Joe Savage recalls breaking out of the Rosedale jail, his time spent at Parchman Farm (the Mississippi State Penitentiary) at Lambert Camp and Camp 1, and his work with a contrary white mule. He sings several field holler verses. Shot by Alan Lomax, John Bishop, and Worth Long on the levee in Greenville, Mississippi, August 22, 1978. In the 1940s they still had the prisoners plow with a mule, with no way to control where it went? It sounds more like a mind fcuk than a way to get the ground plowed. Anyway, I've heart a lot of songs about Parchman's farm, but this is the first description of daily life I've found.

Opinunate ted yeah just slavery reincarnated,sorta like today except just not quite as inhumane

Opinunate ted No way to control where the mule went? How did you think they plowed before the advent of machinery?
@milascave2
@milascave2 4 года назад
@@mojorisin5775 They would train the mule, and they would hit it when it went astray. Not so hard as to injure it, just enough to let it know who was in charge. Well, it sounds like in Parchman, they could whip the prisoners to control them, but the prisoners could not discipline the mules to control them. And the fact that the prisoners were black and the mule was white, well, they were trying to teach them something, but it probably was not how to plow a field.
