It's happens in figure skating too. Any sport that allows judgement shouldn't be in the Olympics. If it's not a time, distance or score then fuck off and make your own corrupt Olympics.
Yeah there's been some really bad decisions in Olympic boxing, so bad that they were obvious to people who knew nothing about boxing, things like that can change athletes lives and careers, I don't think some people realise how serious it can be.
Why doesn’t Joe mention how the UFC screwed all the fighters with the Reebok deal? Before Reebok came along, fighters could promote their own sponsors in fights. That’s why I don’t buy a single thing from Reebok.
Well speaking of not paying athletes, the UFC only pays fighter 10-15% of their revenue while in sports like football, basketball and soccer, they pay their athletes 47-50% of the total revenue earned. Sad.
Abit like the UFC, they're forced into Reebok contracts for a max of $20,000 for sponsorship when they could easy earn far more by seeking their own sponsors with multiple companies!
craiggrogan its a great point. I’d love to hear Joe bring it up. Like what’s the line you would draw between limiting professional athletes pay and not paying them at all?
Then someone like Brock Lesnar comes along and isn’t bound to that agreement. I remember his tights having a large Jimmy John’s logo on it and no sign of Reebok.
You are right about that, I live about 3 hours from Atlanta where the 96 summer games where held, and I can for sure tell you since the 96 games ended, they have not done much of jack shit with all the construction they built for the games except stick it too the tax payers, and then turn around, and build 2 new stadiums for the Braves, and Falcons, and stick that to the tax payers as well. Personally I don't think pro sports should be allowed to that shit, same as the Olympics.
Commodorefan64 Agreed. But unfortunately the cities spend millions to attract the Olympics and pro sports teams, then foot the bill for the infrastructure and give it all up tax free. Utter madness.
I remember seeing the host stadiums in some of these places. Its sad how much of a spectacle they are willing to put on, show a fake face, just for the temporary attention.
Blackman Whitesuit Agreed, just look at Rio after the World Cup, and The Olympics, the state of Rio had to file for bankruptcy if I remember correctly. A state government filling for bankruptcy protection in a major country over sports to me is just insane. I love sports, but again to me this is just insane.
commdorefan64 i feel the same way. Even though I love sports, it's entertainment. The stability of the country and the people have to come before the fun of sports.
I am in my 70,s and I remember when this event was coverage was filled with amazing events and now it’s endless commercials and talking heads. I haven’t watched it for decades.
Yeah, I'm young and remember even in the 90's that it had more coverage, compared to these years, granted covid happened. I remember last few times Mcdonalds was a sponsor, the most unhealthy food, sponsored by obe of the most heathly events.
I feel like making it to the Olympics should come with a least a million or 2. And then getting a metal should be tens of millions. I saw another comment saying his manager at Kroger’s is a gold medalist. These people are the worlds best athletes they should be able to retire after getting a metal imo
Alot of athletes get money from their home countries if they win a medal , But yes if you make it to the olympics you should get some of the revenue because wll thats fair
As a kid snowboarding belonged to Shaun white. All I knew was this orange mop topped badass skateboarder/snowboarder. Still the only name I Really recognize in Snowboarding
They pick athletes with the most "humble" background because they'll give everything for very little support (money, gear and/or fame), it is also inspirational, which sells a lot more. Request compensation for your time and effort = Get fired
This is entirely the same situation with college sports. It's notable (in a bad way) that most students are white but most college football athletes are black, who don't get paid and are let go after a few injuries.
I would say that those with the most humble background won't bother because they need to earn a living asap so they will give up due to lack of money , which means that the people who can afford to go without earning for a few years after high school will get the opportunity to advance . This is the same story with good careers where they expect newcomers to do unpaid internships
Maybe that's why the left wants to stir up so much media bs on minorities so that they can control them when they're put in positions of power. Guaranteed thats true, call me crazy but I'm right.
Those guys from cool runnings didn't even deal with racism like the movie portrays. They even said the Germans who in the movie were portrayed as the bad guys were one of the first to welcome them to the winter Olympic games. The movie is funny but its very loosely based.
Umm ufc fighters get paid a good amount. It’s not like they are underpaid. Some of them are even very rich and most of it actually comes from the ufc fights themselves and not just sponsors. Good example is Conor Mcgregor and Khabib. While Olympic athletes just straight up don’t get paid jack shit.
@@MichiDelNoche you do realise there are wayy more fighters, that aren't big draws like that. Because they don't get their full value back they stuggle to get by
Didn't he really? Michael is one of a kind beast. Like, you can argue there's one "Phelps" (maybe two) per discipline, but it doesn't change things that drastically.
@@igorchistyakov8876 there's like 4 or 5 "Phelps" in Australian swimming, going all the way back to Shane Gould, Kieren Perkins, and now Ian Thorpe. None of the top swimmers in Australia ever have to work for money again, with ally he sponsorship and advertising money they get.
@@demun6065 but those are all champions. What about athletes who didn't make it there? I don't know. It's a job that takes a toll on your health, and at some point it all boils down to genetics, not your working ethics, so there's that. And since you have to prepare for modern Olympics since your early childhood, it's kind of a gambling with your own life. One that you are not fully choosing yourself. So the point of the clip kind of endures. Sorry for not replying so long.
@@marcusroy8185 start your own company then and in response to the original statement the olympics is a non profit organisation so bones making “ungodly amounts of money”
I was a national level athlete training for the Olympics & all that I was offered for training 6 days a week was $365 per month. I was told to go and work bingos and try to raise corporate sponsors. All cost for travel, food & training supplies was left up to me. In hindsight getting injured was not as bad as it originally seemed because I was able to start my career.
