@@oldermusiclover not sure who else was in the band...though this was intended to be his last tour....he was going to retire from travelling, and do studio work....but, the late Billy Stewart called him to come back on the road....on the morning of January 17, 1970, the car carrying Billy Stewart, Rico Hightower, William Cathy, and My father Norman P. Rich, tirod failed, they drifted left into a grassy median, and into the Neuss river...All perished!!!!
Hello my Uncle Norman is in this video with Joe Tex. He is to the right of Joe Tex playing the sax. My uncle's name was Norman Rich. He along with the late Billy Stewart, William Cathy and Rico Hightower were killed in a car crash on January 17, 1970 I just simply love this. It brought tears to my eyes. Everybody knows who The King of Soul James Brown is; but everybody forgets about Joe Tex. Joe could do it all, sing & he could dance almost as good as The Godfather himself. . Joe was really good at singing ballads. Joe was one BAD man
What a stellar performance from Joe and his band! He always had a great time onstage, a true natural showman. He brought a bit of comedy to his music. You are sorely missed, Mr. Tex!
Other than the performance, of course, is how good the sound is. Most TV stations, at home or abroad, particularly at this time, often didn't understand the soul music (or jazz) sound aesthetic. The rhythm section is all in your face in this video. It's GREAT!
Joe Tex is perhaps one of the most underrated recording artists. He was a versatile singer and a complete entertainer plus a gentleman. I would say he is right up there with James Brown, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Gene McDaniels.
Always loved JT. I think many got the wrong impression of him on record. A very sincere, hard working artist and performer. Also a wonderful songwriter with a clever sense of humor. May he rest in peace. His time among us ended much too soon.
wow I met this gentleman early 7Os in Chgo, I had just begun my career and he was killing everybody that was on a show with him! What an awesome talent.
Don't get me wrong, I love James Brown, But Joe Tex ain't no slouch either. James would do mic tricks on an aggressive level. But Joe does mic tricks sooooooooooooooooo smooth. I like that!!
Don't you love that sax line? Most people don't know that early days of rock did not feature guitar bands. The saxophone was primary instrument. They still sound great! I know that 2nd song very well. Green Green Grass of Home is primarily a country song. Porter Waggoner had the big hit on it, but Tom Jones did too, Elvis used to perform it i concert and included it on an album too. Joe said it was written by Curly Putnam, but it was Curly Putman. It's a great song.
The man who got all his moves stolen by the more famous guy. Also good to see the old "tv två" logo in the corner. Swedish television knew how to mic up a rythm section back then even if it borderline clips here and there its preferable to todays aweful compression. Anyways awesome concert! Peace
I don't think so, not that I know of anyhow. It's from a VHS-recording I made of the show when swedish TV broadcasted it after they've discovered it in their vaults some years ago.
@gezaxx - While Joe Tex was a great performer, James Brown did NOT steal his sound! James Brown is now credited with creating funk, 'beginning with 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag' in 1965. It was on the '1 and 3', not '2 and 4' beat. Joe Tex's songs after this started to copy James Brown's funk.
@@drapetomania2156 I doubt James Brown stole dance moves from Joe Tex. Joe Tex was talking more about the microphone tricks, but even that there’s no proof that either one stole from the other. If you go back to the 1940s, a lot of the black groups that dance they kind of dance like James Brown does he changed it with a little variation and so did Joe Tex.
@@PaulDA2000 I saw a short video clip of JT vs. JB, both were doing the same dance moves. I was shocked to see someone doing the same moves of JB. Ok, maybe not stealing due to those moves were being done in the black community. Do you know who was doing those moves first in their act-JB or JT?

There is a belief that James Brown stole his showmanship from Joe Tex, especially the tricks with the microphone. Although they were on the same record label. They could not stand each other.
