During Ice 9 at his concert on April 13 in Enschede, Joe Satriani broke his cable (2:45). What happened was astonishing! #joesatriani #ibanez #enschede
For those who commented on the keyboard player - he is Rai Thistlethwayte from Australia - his band here is Thirsty Merc, he plays with Oz Noy in Ozone Squeeze and has clips under the name Sun Rai - all well worth a listen. And his comment about playing in Joe's band is how great it is to work with nice people - says a lot .
@@Saiyan585 I don’t know how reliable those are these days. Just been listening to an old EVH interview where he talked about the probs with the early ones….and of course Nigel Tufnell’s problems on Spinal Tap…lol
My brother. You're Crazy! What a great sound. How peaceful the band was in holding the music's footprint. Joe's confidence in interacting with the band's improvisation, confidence in his technical team.
Damn, that was killer!! Joe liked the break down so much he just went with it and the guitar vs. keyboard part of the show was born!! Joe in his 60's is still an absolute shred king. The most tasteful and soulful shredder ever.
Yea, and it was cool that Joe saw that the jamming was entertaining the crowd. So, even after he got the issue fixed, he didn’t immediately have them move back to Plan A. They stuck with the jam for a bit first. It was awesome!
@@LorenScott69 Absolutely it really show's how much feeling he has and how much he respects his band. I've watched maybe a hundred different versions of ice nine and i've studied the song and some of the licks he plays one this one are reaaaaly inspired and cool, so sometimes the unexpected can bring cool best. I go see him in nantes on may 4th can't wait 🙂
What's the way you have to use the moment… Completely unexpected interruption, total state change., completely unexpected new interaction for the audience to enjoy.
@@Saiyan585 playing wireless can have an effect on the signal, so it's a big no no for joe i think. I read an article recently where he explains he tries to have the shortest cable possible while playing live be cause he can feel the difference when playing with longer cables. i found it pretty wild^^
Joe was so cool about it. Not all musicians are. Back in the 1980s I went to a Todd Rundgrend solo concert here in the St Louis area. He starts to play a ovation 12 string for his opening song, stops, pulls it off and slams it up against the wall. Storms around for a minute on stage then says, " I pay good money to have my shit in tune"
Ray Thistletwaite is a phenom keyboard player who i found out about through following Louis Cole. Ray toured with Louis for a good while abroad in Europe etc....I know he was the keyboardist when Knower played live at Stuttgart...which is on youtube...it'll blow your mind
WOW!! That was as smooth as it gets for the whole band. Love it!! Also, notice just after 6:46, when the band was at a spot where they could elegantly switch from "emergency jam" mode back into Ice-9, they hardly made any noticeable cue. Just Kenny (drums) started with the accented crashes, and there they were. Not sure if anyone was talking to them all via their in-ear monitors to make that happen so smoothly or what, but... that's as professional as it gets!
In my humble humble opinion i think i saw joe jut giving a look to kenny that meant " let's go back to the song" and it was enough, these guys know each other really well. I could be wrong though i dont think joe plays with an ear monitor ;)
@@valentinloew I watched again closely and don’t see Joe giving Kenny (or anyone) any visual cues. Perhaps it’s in the riff that Joe does near the end of that previous measure that the band just gets as a signal. ???
@@LorenScott69 I did too and i think i saw hi: turn but once again. but yes you're correct, the last couple of bars of the jam lead to a resolution, for kenny and the other guys, it's enough of a cue in itself
If you watch other versions of Ice9 from this same tour you’ll notice that when this extended breakdown solo section goes from trading 2 bars of gtr / 2 bars of keys to all-Joe with no more trading (here @6:36) that’s the signal that we’re in the final 8 bars and the hits are coming. Great musicians. Super tight and an amazing performance.
@@DomingoVoiceOver Ahhhh!!! Thanks for that. I wasn’t aware that the planned live version did include the extended solo section. So, once Joe was connected again, I presume their normal amount of back and forth just happened as usual. (Correct?) In any case… this is what it looks like when seasoned professional are on stage!! :)
Joe now realises he has a keyboard player - and more importantly - a stunning virtuoso............who NEEDS TO BE HEARD MORE !!! ...and a phenomenal Bass player too !!! ...and a phenomenal Drummer too !!! ...all in all, a thoroughly competent band, if I say so myself.
I sometimes find it amazing how delicate the links that hold the chain of a (rock) concert together. Strings worth $1 a piece, 9v batteries in the pedals, cables that require only a couple pounds of pressure to release... etc. what could possibly go wrong!
I was being Captain Skept-ismo thinking this is going to be a half ass distaster.... OH NO! WOW this is what live music is all about. When you can feel the energy from a monitor watching youtube and get chills thats the magic we all look for as musicians....Glad its caught on video...Thanks MACFARLAKE
That took an awful long time. one time we were playing @ The Newport, (the former Agora in Columbus Ohio) and one of our roadies walked behind the backdrop where he was told not to cause it's dark!! And during the show he kicks apart the main feed wires and the whole stage goes silent! Thank god the other roadie who was smart not to walk back there jumped into action and had it fixed within 8 seconds
3:05 Hats off to Grandmaster Satches new keyboardist!! Shiiiiieeeeeettttt never in my life did I ever think I would hear a jazz funk version of Ice9 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The beauty of live shows, you never know what might happen. Personally, I think I'd use wireless connections to avoid all of the cables, but there's probably good reasons not to.
Wasn't really paying attention to the vid and thought to myself: That key playing seems so familar.... sounds like Rai T... ;) Didnt even know he was touring with Satch atm. Another reason to go see him live.
This can happen when you are using backing tracks as well. Backing tracks are enhancement. They are not there for you to fake your parts. That would be playback
Pros. Outstanding. Just as one would have top level performers and crew take care of business. JS is too cool with incredible players. Thx for sharing. 👣🎵🌟