Trabant but they could use some fuccking money though..why should the companies keep it all anyways? All the years of hard work, sweat and blood, all the dedication..all this investment..you have to eat..you wake up to see you're 30, you have a couple of medals and no other skills or diplomas that can help you earn a living after finishing a career like this..and no money in the bank..what do you do? This is the case with many gymnasts in eastern europe
In London there's abandoned apartments which would of held up to 70 families and theirs numerous of them that were built for the Olympics but no longer used
From the time I was in my teens or 20's, I became more aware of the "glitz and glamor" side of the Olympics, or the commercialism of it, the logos, company brands, etc. The colors thing-the national flags, olympic outfits for each nation, logos on cups and shirts for folks in the crowd, etc., I suppose that has always been fun in some way, but yeah, the company brands thing, its just gotten bigger and bigger and BIGGER with each olympic games... And watching the olympics from home, thats a great deal of what you're seeing anyway, whether its VISA, Coke, Samsung, Procter & Gamble, Toyota, General Electric, McDonald's, Panasonic, Omega, Acer, Atos, Intel, Alibaba, Bridgestone, whatever. You see a LOT of commercials. And I do mean, A. LOT... So I watch the opening ceremonies intermittently, watch some of the events, yanno, DVR's and all that. Honestly, its just not THAT big of a deal. Why sit through hours and hours of commercials, esp. WHEN THEY KEEP REPEATING THE SAME COMMERCIALS OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN?!?!? 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I hope joe rogan knows this is not the case for all athletes. Here in SKorea you get shitloads of medal prize money around $100k along with continued lifetime monthly income. In places like singapore you can get $700k for the gold medal. Asian countries tend to provide higher rewards than the west. The UK doesnt even pay its athletes jack for any medal which blows my mind. The US athletes get max $15k for the gold medal.
IN ANCIENT GREECE WHEN THE OLYMPICS WERE BEING HELD THEY WOULD STOP ALL FIGHTING/WAR BETWEEN THE GREEK CITY STATES AND COMPETE....WHAT WE DID TO RUSSIA IS DISGUSTING, SO WHAT IF THEIR CHEATING THATS WHY WE HAVE TESTING BUT THIS IS ABOUT POWER AND POLITICS!
The lower level guys don't make much when you consider what their expenses have been to get to that point. Keep in mind that the UFC relies on the lower-level competitions to find good fighters, and a lot of fighters are getting paid shit in the lower level shows.
Can confirm. My ex raced the 4x100 in the 2016 olympics and never got a dime from the olympics. She got a cool phone headphones and sun glasses but that’s about it. But even if you factor the cost of that for every athlete, it’s still less than pennies compared to what the olympics make every 4 years.
I mean wrestling pulls in a much lower viewership than sports like UFC or the olympics though, but I dont doubt that theyre still vastly underpaid for the viewership the wrestlers do bring to the table. Professional sport as a whole is just a scheme for rich ass holes to get richer really
I like how he was like, “oh, that’s Shaun king... find me another one”. Glad he knows what an unreliable news outlet looks like. lol. I’m tired of people reposting Shaun’s stuff on social media all the time when he’s unreliable and terribly biased.
One big Olympic star that they forgot about is Katie Taylor , now granted I understand she’s Irish and not American but still the Olympics was the stage she needed to go pro and since then she’s won multiple world box titles. My point being, while yes I agree the Olympics not paying the athletes is almost criminal and so disrespectful to those athletes, it can also be the stage they need to showcase there abilities before making the jump to being a professional sports person. There are upsides and downsides to the Olympic Games and there are many ways to look at it. Go team Katie btw 🇮🇪🥊
I worked in a long term care facility and we had a patient who won silver in swimming and nobody had any clue until they brought it up. These athletes really are disenfranchised
What about your boss Dana White not paying regular fighters very well ? Dana's pockets are full he could pay the UFC fighters like Basketball players get paid !
Mo Lester The fighting industry works by screwing over your athletes with bad Reebok endorsement deals, unfair and subjective shady fight bonuses, biased preferential treatment based on the mood of your boss, suspect corrupt drug testing practices, and pretending the fighters are independent contractors even though they are really treated as employees (with no rights and benefits, no retirement fund) in order to fuck them over. Please enlighten us some more with your utter ignorance, sir.
Mo Lester I watch the UFC for the fights . I watch the fighters . So how the fuck is Dana White, a former aerobics instructor , worth $500 MILLION ??? Explain this to us who “don’t know the fight business lol 😂 I don’t watch UFC because of Dana White . So explain to me how Dana White has made $500 MILLION via UFC , but amazingly entertaining fighter MATT BROWN has only made a little over $1 million total over the last decade of fighting ? There is nothing fair here , buddy . Stop acting like it’s supposed to make sense .
Mo Lester HA ! Matt Brown has fought on SEVEN ppv main cards . Sage Northcut has not fought on a single PPV main card . Paige VanZant has fought only once in a PPV main card . Yet Paige and Sage make more in one fight than Matt Brown has in 10 years . Please don’t try and convince me that anyone actually pays to see Page and Sage ....please don’t feed me that horseshit , ok ? Fight business is like any other business ... a whole lot of politics , favouritism, luck and “who- you- know “, ok ? FOOL !
so like, in most fields in college like say a lab assistant or a research analyst they pay you. I don't think college athletes should be different, but also like they probably don't need to be paid super well. Many are there on full ride scholarships in the first place so that's already more than most people make in college. They could be compensated for their time though as it hinders them from having a job to have to practice so much.
