How did I not know Tymon Dogg was in the Mescaleros. He taught Joe how to be a guitar strummer long ago in a Shepherd's Bush squat. Contributed some songs on !Sandinista!. I wish Coma Girl was on this. It's a song I strum and sing as best I can and I'm always looking for a version of it. It's how I found this great concert footage. Thanks for the post. Seriously. I'd just moved to NZ a month before this concert and about the time it was played I was discovering Mt Ruapehu with one of my close friends, Michael, a snowboarding career mentor of mine from my home in New Mexico who was working a season here. The lyric in Bhindi Bhagee about "just flew into New Zealand in search of mushy peas" was not lost to us then. Puts a smile on my face when I hear it. I still live here, the peas are still awful. My first Christmas Day here I learned Joe had died. Recently my friend Michael also died. Cancer. A few days before his bestie George, also a mentor of mine, died in a tragic trucking accident. Both, like Joe, were trailblazers, total legends and amazing people. R.I.P all of them. But none of us get out alive and meanwhile the "Future is Unwritten". We can but be grateful for those who are gone, for the times we had and the strength that their wisdom and truth gave us. And try to do the same for the ones we will leave behind. Last bit: Oh how I love to see Joe's 1966 Telecaster. It was pretty much his only electric guitar. Never stolen or missing and still in pretty stock condition less the compensated saddles and additions/subtractions of paint over the years. It was sold to him by Palmolive (soon to be the OG drummer of the all-godess pioneering punk band The Slits) while he was fronting the great proto-punk band the 101ers. So he had that gat since 1975, when punk hadn't begun and I was three years-old. I'd trade all but my best guitar just to have a strum on Strummer's '66 Tele. Like Joe, we only really need one guitar anyway. But don't tell my wife I wrote that. Won't matter, nobody reads long posts. HA! Peace out if you did read this one.

Saw the Slits open for the Clash at Bonds in '81. I had a feeling there was a true connection to those bands and now I know. Thank you.

The man passed way to early, I've been into the CLASH since their beginning and was lucky enough to see them play live back in 1981.

Only saw Joe with the Mescaleros once supporting The Who. Always regret not going watching them on tour, kept meaning to and stupidly put it off thinking I’d catch them next time and then it was too late 😢😔 I met Tymon Dogg a few years ago playing with one of his bands in one of my local pubs. Me and my mate had a chat with after the gig. A really nice bloke.

Not one of his best performances but I'd really have Strummer on a slightly off day than most rockers on a good day. I miss the man terribly. A personal hero.

Joe wore his heart on his sleeve. You don't need to agree with everything he says/sings to appreciate his personal integrity. Oh, how we could do with someone with just half of his magic in these troublesome times.

This show was first and last time I met Joe, backstage. My brother and I bought VIP passes and waited for him after the show. We were the last ones in line and he had us all sit down on the grass right there and chat. He said him and half the band were sick. All I had for him to sign was a flyer from some Clash tribute band in AZ, and he asked if he could have it! He said he could sign my ticket stub though, and that was good enough for me. I think you can see my brother in the front row at the end of the video, dark hair guy turning to talk to someone. Might not be him but it sure looks like it.

I think Mario was Macedonian. I regret not being strong enough, rich enough, aware enough to impress you like you impress me. I've seen a few images of Joe with full on grey hair so he must have dyed it whereas mine's natural and I have all my teeth. I have to compete so I don't suffer so much with the loss.
