The stink of the hot trash overflowing with ice cream cups. The radiating smell from the dumpster we shared with the seafood place next door. Getting the best tips of like $1 and the change from the moms who ordered nonfat vanilla with extra hot fudge topping. Getting paid $5.15 per hour and really looking forward to pay day.
This is so true. After working an open to close 14 hour shift while in high school at a fast food restaurant and still not making very much money, I knew I needed to go to college
I grew up working on our family farm. My first paying job was at 15 for the summer with the Youth Conservation Corps, they would take us into the mountains and be there for a week at a time rebuilding trails, putting up fence ( miles of it in mountains) planting thousands of trees. It paid 200 a week.
YourMomOwesMeChildSupport no, I thought you had a nice burn and I wanted to compliment it. I’m actually having a great time and I’m in the prime of my life right now. I’ve had sex with 7 models today, 3 if them have made magazine covers in the last 5 years. It’s really easy to get them to want to have sex with me, all I have to do is flash my six figure salary and they immediately gravitate towards my genitals
I think everyone 17 18, boys mainly should work summer jobs that teach discipline and work ethic. Whether it's construction, landscaping, or tree service like I did. Best thing I could've done, almost every hurdle I encounter with the job I do now seems like nothing now that I've experienced such immense physical challenges. Having a good boss who could also be a mentor was huge too. Even learning basic stuff that you might not think is a big deal at a young age like showing up 10 minutes early, not 2 minutes late. It's a great way to set yourself up for success in life.
As a kid that took a construction summer job where the whole crew smoked weed alllll day I planned on working for a summer and ended up working over a year and probably would have stayed working there for much longer luckily for me I got fired this hit really close to home after that job I realized that the only boss I wanted to work for was myself now I’m an independent contractor/mechanic and I get to work whenever works for me, remember there’s no point of working for money if you don’t have time to use the money you make. Also I’ve learned how to use the money I make to make more money by buying and selling car parts and vehicles because that is what I know but this can be applied to almost any industry
This was my life every summer from sophomore year of high school till last august when i finally transferred into ucf 4 years later just working construction 13 hours six days a week and grind through that shit. first day after graduating high school i remember just getting in from work and just going fuck my life i need to get an education or some shit cause this 13 hour a day shit fucking sucks. Glad i did it though i met some fucking characters working in the keys on sites and made me realize to not fuck around in school.
Did Lowe’s outside lawn and garden during college , 530 am opening was the worst on sat and sundays after being out all night . Trying to talk to customers asking me about mulch or saying I need 3 pallets of landscaping tiles and rocks loaded by hand was just horrible , now I supervise Crews building houses , feel for those guys
Working while you're tired while youre a kid is very important. I'll be out at 4 in the morning drinking and partying. Back at work at a bar the next day.
Working as a camp counselor in charge of a bunch of 6 year olds informed me that I needed a high paid job. I don’t think there’s a more underpaid job to teenagers than camp jobs.
When i was 12 my father put me in a construction job. I worked for a month. I swear i was working harder than anyone else. But the thing is, it changed me. Im gratefull that my father did that.
Ahhhh... I remember the days of drinking, dancing, and boundless energy. Closing out clubs, dancing all night until the lights came on for last call. Hopefully by then you were making out with somebody hahaha. In my early 30's now, and I don't even think I'd go to another club if my life depended on it. Now I chill on the couch after the joy of crafting my own Old Fashioned with whatever bourbon I'm trying that month and sit out on the balcony and watch the sunset. Polar opposites of having a good time lol.
I was a carpenter apprentice for 2 years 16-18 carrying 3 lengths of 2x4 or 2 sheats of plasterboard up 5+ flights of stairs and got sick of always being tired to the point i could not even be fucked going out for drinks on the weekend because i was so sore and tired my knees were always fucked from standing on concrete 9 hours a day
Man I used to work at a grocery store for a summer pushing carts in 120 degrees for 2-3 hours 2x during a my 8 hour shifts 5 days a week. Made me realize I couldn’t see myself doing the same repetitive shit for the rest of my life.
I’ve been installing floors since I was about 8 with my dad and he would never let me take more than a couple breaks, I can do it now without any breaks but as a kid it felt super straining to be denied rest
I just resigned as a firefighter/paramedic after working extremely hard to get there and then getting there and realizing I didnt want to do it for the rest of my life. Now im working construction (installing window shades) wondering what I want to do for the rest of my working life. Its very interesting listening to this conversation and where im at in my life right now.
When i was in 8th grade my father took me out of football and started bringing me to work with him every summer after that. At the time there were moments I'd complain and find it hard but it was the greatest thing my father ever did for me. He taught me work ethics and how to be man and i could never repay him for that
Gustavo Almanza push through man. Push through. God be with you. Please come to the Lord Jesus Christ. In Him is life. Romans 6:23 King James Version (KJV) 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Keep hitting restaurant chains and retail. It's best u go in person dont waste time online bro. It's best to look the manager in the eye and shake his hands like a man. U will be alright
@@rhysstanley7387 it was a flop, the old lady got mad at me for not sanitizing my hands when I walked in smh, and the girl at the grocery store just took my resume and dumped it with the rest. But, I won't loose hope yet, there are so many plazas in my area.
@@rhysstanley7387 Lol, no matter how much I handed out my resume or applied to jobs, no one hired me. As of January (9 months after I posted this comment) I finally got hired at Walmart through a reference, otherwise I know for sure, I would have never gotten hired.
I remember working summer jobs from 6:30-6:30 5 days a week in high school! it was literally learning how perform optimally completely zapped. Great character builder for sure
Can’t believe I missed this podcast out of all I’ve seen of Joe’s…..this has to be one of the best ones for content and being hilarious 😄👍 Wish I saw this 6yrs sgo😄
Bro hopefully you can see this, you must be 19 already im 17 right now and im thinking on working in construction after highschool. Do you have any advice bro??
Got a summer job atm in a big butchering factory, it's the worst shit I've ever done and I am so extremely motivated to go back to school after the summer.
