Joe is 17 and has had behavioural and mental health issues from a young age.
In 2015, Joe’s behaviour and mental illness reached a crisis point which culminated in his mother, Hannah, calling the police. Fortunately, instead of being taken to a police cell, Joe was taken to the newly opened Place of Safety at Plym Bridge House in Plymouth.
The unit provides acute, short-term assessments and treatment to young people who present with any mental health disorder of such as high intensity and risk that their needs cannot be met within their community.
Joe received counselling and support from the experienced and appropriately trained multi-disciplinary staff team and was able to return home with a care plan in place.
Since returning home Joe has turned his life around to the benefit of both himself and his family. Joe’s story highlights the importance of providing the right level of care to individuals at the right place and at the right time.
